Wow, what a year! And it’s not over yet! We’ve still got a sculpture workshop, our Spooky Art Show,
our great Ansel Adams photography show and our holiday events to end 2008’s long celebration of
this museum being founded fifty years ago by the Junior Service League.
We’re in good company. Texas Bank and Trust, STEMCO and
Temple Emanu-El were also started in 1958. Nationally, Crayola
crayons were introduced in 1958 on the children’s show I watched,
Captain Kangaroo--ironically shown in black and white! Have you
heard about the new crayon colors coming out this year with names
like “Happiness” instead of “Rosebud Pink”? Can you believe with the
‘60s and ‘70s it took this long to come up with that idea? Then (and
this is looming much more personally for me) AARP was chartered in
1958. As part of the Captain Kangaroo generation, I am becoming a
member of the American Association of Retired Persons (due to my
darling husband). If I thought it was rough with the museum turning
50 this year, just wait until it hits me next year!
However, the museum will not be retiring. We’re just getting started! We’ve got BIG plans for
the future and look forward to sharing them with you--starting with our New Year’s Eve Bash for
2008/2009! Come ring in the new year in LMFA style, with lots of food, drink, music and fun!
Hope to see you soon!
Then & Now
1926 2008
Take a look at how our current building looked back in 1926! The Main Street
program that the City of Longview is involved in will match funds up to $15,000
for any face lifts we want to do out front. If you’d like to donate to our building
renovation fund, we’d like to upgrade our look on Tyler Street and incorporate
the ArtWorks building into the facade’s flow, so we can help downtown look
even better!
