EVA FRANCO
FROM FLEA MARKET TO FAME, LA’S COLORFUL FASHION DESIGNER
BY SARA BERKES
PHOTOGRAPHED BY ALEXIS CHONG
Her clothing is sweet and whimsical with a retro
twist. She clearly has an eye for prints - sweet bows
to bright florals to edgy geometrics. Many of which
she develops herself, working with fabric mills
around the world. Designing and constructing her
garments entirely in Los Angeles, Eva Franco’s
clothing is sold in over 800 stores worldwide—quite a departure
from her humble beginnings as an ethnic Hungarian political
refugee to America at 10 years old.
Coming from the communist country of Transylvania, clothing
was one of the first things Franco noticed about America. “I came
from a communist country where we just had uniforms. Clothing
for me has always been a way to acclimate and kind of to express
myself,” she says. “If I had been born here, who knows? I’m sure I’d
still be doing something creative, but I think that clothing was just
such a huge impact at the age of 10.”
Knowing she wanted to study fashion by the age of 13, Franco
attended FIT in New York after graduating from high school, moving
two years later to Paris where she worked for a year as an intern. “It
was good for me to go back to Europe and realize that there’s such a
huge difference between Europe and America,” she says. “America is
a country where there are so many rags-to-riches stories and there’s
a reason for it, the spirit of America is very much about that. In
Europe I faced a lot of closed doors and the burden of history.”
After Paris, Franco returned to New York, where she was
approached by one of her former professors. She was encouraged
to go to the Philippines and open her first company with him,
which she says was great, “because I failed. And you learn a lot, so
it was great. Failure’s great—it’s part of the journey. I realized that
I do not want to live in Asia and have this huge commute and be
so disconnected, and I just couldn’t see how I could ever make a
product that could really bear my name, so that was the reason that I
went back to New York.”
Still reeling from her failure in the Philippines, Franco
decided to take a break from fashion and got into acting, which is
how she ended up in Los Angeles, the city that would later be the
source of her success.
“I came out here to do a soap opera—I thought I was going
to go down that path, and for about 5 years I was doing both. I just
thought, okay - I’ll do clothing on the side.”
EVA FRANCO
Franco started selling a small rack of clothing at the Fairfax Flea
Market, which was right by her house at the time. She thought, “oh I’m
just going to take five dresses, ten dresses and see what I can sell. To me
it was always like, well, I’m acting, and I’m going
to do this on the side. And then the two went
“I can’t imagine if
I lived in New York
that I would be as
colorful. As much as
LA is known for its
casualness, I feel like
that’s even more reason
to be needed here.”
down a path where they were competing and
it came to a point where I had to decide and I
chose fashion.”
For Franco, the choice was easy. “They’re
both creative, they’re both expressing oneself,”
she says, “but I liked the control of being
creative when I wanted to as opposed to being
cast in something.”
She quickly moved into a studio space,
just a few blocks away from the one she has
now, taking care of every aspect of the company
herself. “Every job at this company, at my
company, I’ve done myself,” she says. “I’m kind
of like a person that thinks, oh, how do you
produce this? And I figure it out on my own, which a lot of designers
probably don’t want to deal with. I think it was the only way that I
could really understand the industry from all different points. It forces
your creativity to get more in tuned with understanding this industry,
not just from a creative standpoint but also like, what can I create that
will actually sell?”
Although undeniably successful, Franco’s experience has taught
her that nothing is guaranteed, and nothing should be taken for
granted. “We’re up against so many big labels and corporations, and
the only thing that I have is the freedom to create and to be nimble and
to be doing things that I believe in,” she says. “I think if I was designing
for a big company I might not put a fox on my shirt, or a penguin,
you know, creatively explore things and then see if it resonates with
customers.”
