2008 Notebook RETURNING FOR 2008 Under the direction of second-year head coach John Danowski, the Blue Devils return 32 lettermen and eight starters from last year’s club that went 17-3, won both the ACC regular season and tournament titles and played in the national championship game ... Among the returnees are three 2007 USILA First Team All-America selections in attackmen Matt Danowski and Zack Greer and longstick midfielder Nick O’Hara. LETTERMEN LOST Defenseman Casey Carroll — a first team All- America choice in 2007 — headlines the list of eight lettermen lost from a season ago ... Carroll, who also earned All-America recognition in 2005, was credited for 68 ground balls last spring as Duke lead the ACC in scoring defense ... Also departed from last year’s 17-3 squad are co-captain Ed Douglas, starting midfielder Peter Lamade, reserve midfielder Fred Krom and face-off specialist Dan Oppedisano. Senior midfielder Michael Ward received second team accolades while senior goalkeeper Dan Loftus was named to the third team ... Midfielders Brad Ross and Ned Crotty were honorable mention honorees. FIVE FOR FIVE Five of Duke’s players — Matt Danowski, Dan Loftus, Tony McDevitt, Nick O’Hara and Michael Ward — have returned following graduation to play a fifth season of eligibility ... The extra season was granted by the NCAA stemming from the cancelled 2006 campaign ... All five graduated from Duke last May, with Danowski, Loftus, O’Hara and Ward pursuing master’s degrees in liberal studies while McDevitt is enrolled in Duke’s Fuqua School of Business. ACTIVE LEADERS Duke’s Matt Danowski is the active NCAA leader in both assists and total points while teammate Zack Greer paces current players in goals scored ... Danowski has 256 points on 129 goals and 127 assists while Greer has scored 141 goals ... In addition, Danowski’s streak of recording at least one point in 42 consecutive games also stands as the nation’s longest among active players heading into the 2008 season. Last year he joined former Virginia standout Doug Knight as the only two players in ACC history to register two seasons with 50 or more goals ... Greer’s 2005 total is an NCAA record for freshmen ... With 141 career goals, the Whitby, Ontario, Canada native ranks fourth on Duke’s all-time list. Danowski begins the 2008 season ranking sixth in assists, tied for 13th in goals and second in total points ... He is 24 points shy of the league’s all-time scoring leader — Stan Cockerton of N.C. State who amassed 280 points from 1977-80 ... Greer is ninth on the league’s goals chart and is 52 behind Cockerton, who owns the conference standard with 193. The Blue Devils return five players — Danowski (44), Greer (67), Ned Crotty (25), Max Quinzani (24) and Brad Ross (22) — that scored at least 20 goals a year ago ... Last season’s Duke club led the ACC and ranked third in the nation in scoring offense by averaging 12.65 goals per game. EXPERIENCED DEFENSIVE UNIT The Blue Devil defensive unit brings back a wealth of experience with the return of starting goalkeeper Dan Loftus and All-America selections Tony McDevitt and Nick O’Hara ... In addition, starting defenseman Ryan McFadyen also returns, as does preseason All-America defensive midfielder Michael Ward ... Last year, Duke paced the ACC and ranked eighth nationally in scoring defense by allowing 7.65 goals per game. DUKE IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT In 2008, Duke will look to make its 12th appearance in the NCAA Tournament ... The Blue Devils hold an all-time record of 12-11 in postseason play ... The Blue Devils have reached the national semifinals three times in 1997, 2005 and 2007, and advanced to the title game in both 2005 and 2007 ... Last year, Duke earned the top seed in the tournament for the first time in program history, and also earned top-eight seeds in 1994 (8), 1995 (5), 1997 (5), 1998 (7), 1999 (4), 2000 (7), 2002 (7) and 2005 (2). DUKE AT HOME In 2007, the Blue Devils posted an 11-1 record at home and are 26-3 (.890) in Durham over the past three seasons ... Over the past 10 years, Duke has won 84 percent of its home games by compiling a 68- 13 ledger ... Included in that stretch are two undefeated home seasons in 2000 (8-0) and 2005 (10-0). FACING-OFF Duke is scheduled to face-off by committee again in 2008 ... The Blue Devils return four players — Mike Catalino (58), Terrence Molinari (82), Sam Payton (79) and Brad Ross (57) — who took at least 50 draws during the 2007 campaign ... Molinari led Duke with his .537 winning percentage, winning 44-of-82 attempts ... In addition, Rob Wellington joins the mix after missing the entire 2007 season while recovering from knee surgery. AGAINST RANKED OPPONENTS Over the past three seasons, Duke has amassed a 22-8 (.733) record versus ranked opponents ... In 2007, the Blue Devils won a nations-best nine games against teams ranked in the top 10. ACC TOURNAMENT The 2008 ACC Tournament will be held April 25 and 27 in Charlottesville, Va. ... Duke captured the 2007 ACC crown in Durham with victories over North Carolina and Virginia ... The ACC Tournament has been held in Charlottesville five previous years (1994, 1996, 1997, 1998 & 2003) and Duke owns a combined record of 2-5 in those tournaments, reaching the finals twice in 1997 and 2003 before losing to the host Cavaliers on both occasions.
