Acoustics – Investigating the
drums
FBA in Physics
submitted to Mr. Helmut Lambauer
After an introduction about wave acoustics, Robert
analyzes the sounds of a timpani and a drum, investigating
the question whether the drum can be considered a
musical instrument. The result is surprising, it is and it is
not, depending on how the drum is adjusted.
Robert recorded and analyzed the sounds using a
computer programme.
In a second part, Robert investigates the loudness
of a drum based on the inverse-square law again using
a measuring device. He was able to show that the
loudness of a drum is comparable to the loudness at
the school buffet, and it is surpassed by the noise level
of an lower school PE class.
The FBA was written in English and was presented
in a structured, academic form. It has a personal note,
since Robert plays the drums himself.
The Behaviour of Gibbons as compared
to Great Apes
Comparing behavioural enrichment of
Siamangs, Brown Capuchins and Black
and White Ruffed Lemurs
FBA in Biology
submitted to Mr. Roland Stierschneider
The FBA focuses on Siamangs as representative of
the Gibbons, gives insight into behavioural ecology, the
communication, the reproduction and the upbringing
of the infants of these primates in comparison to other
monkeys and apes. The behavioural enrichment studies
and observations were carried out at the Herberstein
Zoo in the summer of 2006.
The Nuclear Power Accident of
Chernobyl
Comparing behavioural enrichment of
Siamangs, Brown Capuchins and Black
and White Ruffed Lemurs
FBA in Physics
submitted to Mr. Helmut Lambauer
Lena’s parents are both from the Ukraine, so it was
a natural choice for her to investigate the fatal accident
in Chernobyl. Lena describes the structure of a RBMK
reactor (like the one in Chernobyl) and compares it to
reactors that are used in the West. She also describes
how the accident happened and how the contamination
affected the people in the Ukraine and in Europe.
Lena also brought some food samples
from the Ukraine and had them investigated in
an Austrina lab. The results show that Ukrainian
food is no longer radioactively contaminated.
In a last section she interviews her parents, and lets
them present how they experienced the accident and
the information policy around it.
The FBA was written in English and was presented
in a structured, academic form.
Huntington’s Disease
Controversy of Presymptomatic Testing
and Genetic Counselling
FBA in Biology
submitted to Mr. Manfred Singer
Huntington’s disease is a late-onset genetic
disorder, which is characterized by chorea
and dementia. There is no full treatment
for the disease and usually 10-15 years
after the outbreak the patients die. With
new genetic technology individuals who
may have inherited the disease can have
themselves tested even before symptoms
arise. For these patients both genetic and
psychiatric counselling are therefore of crucial
signifi cance. After considering all aspects of
the disease, including presymptomatic testing
and counselling, the student fi nally comes to
the conclusion that legalizing preimplantation
diagnostics in Austria would improve the
situation for Huntington’s disease patients.