As for her key customer, Franco prides herself
on the fact that any woman, from an 18 year old to
her mother, can find something in the collection to
suit her. “I definitely try to make things that are not
just for size 0 women and I think I understand that
if she’s going to go out for dinner she doesn’t want
to have to worry about sucking in her stomach in
a tight dress. I think I use myself also, like, would
I wear this? Would I feel comfortable? I have a lot
of Eva Franco in my closet,” she laughs. “Too much
actually.”
And how big a role has the sunny city of Los
Angeles played in the success of the Eva Franco
brand? “Living in Los Angeles I can’t imagine if I
lived in New York that I would be as colorful,” she
says. “As much as LA is known for its casualness, I
feel like that’s even more reason to be needed here. There are so many
t-shirts and denim out here, that didn’t appeal to me at all. I really
wanted to create whole looks that are really structured and tailored and
sort of this 50s vibe, where people are put together a little bit more.”
Clearly, her customers feel the same yearning for a less casual
LA. “It really started with me walking around in my dresses that I
would design for myself. Seeing the world react to me, it inspired me
to do more of it. I mean, if I walked around and nobody said anything
about what I was wearing, maybe I wouldn’t be here today.”
Eva Franco can be found online at shop.evafranco.com and at
stores across the USA.
APOLIS
TWO BROTHERS, ONE STORE, WORLD MESSAGE
MEET RAAN AND SHEA PARTON, two brothers from Santa
Barbara who had an idea, a big idea: merging commerce with cause.
Located in the heart of the downtown Arts District, they serve as a
model for a new kind of retail experience; not only a store but a
gallery and a concept that empowers communities.
The store is called Apolis, can you explain the meaning of the word?
The term “apolis” means global citizen, can you explain the concept
behind the store? Apolis, in Greek translates to 'Global Citizen',
embodies our brand in many aspects, and now also our retail store
as well. We co-design products with artisan groups around the world
(15 countries and counting...) to create products that gives them access
to a larger marketplace and the opportunity for growth and skill
development. In the store, this can be visually seen with our changing
messaging on the walls, showing the impact of one item as it goes
from artisan to the end buyer in a process we call “Advocacy Through
Industry”. We also showcase our films that we have documented about
each international partner on the shop wall, which adds the faces and
sounds of the artisans to the overall brand story.
Raan and Shea
Parton at the
entrance to Apolis
Working as brothers, who does what? We work well together, taking
very different daily roles within the company and business. Raan
focuses on product design, sourcing and manufacturing. Shea focuses
on the operations, brand strategy and messaging. Our amazing small
team all wears many hats so no two days are ever the same.
You found the Arts District fairly early—what year did you move in? In
2007, we moved our offices to the Arts District and at the time it was
nothing like it is today. Much more gritty and desolate, there was a
neighborhood of creatives that have been in this area for decades. We
felt that in most metropolitan areas, the arts community continues to
revive and be the center of change so we established our business here,
hoping and expecting change. Our retail store opened in 2011 around
the corner from our original offices and the Arts District and now it
hosts some of the best new coffee shops, retail and restaurants in the
city and it’s fun to be a part of the growing area.
In addition to the retail space, you also have the Common Gallery. Can
you explain what happens there? Our Apolis flagship store is called
Common Gallery. It is one and the same - retail shop in front,
offices in the back. More than just simply a storefront, we host many
community events there to extend our passions of global citizens
doing great things through film premieres, hosting international
guests, music and book signing events, photo exhibits, etc. Our
goal with the store is also to have a true feeling of hospitality when
someone walks in, offering them a coffee or place to sit and have a
friendly conversation while they shop.
In terms of style, what are the major influences? We are most
influenced by our own personal global travels and the process in
which we all take to get to the end destination. Also our coastal
upbringing and love for the ocean keeps the items refined but
casual, approachable with a west coast feel. Our Standard Issue
items, mostly made within 10 miles of our downtown LA office,
are well designed basics for everyday wear. Our Transit Issue and
Development Projects are products thoughtfully sourced with the
various groups around the world.
