Colin Brown
President and CEO
JM Family Enterprises, Inc.
“Founded by automotive legend Jim Moran,
JM Family Enterprises has been proud to be a
part of Greater Fort Lauderdale since 1968. For
more than 40 years, we have developed deep and
meaningful roots within Broward County and
our achievements as a diversified automotive
corporation are the result of the many hardworking
associates who call South Florida
home. Along with over 150 other companies
headquartered in the area, we believe Greater Fort
Lauderdale provides an exceptional environment
for business success and community engagement.”
Why Greater
Fort Lauderdale
With a large skilled workforce, appealing tax climate, dynamic
international connections and exceptional quality of life, Greater Fort
Lauderdale is one of the world’s most attractive business locations.
AutoNation Headquarters in Fort Lauderdale
Why GREATER FORT LAUDERDALE
Many Fortune 500 companies have chosen
Broward for their corporate and regional
headquarters, while innovative start-ups,
manufacturers, technology companies,
distributors, and global service companies
find that Greater Fort Lauderdale offers the
right combination of assets for sustainable
business success.
Cbeyond, Embraer, Foxconn, General
Dynamics C4 Systems, Marriott International,
and Research in Motion are just a few of the
companies that have expanded their Broward
operations or chosen the Greater Fort
Lauderdale area for new facilities.
One of the key reasons is that Broward has
a large, well-educated workforce with a high
level of technology skills, as well as creative
professionals in touch with today’s market
trends. Another appeal is the county’s businessfriendly,
low-tax environment that includes
financial incentives for qualifying businesses.
Greater Fort Lauderdale offers a high quality
of life, including a wide array of housing
choices, excellent schools, and year-round
golf, boating and other outdoor activities.
It’s a great place to build a company, raise a
family and enjoy all the good things in life.
An Ideal Location
for Corporate Headquarters
AutoNation, the largest U.S. automotive
retailer, is among the 150 public and private
companies with corporate headquarters in
Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County.
“AutoNation is proud to have been a Fort
Lauderdale-based company from Day One,”
said Mike Jackson, chairman and CEO.
“This community has supported us with
its outstanding talent, its business-friendly
policies and its welcoming spirit. That special
combination of factors is a leading reason
why we’ve been able to grow as quickly and
as successfully as we have.”
Here are some of the key reasons major
companies are choosing Greater Fort
Lauderdale/Broward County for their
corporate or regional headquarters:
• A central location of the South Florida
metropolitan statistical area (MSA), the
largest in the Southeast with a population of
more than 5.4 million
• A broad based and diverse multilingual
workforce continuously enhanced through
education of 350,000 college students each year
• Access to both domestic and international
markets with three airports in close
proximity, including convenient service to
Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe
• State-of-the-art telecommunications
infrastructure, including international cable
landings and Tier-1 Network Access Points
High National Rankings
Greater Fort Lauderdale continues to be one of the most attractive business locations
in the country, as evidenced by the following recent national rankings.
• Florida ranked 5th in the nation for business-friendly tax climate, according to the Tax
Foundation’s 2010 State Business Tax Climate Index. The index ranks states based on the taxes that
matter most to businesses and business investment: corporate income, individual income, sales,
property and unemployment insurance taxes. Florida received an overall No. 5 ranking, which it has
held since 2006. Also, Florida is among seven states that levy no individual income tax.
• The Miami-Fort Lauderdale metropolitan area was the third least-costly place to do business
among 22 U.S. cities or metropolitan areas with populations exceeding 2 million, according to
a recent study by KPMG LLP. Compared with a U.S. index rating of 100, Miami-Fort Lauderdale
has a cost of 93.8 for corporate and IT services, 92.2 for research and development and 97.8 for
manufacturing. The region benefits from low labor and transportation costs, the study said.
• Miami-Fort Lauderdale was ranked 7th among the “Nation’s Best Places to Start a Small
Business” (Bizjournals, 2010).
• Greater Fort Lauderdale’s JM Family Enterprises and Balfour Beatty Construction were named to
Fortune magazine’s 2010 list of “Best Companies to Work for List.”
• Miami-Fort Lauderdale ranks among the nation’s “Top 100 Tech Centers” (Bizjournals, May 2009).
• With 65 percent broadband adoption, 18 broadband providers and 13,403 people per WiFi
hotspot, the Greater Fort Lauderdale-Miami MSA ranks among the most wired broadband areas in
the nation, according to Forbes (March 2010).
• Fort Lauderdale and Coral Springs were named “North American Cities of the Future/Top Cities in
North America” by fDi Magazine, (April/May 2009).
Why GREATER FORT LAUDERDALE
• Highly ranked public and private schools,
colleges and universities
• A plentiful inventory of reasonably priced,
high-quality executive housing
• Five professional sports teams in the
region covering baseball, basketball,
football, hockey and soccer
• Year-round outdoor recreation in a highly
favorable climate
Regional Cooperation
South Florida (Miami-Dade, Broward and
Palm Beach Counties) has been designated
a “megaregion of the future” and a driver
of future U.S. economic growth. In an April
2009 special section, “South Florida: Where
Innovation, Creativity, Education and
Global Access Meet,” Inc. magazine called
the region “one of the most connected
places on earth.”
