FROM THE PRESIDENT
A Look Back...
Almost two years have passed since I stepped into my role as President of the LMFA’s board of trustees. As I
prepare to turn the reins over to Frank Chaney, our incoming president this January, I find myself reflecting on
the people I’ve met and grown to admire and on all I have learned about the
museum’s history and its amazing permanent collection.
It wasn’t until I began looking at the scrapbooks that I realized how many
people in our community were involved in the start-up of this incredible
museum, - people like Betty Bodenheim, Jane Akins, Linda Butter Thomas,
Jack Vanderwoude, Charles Frith, Shirley Griffin, and Bill Stoudt. I am proud
to be in such good company.
Saturday, December 6 from 9 - 10:30A.M.
Breakfast is $15 per person, adults and children.
At 10:30 the wagon from Gregg County Historical Museum will arrive to
take everyone around the block to see their train and toy display.
Our current board of directors continues this great tradition of innovative ideas
and dedication. Here are a few of the highlights from the past 21 months.
• We celebrated the LMFA’s 50-year anniversary with 50 hours of
non-stop art-filled education and entertainment.
• We succeeded in building name recognition for the LMFA and in energizing enthusiasm for art
in Longview through the anniversary celebration and its publicity.
• We honored the Junior Service League who founded the art museum in 1958.
• We developed drawings and plans for the downtown sculpture garden.
• We increased membership by 33% and raised $36,210 in the process.
• We expanded our summer art classes and have plans for Saturday art classes to start this fall.
• We had our permanent collection re-appraised increasing its value from $450,000 to over a million dollars
and we spurred the creation of detailed educational plaques for the collection.
• Finally, we collaborated with the Live Music Fine Arts concert series, bringing great music to downtown
Longview in an intimate and sophisticated location.
These are all terrific accomplishments and the board has more dreams and visions to fulfill. I look forward
to watching the LMFA continue to evolve and change and to be a significant role player in the future of our
growing city.
I would like to thank Renee, our director, and the great volunteers who serve with me on the board of directors.
I’m particularly going to miss Jack Barkley, Will Blair, Jason Butler and Stephen McDaniel, who are rolling off
the board this year. I have made lasting friendships, laughed a lot and learned so much about the fascinating
world of art and the role it plays in history. Thank you for all your commitment to the LMFA and to the city of
Longview.
Gratefully Yours,