ROCK STAR CHIC
The Dark Side of Fashion
CURATED by Patrice Farameh
CREATIVE DIRECTION
by Susanne Schaal
This month, Barney’s
will team with the
Jay Z collection and
offer an edition of
Rock Star Chic: The Dark Side
of High Fashion with a limited
250 numbered copies. The book
is a visual journey of over 300
photographs with fashion’s most
cutting-edge photographers, designers
and stylists exposing the
“ominously beautiful obsession
with the bad boy aesthetic and
reveals what draws us into the
darkness, providing a daring
testament to the love affair with
the gloomy, sultry side of Rock
‘N Roll.”
To better understand the
concept we aked editor Patrice
Farameh to explain:
What is the concept behind the book?
The book explores the dark side of
high fashion with visual imagery
provided by photographers, stylists
and designers who embody this aes-
thetic in their work. This fashion phenomenon
has usually been attributed to the modern-day
“rock star” style - the performance acts of rebellion
set to music.
Rock Star Chic has many meanings, organized
by its 5 chapters: Tribal nomads to portray
the modern-day bohemian gypsy, feathers and
fringes, leather and python. Sometimes the
symbols elude to death, but again mainly as a
symbol of rebellion, such as the use of skulls
and the color black, in the chapter Dark Angels.
Some of the fashion is inspired by the new
“gothic glamour” revival, or the current obsession
with the dark underworld and vampires,

ROCK STAR CHIC
or dark fetish fantasies, as in the chapter
Vamp Glam. This book is set up like
an art exhibition in printed form, as a
catalog of all the people who create their
artwork with these themes in mind.
We are visually presenting the
obsession in the current fashion world
with the “dark side.” You saw it on the
runways with some of the world’s most
prestigious fashion houses in the last two
seasons, including the new Punk: Chaos
to Couture exhibition at the MET. Some
of the fashion accessories are laced with
emblems of sorcery and eroticism, which
attracts many designers alike.
Tell us a little about the Curated Collection.
I launched this small publishing house
about 2 years ago as a way to create some
very limited edition exclusive publications
after a decade producing books for
other publishers and corporate clients.
It was a way to let the creative energy
loose without any economic restrictions
and editorial rules; as a way to provide
a platform for other creative people to
showcase their work. We usually have a
good mix of the established designers and
artists, but mainly strive to give a stage for
the emerging visionaries to shine in our
books and have the exposure they deserve.
Our vision is that you defy the aphorism
“Don’t judge a book by its cover.” We put
a huge amount of effort into the covers of
each book and already launched two limited
edition art book projects that have original
works of art on the the covers by six
international contemporary artists (SKULL
PHOTO BY KENNETH WILLARDT MODEL: NIK DE BERRY
STYLE and FOR WHICH IT STANDS).
ROCK STAR CHIC will also be available as
a limited edition version sold exclusively at
Barney’s New York as one of the exclusive
products featured in the BNY SCC Gallery
curated by Jay Z. This was a great compliment
to have one of our limited edition
books included in this exciting exhibition
of the most prestigious companies in the
world.
ARTS DISTRICT
DOWNTOWN’S NEW BOHEMIA COMES OF AGE
Blink and you could miss it. It is after all, a dense, small
neighborhood situated in the lower end of downtown
Los Angeles. It looks and feels like New York’s Meat
Packing district, but it is earnestly LA: graffiti is
everywhere, parking is nearly worth fighting over. The good
news is, there are parking meters with 10 hour parking.
It runs from the eastern side of downtown and borders
Alameda Street on the west, the 101 freeway on the north
and the LA river to the east. An industrial neighborhood, it
still houses a rail yard, cold storage, furniture and fashion
design and merchandising studios, government facilities
and film locations (The 6th Street Bridge has been featured
in productions such as “Terminator 2”, the classic musical
“Grease”, “Lost”, “The Amazing Race” and music videos for
Madonna, Kanye West and Kid Rock, among others.)
In the 1970s the neighborhood became popular with the
arts community with large spaces for live/work to buy and
rent.