The Inc. article cited South Florida’s
transportation connections and
deep business and cultural ties to
Latin America, the Caribbean, and
Europe. “Companies that do business
internationally particularly covet the area’s
skilled, multi-cultural workforce,” said the
article. “Altogether, the region’s growing
bioscience cluster, thriving industries,
international population, and popularity
as a destination make it a dense, active
business community.”
Overall, South Florida is the 7th largest
metropolitan statistical area (MSA) in the
nation with 5.4 million residents – roughly
one-third of Florida’s total population.
Approximately 60 percent of the population
is in the prime working ages.
South Florida business and community
leaders work together to take a regional
approach to economic development. For
example, the Greater Fort Lauderdale
Alliance, The Miami-Dade Beacon
Council, and The Business Development
Board of Palm Beach County jointly
developed a regional marketing
campaign called “South Florida: Your
Global Business Connection” where the
South Florida area is marketed through
brochures and DVD’s in multiple
languages (English, French, German,
Italian and Spanish).
Other examples of regional cooperation in
recent years include:
• Presentations at BIO 2006 in Chicago, BIO
2007 in Boston and BIO 2009 in Atlanta.
BIO is the world’s largest biotech conference.
• A regional approach to marketing Super
Bowl XLI, held February 4, 2007 at Dolphin
Stadium in northern Miami-Dade.
• Joint support for Scripps Florida in Palm
Beach County, the Free Trade Area of the
Americas (FTAA) and the Network Access
Companies from around the world are
choosing Greater Fort Lauderdale for their
operations. Here are some recent examples
of companies who have located, relocated or
expanded in the area:
Locations and Relocations
Kaplan University
Kaplan University celebrated the grand
opening of its new location in the City
of Plantation at a recent ribbon-cutting
ceremony. Plantation Mayor Rae Carole
Armstrong welcomed the university,
saying an educated workforce is the key to
economic development and the backbone
of future business development. “Kaplan
provides a different school of thought on
how to deliver educational programs, an
impressive use of technology and a broad
curriculum to meet the diverse needs that
are so critical to our city and the workforce
today,” said Armstrong.
The new site opened in October 2009. It
houses admissions officers and other online
student support staff, as well as a Kaplan
University Learning Center. The center is
designed to provide face-to-face support
services and up to four classroom-based
courses for local online students. The site
already has nearly 500 employees and will
eventually house 700.
“This is our fourth support center in
Broward County, but it’s really a first for our
university,” said Gregory Marino, president
of Kaplan University Group. “This is the
first location that combines the best of
both worlds at Kaplan: a support center to
assist students who attend classes online
from anywhere in the world and a Kaplan
University Learning Center that offers faceto-face
advisor support and some classroom
courses for online students living here in
South Florida. We couldn’t be more excited
about bringing this 21st century learning
model to Broward County.”
Kaplan continues to open new sites to
accommodate its growing student body.
third Fort Lauderdale support center in 2008.
Kaplan opened its first offices in South Florida
in 2000 with 65 employees and today has
nearly 3,000 employees here.
Vutec, a leading international manufacturer
of video projection screens and lighting
industry products, has relocated its
102,195-square-foot facility in Coral Springs
Corporate Park. The new facility will house
the company’s offices and its vertically
integrated manufacturing operations.
Vutec’s complete line of state-of-the-art,
award-winning video projection screens and
accessories will be manufactured there. “We
are pleased to welcome a global technology
leader to Coral Springs and continue the
planned expansion of the Corporate Park,”
said Ralph Merritt, chairman of the Coral
Springs Economic Development Foundation,
and Mayor Scott Brook in a joint statement.
To help facilitate the company’s relocation,
the City Commission approved the issuance
of $4.2 million in Industrial Development
Revenue Bonds (IDBs) to help finance the
cost of the project. IDBs provide a source of
long-term, below-market-rate financing of
capital requirements for new or expanding
manufacturing facilities.
The Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance is
Broward County’s official public/private
partnership for economic development.
Its mission is to lead Broward County
in building a stronger and more diverse
economy by stimulating the creation of new
jobs and capital investment while facilitating
the growth and retention of businesses in
Broward County. Services offered by the
Alliance include assistance with business
relocation or expansion and site selection;
BRAVO
One of the major goals of the Greater Fort
Lauderdale Alliance is to help companies
of all sizes already located in Broward
County succeed and prosper. A key
business retention and expansion initiative
is BRAVO (Business Retention Assistance
and Visitation Outreach). Through this
program, representatives of the Alliance,
Broward County Office of Economic and
Small Business Development and local
municipalities and chambers of commerce
conduct visits to local businesses in an effort
to strengthen the local economy. In the
past year, more than 150 local companies
were visited through the BRAVO program.
