and then led the organization as president
in 1973. That same year, he was included
in the National Association of Home
Builders Lifetime Spike Hall of Fame. He
continues to serve as an NAHB Lifetime
Board of Directors member and a Life
Spike. Also in 1973, NAHB presented Mims
with an Honor Award for Outstanding
Achievement in Membership Development
at its national convention. In 1980, he was
again recognized by NAHB as membership
chairman and in 1984 as a Designated
Lifetime National Director.
In nominating Jervis Mims to the Hall
of Fame, Bobby Rayburn noted, “Jervis is a
role model in home building circles. As the
last remaining charter member of the
Hattiesburg Area Home Builders Association,
younger construction professionals have
called on him for guidance and advice.
In 1964, Mims and four other local
home builder association members adopted
and promoted a ‘Code of Ethics’ for the
chapter. This adopted code of ethics was
used as a guide to screen applicants who
wished to join the Hattiesburg chapter.
The Greater Hattiesburg Home Builders
Association is what it is today because of
the legacy that was established by Mims
and four other building pioneers.
More importantly than all of these facts
is how he has positively affected the lives
of hundreds of families that have enjoyed
his custom-built homes – over 45 years
of quality-built construction.”
In 1968, Mims was appointed to the
Forrest County AHS School Board. In
1970, he was appointed by Governor John
Bell Williams to the Forrest County School
Board for a six-year term. He received a
Service Award from the Forrest County
School Board in 1976. In 1998, he was
appointed by the Forrest County Board
of Supervisors to the Forrest County Park
Commission and served until 2001. During
his service on this board, numerous
industrial prospects were recruited, which
created hundreds of jobs in the Hattiesburg
community.
In the late 1970s, Mims began to develop
a subdivision that was over 200 acres. He