In 1981, the City of Los Angeles passed the AIR ordinance
(artist-in-residence), which allowed former industrial
buildings to be used as art spaces, which up until this time
had been done, but was illegal. As with much of LA, the area
soon gentrified bringing a host of new residents, not so much
artists but those attracted to the artistic lifestyle.
At night, the place is transformed into a crawlers paradise.
There are lines for The Wurstküche on East 3rd, an exotic
sausage grill. Villains Tavern is the ideal night pub, remotely
art+design VISUALS
ERIC NASH’S LOS ANGELES
PAINTER OF THE ORDINARY REVEALS THE EXTRAORDINARY BY SARA BERKES
How do you choose your subject matter?
I have always spent a lot of time driving around. And
I’ve always been into movies. I have always loved what
is called an “establishing shot” which is an image to
introduce a scene or start a story or hit home an idea—a
simple visual reference or icon that is worth a thousand
words. As soon as I got my driver’s license I hopped into
the car and started driving wherever my mood took me on
the laconic Illinois prairie where I grew up. During a drive,
I’m in a sort of twilight mode of half aware and half in a
dream, and every once in a while on the open road there’s
that moment in the periphery of your vision that somehow
comes into focus for a split second and sears itself into
your memory, and you say “That’s it.” And usually that’s
the essential moment or icon that no matter who you are,
you’ll recognize it anew.
Capturing mere moments of LA in his hyper-realistic
style, artist Eric Nash paints the mundane glances
from the human eye. Often cropped against the sky,
Nash’s studies of freeway signs, palm trees, traffic,
and the ubiquitous orange “76” ball render ordinary
moments both beautiful and melancholic. Working in oil,
charcoal, and photography, everything Nash creates is influenced
by what he perceives as the darkness hiding beneath the sunny
skies of Los Angeles—the dichotomy between dark and light
that is the essence of human life.
I noticed you work with a variety of mediums. Do you have a
favorite?
Drawing is my first love so it has to be charcoal. It’s the
most primitive of media—charcoal sticks on the cave
wall. It’s of fire, carbon, earth, and universe compacted to
create an unbelievably dark hue. I don’t believe in black, as
there’s no such thing in nature. Charcoal is a deep, insane,
crazy purple ashen blue red gray.
How did you begin making art?
At age three and a half I was finger-painting a battleship
in preschool in the basement of the Methodist Church in
Urbana, Illinois. It felt good and I said, “This is it.” And that
was it.
Do you work from a photograph? Life? Memory?
I work from all of the above. I take pictures constantly and
use them as starting points. I’m also on a constant search
for those right moments or icons. I remember things that
stand out and if they pop up in my mind over and over
again I sketch them out and then go looking for visual
references to make it happen. For me, photography is a
form of sketching and a definite part of my process, but
only as a base layer to build from, enhance, or edit down.
Once you go to a canvas, anything can happen.
Can you describe your artistic process?
If something such as an image or place sticks in my
subconscious mind and re-emerges over and over again,
I want to make it or recreate it. It’s like a thing I have
to do to get something out of my head. To do this I am
constantly looking for that key image. I love images. I am
an image whore and so in love with images that I like to
paint or draw them to create my own little world. That’s all
I really care about aside from friends and family.
ERIC NASH’S LOS ANGELES
What other artists influence your work?
Edward Hopper did it for me at a
young age. I was 14 years old and I
went to a retrospective of his work
at the Art Institute of Chicago. When
I saw the work, it was a complete
transfiguration. Here were paintings
that were more real than real. And
these were moments that everyone
saw and felt no matter who you
were. It was deeply human yet
very distant and lonely at the
same time. After Hopper it would
have to be Cindy Sherman for her
utter sense of humanity, story and
drama in one image. It was her
nod to Hollywood cinema. Hopper
was also a fan of cinema and of
saying as much as you could with
one image. Then, of course, there
is Ed Ruscha and his conceptual
singular graphic sensibility, which
is brilliant. I could go on and on.
