a sudden thought appeared to strike her, and she turned hastily towards Humphrey.<br />

"Yes, yes, leave us, Cousin. I, too, have something to say to Mr. <strong>Fleetwood</strong> which must<br />

be said in private. Do not be afraid; it will not take me long."<br />

Seeing that he still hesitated she waved her hand petulantly.<br />

"Go, I say, go. Heavens, how slow you are! Why do you delay?”<br />

"Because I do not like to leave you in such keeping," responded Humphrey bluntly. "I<br />

have seen the strength of the fellow's influence over you. Goodness knows what he will<br />

make you believe — what rashness he may not persuade you to consent to."<br />

"You may set your fears at rest, Humphrey Charnock," said Rachel deliberately. "Mr.<br />

<strong>Fleetwood</strong>'s influence over me exists no longer. Come, that you may realise the fact,<br />

and since I suppose I must go somewhere, I give you leave to proceed now to the coach<br />

office and to engage a place for me in to-night's coach for London. I presume my aunt<br />

will take me in —she at least has never deceived me."<br />

“Not to-night!" cried Simon involuntarily; "you are not fit to travel farther to-night.<br />

Take at least some hours' repose."<br />

She turned upon him with a stony glance, resenting his audacity in still venturing to take<br />

thought for her, and after a moment's pause she again announced her intention of<br />

travelling by that night's coach.<br />

"<strong>The</strong> coach!" ejaculated Humphrey, "you would not travel by the common coach? No,<br />

dear Cousin, let us have a post-chaise. I will escort you."<br />

"A post-chaise," repeated Rachel; and then she laughed again and clasped her head with<br />

both hands.<br />

"Nay, no post-chaises for me." She shuddered. “Book<br />
