In addition to mandatory registration and basic educational standards compliance, PCTIA also developed an even higher standard, specifically for private career training institutions—the “Standard of Accreditation”. This accreditation is based on criteria that enable private career training institutions in B.C. to qualify for financial support programs from StudentAid BC and the EQA (Education Quality Assurance). To achieve accreditation, institutions must maintain a quality standard well above PCTIA’s basic education benchmark. Your Training Association, the OETA, meets the more stringent of these standards – the full Standard of Accreditation criteria – and has so for many years. The Association originally applied for and received full PCTIA Standard of Accreditation in 2007 and has successfully passed annual audits conducted by PCTIA since that time. The PCTIA review is comprehensive; their auditors review everything from the Association’s administration, its policies and procedures, program development and delivery, facilities, equipment, instructor qualifications and upgrading, and student related benefits and issues. For 2013, being our 5th year of our accreditation status, we are required to complete an even more extensive review of our institution to ensure it is compliant, and continues to offer the best training methods and facilities to students. This review is underway and we look forward to PCTIA’s positive results. The advantages of accreditation are far-reaching and important to both the union and the Association: • Province-wide recognition as an accredited training institution assists the OETA in marketing its programs to all interested partners, whether they are individuals, groups, or corporate entities located across the Metro Vancouver area or rural regions of BC. • Accreditation provides assurance that the Association’s corporate sponsored training (such as First Nations training in the North) is of the highest standard. It also assures current and future members that the Association’s training is always current, relevant, and recognized by employers and professional training bodies. • Accreditation is a requirement for training programs recognized or financially supported by government organizations, such as the Industry Training Authority (apprenticeship programs), and Worksafe BC and Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (worker retraining). The Accreditation status also allows potential members to access various student loan programs to ease the costs of training as well as time taken off work. The Association also benefits from professional accreditation, and these can be seen at many different levels within the organization: • All OETA instructional staff are B.C. certified under the Provincial Instructors Diploma certification program. • Comprehensive student policies, procedures and expectations have been organized into a handbook facilitating a clear application process, and addresses student expectations and the reporting structure. • All program outlines, learning materials and student handouts have been formalized into professional standard resources.