I noticed you’ve done various studies of the
“76” sign. What is its significance to you?
I’ve done 76 signs for about 8 years
now. I don’t know what it is, but I know
exactly what it is. I think, firstly, it’s the
intense orange hue vibrating against
the utterly blue sky of California. Then
there’s the fact that it looks like a lollipop
and everyone who has ever been in a
car recognizes and remembers it. It’s
like a pin on the vast and never-ending
landscape of the West. It’s both nostalgic
and completely contemporary at the
same time. And, of course, there’s the
idea of ’76, which is when the United
States was founded, as well as the idea
that it is a giant oil corporation, which is the underlying
reality to our existence. In no way do I mean anything
political. As with most art that I love, it just is.
How long does it take you to complete a piece of art?
Well, to paraphrase Mark Rothko, a lifetime. Seriously,
anyone who really paints doesn’t think about time. But
good question. I love paintings because they somehow
make things more real and alive whether they take one
hour, one month, or one year. Soul is timeless.
You grew up in Illinois and live in Palm Springs, yet most of your
paintings are scenes from Los Angeles.
I did grow up in central Illinois but in reality I grew up in
California in my young mind. My mother was an Army brat
who went to high school in San Luis Obispo and out of the
15 other places she lived before age 18 that was the only
one she loved and talked about. California. It’s a lovely
place. Plus, every TV show and movie that I liked seemed
to be filmed in California. It was like the ideal—hyper-real
in light and clarity. And that’s what I
want my paintings to be. The mood,
space, and light of LA are almost
surreal. I use both places as my
muse. LA as a stand in for all places.
Palm Springs and the West have that
epic, ancient, wide-open lonely feel I
love. These places in addition to Las
Vegas are so utterly American and
they do it for me like no other place
visually and emotionally. “Welcome
to LA, a dark and sunny place,” is
what I always say. And since I’m into
painting dark and light both literally
and figuratively, it works.
Much of your art, especially your
studies of skulls and ravens, has a sense
of darkness and melancholy. Is this a
reflection of your own life?
Where do we begin? I did
experience a lot of death and
insanity at a young age within my
family and that left a mark and made
me appreciate black comedy, morbid
beauty, and the like. Life in general
is a contrast between darkness and
light and there is intense beauty
in both. It is the core essence of
the universe. And in some sense,
they are one, as many philosophies
from around the world point out.
Both of those icons, much like the
76 sign is an icon, are so common
as to be ignored—the skull, which
is ubiquitous, and the raven, which
appears in every single culture from
the desert to the arctic. And yet both
are about life in the larger sense,
immortality and humanity. The raven
is among the most intelligent creatures. It mates for life,
yet cheats on that mate. It steals. It loves. It hovers above
us. It has been a subject of poetry from Poe to the Bible
to the caves at Lascaux. The skull for me is the essence of
LA. It is the last material item left of our existence. They’ve
found skulls that are millions of years old. It’s Goth. It’s
death. It’s morbid and scary. Or it’s life. It’s like Hamlet
talking to the skull. The skull is the longest and most
singularly important human icon because it reminds us of
our mortality. Everyone has used it. But I chose to do it as
straightforward as possible. The Mexicans have blessed
death-phobic North Americans with the idea of the skull
being the symbol of memories of loved ones, spirit, soul,
and eternal life. And in my skulls I try to bring this sense of
morbid happiness and eternal life. After all, in LA, isn’t that
why we all come here?
Life in general is a
contrast between
darkness and light
and there is intense
beauty in both. It is
the core essence of
the universe.
PEEP-TOE BOOTS
We got a lot of peep-toe action last season during the warmer months,
and it was pure bliss. Fortunately the trend is far from over. Peep toes
are back and thriving just in time for fall. They’re a sexy addition to a
leather skinny or a skirt of any lengths, and why not throw in a pop of
color with a pair of tights.