The visits include discussions of programs
available to businesses wanting to expand in
Broward and information regarding issues
such as workforce development, international
trade and access to financing. In 2008, The
entrepreneur-centered economic growth
strategy is focused on an initiative created
by the State of Florida that allocated $10
the Florida Economic Gardening Institute
(FEGI), funded by the Florida Legislature
Minority/Small Business Development
While nearly 90 percent of Broward’s
businesses employ fewer than 25 people,
collectively they constitute the largest
sector of the county’s economy. These
small businesses provide a wide array of
products and services to private and public
customers.
In order to best serve this important group of
businesses, the Alliance is an active member
of many organizations that promote and
assist in the growth of minority and small
Additionally, each year the Alliance
awards membership scholarships to
Close-Up:
Hollywood
With an ideal location on Florida’s east
coast just minutes from Fort Lauderdale
and Miami, Hollywood businesses enjoy
convenient connections by sea, air and
land that help make the city a leader in
international trade, tourism and economic
development.
A Port City
Hollywood is home to over 10,000 businesses
and Port Everglades, the top container port
in Florida. With more than 3 million cruise
passengers annually and approximately $18 billion
in business activity, Port Everglades will soon
become the cruise ship capital of the world with
the home-porting of Royal Caribbean’s two new
5,400-passenger Oasis class vessels.
The port’s ties to Hollywood began with the
city’s founder, Joseph W. Young, who spearheaded
efforts to create the deep-water seaport after being
grounded in a speedboat on a mud flat in what was
then Lake Mabel. In February 1928, Young’s vision
for Port Everglades became a reality.
Precision laser cutting at Heico Corp. (NYSE: HEI
and HEI.A), an aerospace and technology company
headquartered in Hollywood.
Building Global Connections
Companies from Spain, Italy, U.K., Hong Kong,
Canada, Netherlands, Germany, Bermuda, the
Cayman Islands, etc. have established operations
in Hollywood. Due to its strategic location,
business services, skilled workforce, affordable
housing, exceptional health care and quality of life,
Hollywood is an ideal location for work and play. Its
international appeal is evident in the tremendous
growth in visitors from destinations in the U.K.,
Europe, South America, Canada and Scandinavia
who are taking advantage of new international
flights and discovering the city through its
marketing initiatives with tour operators, travel
agents and international media.
To build on these global connections,
Dr. Sri Sundararaman, Medical Director for Radiation Oncology at the
Memorial Cancer Institute utilizes the Cyberknife for treatment of
inoperable or surgically complex tumors. Memorial Healthcare System
(MHS) is the fifth-largest public healthcare system in the nation. Its
flagship hospital and the world renowned Joe DiMaggio Children’s
Hospital are in Hollywood.
Hollywood has established an Office of Business &
International Trade and has been recognized by the
U.S. Department of Commerce for strengthening
international business ties with commercial officers
throughout Europe, hosting trade missions and
conducting foreign trade seminars and workshops.
Business Services
• One Stop Business Services Center–a
monthly forum for current and prospective
business owners to readily obtain information
on business start-ups, permitting, fees,
programs, zoning, parking, etc.
• Hollywood Economic Lenders Partnership
(H.E.L.P.) Financial Consortium—a
consortium of major banks and financial
institutions created to help businesses
access capital through a single application
and review.
• Site Selection Services—the city provides
site selection reports based on a company’s
specifications.
• Enterprise Zone—Hollywood’s Port
95 Industrial Park is a state designated
Redevelopment From The Sand To The City
With more than $100 million in public
improvements made along Hollywood’s oceanfront,
the area is primed for sustainable redevelopment.
Plans are moving forward for the first Margaritaville
Beach Resort in Florida on a spectacular six-acre
city-owned site in the heart of Hollywood Beach.
The 350 room resort/conference/restaurant/retail
complex is expected to be the ultimate evolution of
the Margaritaville escapism brand.
A dynamic Transit Oriented Development (TOD)
is slated for a 40 acre site located along I-95
adjacent to Tri-Rail and just minutes from Fort
Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Ecofriendly
Sheridan Station is currently pre-leasing for
retail and office space.
The City of Hollywood is establishing a
Transit-Oriented Corridor (TOC) along State Road
7, a major north/south corridor through south
Florida with easy access to mass transit. This
will facilitate mixed-use, pedestrian-oriented
redevelopment.
Proposed Margaritaville Beach Resort
Enterprise Zone providing incentives
including job tax credits, sales tax refunds
and property tax credits. The city has made
application for an additional 2.03 square
miles of enterprise zone.
• Local Minority and Small Business
Enterprise (MBE/SBE) Program—Hollywood
provides locally based businesses training
and opportunities to obtain contracts with
the city.
For business assistance or information about
the City of Hollywood’s business programs
and services, contact the Office of Business
and International Trade at 954.921.3388 or
