PATRIAM
DESID ERANTE S MELIOREM
Summer 2010
Goodbye and Thank You!
Time passes, things change, but what remains is the dream of a country that lives
up to our aspirations, as so rightly reflected in the motto of the Order of Canada,
Desiderantes meliorem patriam, or “They desire a better country.”
It is a country where the difference of some is a treasure for others, where individual
interests encompass the interests of the wider world. A country where women and men,
the young and young-at-heart, Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal peoples alike all have equal
rights and opportunities.
A country where research, scientific and technological advances serve the well being of
humankind. A country that recognizes the important, indeed vital, role of our artists and
how they touch the soul of our society. A country that wants to excel in all fields.
And a country where the solitudes I have so often spoken of, solitudes that continue to
condemn far too many of us to distress and exclusion, are finally being broken down to
make way for sharing, solidarity and compassion.
I would like us to continue together, in our own way, the work of those who came before
us. And this work, which we will have enriched with our ideas, our convictions, our
discoveries, our commitments—our lives, really—will continue on with those who will
come after us, in new ways, in a different time.
As you are no doubt aware, I will soon begin a four-year mandate as UNESCO Special Envoy for Haiti. However, I will
remain committed to my fellow Canadians through the Michaëlle Jean Foundation.
The purpose of this foundation will be to support the many cultural and social players, as well as youth-serving and
youth-led organizations, who are leading constructive citizen activities all across the country by using artistic expression
and creativity to strengthen and reinforce social ties in Canada.
I therefore bid you farewell and thank you from the bottom of my heart for supporting me over the past five years and
for giving me the pleasure of sharing your friendship and your love of Canada!
Her Excellency the Right Honourable
Michaëlle Jean, C.C., C.M.M., C.O.M., C.D.