4
CLEATED PLATFORMS
Effortlessly work the sport-luxe trend in a
pair of chunky cleated platforms. They’ll
toughen up any floral ensemble or take
any edgy look to the next level. We love
Loeffler Randal’s Calla-HCVC shoe,
because it’s so versatile. Day or night,
work or play, this shoe will take you just
about anywhere in one of this season’s
hottest trend.
5THE METAL TOE
We’ve seen the metal toe
in several collections, but
it seems to be one of those
trends that’s snowballing. In
a great way.
Greg LaVoi
Los Angeles designer revives the iconic House of Irene
By Diane Lieu
photograhed by kai he
Often times, American fashion houses fall prey to the quiet
deaths. Unlike their European cousins, they don’t often go
into redux with a big name designer at the helm. This was
not the case with American Fashion House of Irene, the
iconic American costume designer of the 30’s, 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. Her
creations, known to be beautiful and well-crafted, were worn by the
likes of Carole Lombard, Ginger Rogers and Doris Day. Lauded for
beautiful cuts that accentuated
female figures that turned heads,
Irene pieces are prized vintage
collector’s treasures. They were
dubbed “California Elegance” by
British Vogue; a true accomplishment.
Unfortunately, she died at
age 62 feeling rather forgotten
by Hollywood. Fortunately, the
fashion world welcomed her influence
in the house’s re-launch
for Fall 2013. Now under direction
of Hollywood costume designer
Greg LaVoi, whose crafty
blend of understated classics and
chic modern look gives his designs
a certain glow, they made
their way down the runway at
the Kyoto Gardens Rooftop here
in Little Tokyo. From the 50’s
style slim pencil skirts in soft
colors resembling Monet’s palette
to the intricate lattice details,
GREG LAVOI
his collection felt like a dreamy
stroll through a mid-century garden.
Irene’s couture standards are seemingly safe in the hands of
LaVoi who started as a sketch artist for Bob Mackie before designing
the wardrobes of country music superstars and A-list celebrities.
This re-launch sustains an American art form with much history
and thankfully creates a demand for further revival of American luxury
fashion houses.
STYLE FASHION WEEK
LOS ANGELES’ BIGGEST FASHION EVENT OF 2013
BY LEI PHILLIPS
PHOTOGRAPHY BY
KAI HE
106
LA FASHION NOVEMBER 2013

One week during the Indian
Summer month of Oc tober, Los
Angeles plays host to a series of
fashion events called Style Fashion
Week. The event brings together the best LA
designers and provides a unique showcase to
witness the best fashion LA has to ffer.
Style Fashion Week this year was a daily fashion
affair with each of the 5 days becoming
progressively more exciting as high-profile
celebrities made their appearances such as:
Lindsay Lohan, Kendall & Kylie Jenner, Scott
Disick, Alessandra Ambrosio, Dita Von Teese,
Adam Lambert, Bobby Brown, Tia Mowry,
Floyd Mayweather, Draya Michele and Jacob
Busch. The impressive event was held at L.A.
LIVE and received a strong endorsement by
Curren D. Price Jr., Councilman for the City
of Los Angeles, who gave praise to Style Fashion
Week co-founder, Veronica Welch and a
successful 6th season.
The huge tent set up in the upper parking
area of L.A. Live included a long red carpet
entrance and housed 2 fashion runway areas, a
large bar in the center and a private VIP area.
Around the inside of the tent were sitting
areas providing much needed rest between
each of the 5 daily runway events running for 5
consecutive days. The venue was indeed large
enough to house many luxury product vendors
including exhibitions of art and of course
our very own LA Fashion Magazine.
Each day of Style Fashion Week was dynamic
and each collection was diverse. Starting
with the likes of Octavio Carlin, Malan
Breton and Michael Costello where lavish,
elegant gowns and free flowing mesmerizing
silhouettes were displayed. Marco Marco and
Andre Soriano gave a show of excitement and
fun. Betty Page is a moving force for women
to celebrate their desires and their femininity.
