Mitchell The BMW Car Club of America formed a non-profit, tax-exempt charitable foundation in order to provide benefits to the motoring-public community and to owners of BMW automobiles. The mission of the Foundation is to establish a repository of historical information and artifacts related to BMW, and to foster educational programs for the general automotive community. To that end, the Foundation has established three programs to accomplish its mission: The Street Survival Teen Program Street Survival conducts educational projects to improve the car handling skills of young drivers—especially teenagers—in the hope of reducing accidents, injuries, and deaths. Formed in April 2002 by the BMW CCA Foundation, the Street Survival safe teen driving program was launched with the help of several corporate sponsors: BMW of North America, ZF Corporation of North America, The Tire Rack, and Liberty Mutual Insurance. Street Survival is built upon the premise that safe driving is learned by doing. From the outset, Street Survival has always been “hands on” and designed to go beyond the typical high-school driver’s education program. The program teaches students to avoid accidents by thinking and looking ahead. Street Survival is unique in that it offers students instruction in their own cars so that they learn the limitations of their daily-driver cars. The year 2003 was the pilot year for Street Survival; several successful schools were held around the country by various BMW CCA chapters. The successive years have shown continued growth: 2004 had more than a dozen schools providing instruction for several hundred students, and 2005 had eighteen successful schools across the country. Our goal for 2006 is for 40 schools. Another successful Street Survival School was held at the 2006 BMW CCA Oktoberfest in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Most of us are aware of the carnage that occurs on American highways, and good driver education will help reduce accidents. With your support and help, the goal of the BMW CCA Foundation Street Survival program will help make our teenagers safer drivers. The Preservation and Restoration Program The Preservation and Restoration Program fosters and promotes the art of vehicle preservation and restoration through educational programs and activities. The Preservation and Restoration Program has been involved with vintage events over the past several years. We have supported the BMW Vintage and Classic Car Club of America’s events for two years. Last year, the cars ran a tour into the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Two years ago, they held a wonderful international marathon starting at Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey—home of BMW NA—motored north to Maine, then traversed the eastern seaboard, winding their way south to Greer, South Carolina—home of the BMW Manufacturing Plant. We have also been involved with BMW’s Rolex Vintage Festival at Lime Rock, Connecticut by sponsoring the concours for the past three years. We award a special trophy to the “Most Desirable BMW” at this event. The Library, Archives, and Museum Program The Library, Archives, and Museum Program creates a repository for BMW-related historical documents, literature, and paraphernalia providing club members with access to rare and interesting BMW artifacts, while insuring their continued existence. The library and archives are a home to a BMW-related historical literature, documents, and paraphernalia. The archive was started in 2003 with donations from the BMW CCA library, BMW NA, and several collectors. Some of our larger donations have come from Bob Murphy’s and Leif Anderberg’s personal collections, as well as from Michel Potheau’s estate. We have also had several smaller collections and donations from many other BMW CCA members. The Foundation is dedicated to the preservation of classic BMWs like the cars that ran in the 2004 BMW Vintage Marathon—from pre-war 326s to post-war Veritas-bodied 328s. What exactly are we collecting? Just about anything BMW car or motorcycle-related. The collection includes videos/DVDs, brochures, books, tech/parts/wiring diagram manuals, press kits, magazines, model cars, Club related materials, and more. Eventually, our inventory will be cataloged and listed on our website for everyone to view. To this date, we’ve cataloged about 2,500 items, and I’d say we have about 10,000 items stored in our archives. (As we find duplicates, these items will be put up for sale either on the web or on eBay.) The aim of this archiving is to be able to provide various research services. Although we are off to a great start building our archives, we continue to need your help. We appreciate the donations everyone has sent so far to help us get to this point. There is still a lot of material out there that we can use. So if you are thinking about cleaning out your garage, basement, aic, or that special room you have for your automotive and motorcycle materials, let’s talk. BMW CCA Foundation - continued Remember, we are a non-profit, tax-exempt charitable foundation. Why not donate to the Foundation and get a tax write-off, rather than throwing things away? As a matter a fact, even if it isn’t BMW-related, maybe we could use it to raise money for things the Foundation needs. (Please, no Roundel magazine collections; we have plenty of extra issues.) For your donation, we will send a leer acknowledging and thanking you for your contribution. The Foundation also takes cash donations anytime. If you prefer to earmark it to a specific area in the Foundation, please let us know. Michael Mitchell is the office manager and curator for the BMW CCA Foundation. Some of you may know him from the BMW CCA National Office. In January of 2006 he moved over to working full-time at the Foundation to run the library and archives, and to work with the Street Survival program. Web/Technology Status Shared-Board files request: Dadgar will talk to Ghidinelli and will change the Board email from aliases to a mailing-list for archiving. We have problems with members who join for specific events not geing membership until aer the event, because we can’t refund the membership fee if they cancel. Vice President Truck(s) Report(s) New truck financing status: see Treasurer’s report. Old truck sale: Hull has received no payments and no labor has been done. The truck is still in our storage area (still insured and still registered by GGC). Bensen will talk to the buyer. Volunteer Incentive Program Bensen still working on values for volunteer tasks. President 2007 elections: candidates have to get their statements to Seeley by September 1. Merchandise Status Cowan modeled a lovely outfit which included a GGC cap and ringer t-shirt, plus coordinated shorts. For some reason, he came in through the dealership’s back door. We have received a total commission of $30 since starting the Café Press operation. Mills received his first complaint leer about the merchandise quality. The GoGoGear discussions were reopened. We have a webpage on the GoGoGear site; items include hats, silkscreened and embroidered polos, tees, tanks, sweatshirts, mousepad, coaster, mug, wall clock, license plate frame, travel mug. GoGoGear will hold inventory rather than do instant production, and GoGoGear will take the inventory risk. Mills has asked for a formal agreement. Virtual Chapters Mills asked our regional VP how to start a virtual chapter. His answer: the same as the current process.
