NEWS Being there BY MEAGAN KATT SHEA a.k.a. Geranium Mayburger There are three schools on Angel Square The rehearsals were heavy, the performances were long, but it was all worthwhile. We rehearsed for six weeks at the N.A.C. Atelier before we moved to the National Arts Centre. We rehearsed there for five weeks and then presented three student matinees. We did twentythree performances for the public from December 17 to January 2. There were twenty-two junior cast members and eight adult actors. Josh Lovejoy held down the part of the lead with Richard Latour as his understudy. Angel Square Three kids from the Glebe area took part in the play; Mark Brown, 13, from Glashan, played Manfred Mahoney, a tough guy; Jonquil Garrick, 14, from Canterbury High School, played Fleurette Featherstone Fitchell, the local tart; and Meagan Shea, 12, from Hopewell School, played a tomboy, Geranium Mayburger a real dummy. We all enjoyed ourselves most of the time, but it was tiring near the end although we were all sad to part. The friendships we made will last us a lifetime and it was a very exciting four months together. Meagan Shea is a Grade eight student at Hopewell. L. to R. In June the director held auditions for kids who would be in grade seven or eight in the 87-88 school year. Students who did well went on to more auditions and finally the cast and understudies were chosen. Angel Square is based on the book written by Brian Doyle, an Ottawa author and Head of the English Department at Glebe Collegiate. It is about a boy named Tommy who lives in Lowertown in the mid-1940's. Sammy's father is assaulted by someone who doesn't like Jews. Tommy is nicknamed Lamonte after Lamonte Cranston of The Shadow, Tommy's favourite radio program. Like his hero, the Shadow, Tommy decides to find out who assaulted Mr. Rosenberg. Meanwhile, Sammy and his parents have gone to Toronto to get better care for Mr. Rosenberg, and Tommy has to cross Angel Square alone. Angel Square is the site of many fights, as the kids from three different schools and four different religions .1111.1111.- rflry,,.% 4b have to cross it four times a day. Amidst this chaos, Tommy is trying to get the lovely Margot Lane to notice him. In the end, Tommy solves the crime, manages to get Christmas presents for his friends and family and discovers that Margot Lane 1. N. I likes him too. I thought everyone did a great job. The sets were extremely realistic and the costumes were great too but the people were the best. All in all it was amazing! Kari Wolanski is a Grade seven student at HopeweZZ. GCA New Year brings new problems for the Glebe By G.C.A. President Brian Jonah Happy New Year to all. I hope you all survived the festive season in good health. I did but just barely. The sumptuous food and good cheer start to take its toll after a while. As you may know, Bread and Fruit has decided to give up the postal service franchise as soon as another operator can be found in the Glebe. If another business is not willing to take on the franchise, then it appears that residents in the Glebe will again have to make the trek over to Main St. in order to pick up registered mail and parcels that could not be delivered. Normally, the GCA does not get involved in federal issues of this nature. However, given the complete failure by Canada Post to provide adequate service in the Glebe, it is time for the GCA to become more actively involved. At the last Board meeting in November, postal service was briefly discussed. At that time, however, Bread and Fruit had just agreed to take on the franchise, so it was felt that the issue was resolved. Given the current turn of events, this issue will be discussed again at the next GCA Board meeting on January 26 with a view toward a more permanent solution. If you have any thoughts on what plan of action the GCA should adopt, give me a call at 236-2299. GCA opposed to new revisions At an earlier meeting of the Task Force, the general consensus was that the Task Force would be presenting options on the maximum number of residents and the separation distance in its report so that the Ottawa Planning Committee at City Hall would have a range of proposals from which to choose. However this earlier decision was revoked at the December meeting and the above single set of recommendations was agreed upon, although not by all the community representatives who were outnumbered by the representatives of the caregivers. Given the Task Force's back-tracking on the options approach and the disparity between the GCA's position on separation distance and that of the Task Force, our representative on the Task Force, Frank Porporino, felt that nothing more could be accomplished through working on the Task Force and hence resigned from it. I fully support his decision. This decision was not taken lightly since the GCA representative has invested considerable time in the Task Force.