The last day of Style Fashion Week showed
that fashion can excel at excess with Furne
One’s concept of “good vs evil” which elated
the L.A. Fashion week attendees.
All of the designers were set in place to
show Los Angeles is a fashion force not to be
underestimated. Style Fashion Week continues
to grow with events scheduled twice a year
in March and October.
THE RUNWAYREPORT
CONCEPT: LA
A VERITABLE FEAST
FOR FASHION
At the kickoff of Los Angeles Fashion Week
SS14, Concept (LA) was an all-day event
at Quixote Studios on Saturday, October
12th in West Hollywood. Studio doors were
opened to the hundreds of fashion’s younger
cohorts - bloggers and fashionistas among
them. Installations that showed apparel as
art glittered in between the runway shows.
Here’s a behind the scenes look at the magical
moments in all the chaos.
SUNSET GOWER STUDIOS, the official
title sponsor of L.A. Fashion Weekend
once again rolls out the red carpet
for another weekend of beauty, fashion
and fun! Winding down the fashion
filled week with an open bar, great music
from L.A.’s 97.1-radio station and complimentary
makeup consultations. Geisha Studio Makeup
Academy provided the flawless makeup seen on the
models. Planet Salon provided complimentary consultations
and they provided the gorgeous hair seen on the
runway models. The NOBU Hotel at Caesar’s Palace is a
new luxurious hotel in Las Vegas where a cultural fusion
of East meets West. The hotel was one of the sponsors of
the night offering samples of their signature Sake wine
to guests. The guests mingled and lounged before the
runway show began. Rollasole offered samples of their
adorable emergency slippers. The runway event kicked
off with an introduction from host Mikey Koffman, CEO
and executive producer of LA Fashion week followed by
a runway show introduction from NOBU Caesars Palace
featuring a few models in gorgeous gowns. As official
sponsors of the event they offered five lucky guests a free
night stay at the NOBU Caesar’s Hotel.
Nathanaelle Couture opened the runway show with her Spring 2014 collection.
Her designs are always so feminine, chic and classy. Using lace in most
of her designs she adds a touch of femininity and vintage feel to the collection. I
love how she recreates the old vintage style with modern glamour. Chloe Evangeline
turned up the
heat on the runway
with sexy neutrals,
soft flowing dresses
and animal prints
with a touch of turquoise
blues. Her
sexy safari prints
made her comfortable
yet chic designs,
ready for that
trip to a tropical
paradise resort. The collection had a sensual yet bohemian vibe to it.
Piper Gore was also one of my favorite designers of the night adding a
California glam to her Spring Summer Collection 2014. Again going back to
basics and staying with neutrals while adding a pop of color seems to be the
trend. One of my favorites was the gold jumper, which is so glamorous and light
enough to wear on a hot summer day yet so elegant. The white shorts and vest
and the bubble gum pink short outfit with jacket are another favorite giving it
that Malibu Barbie look, perfect for summer and giving it that youthful sexy
look. After the show the crowd headed for an after party at the W Hotel where
the party continued.
LA legends
It’s 1966 and a new TV
series, Star Trek has
just aired. The Beatles
released the controversial
“Yesterday and Today”
album cover, and quickly
pasted over the “butchered”
covers with a more serene
image. It was the year Vogue
editor-in-chief, Diana
Vreeland declared, “This is
the year of do it yourself.”
On the west coast,
The Doors had just
released their first album
featuring “Light My Fire”
and the Sunset Strip was
experiencing riots due to a
new curfew law of 10 PM.
That was the year
this image was taken by
photographer Bill Claxton
of his wife, Peggy Moffitt
wearing an outfit by
Los Angeles designer,
Rudi Gernreich. This
collaboration would
become legendary as the
threesome would produce
some of the most iconic
fashions and images from
the 60s and 70s.
Rudi Gernreich, Peggy Moffitt, and William Claxton.
“Fashion will
go out of fashion.”
