wealthy, the membership believed “being<br />
open to all was important.”<br />
From a committed Presbyterian<br />
Church in Virginia, we received a letter<br />
<strong>with</strong> these words: “God has been greatly<br />
blessing our AccessAbility ministry this<br />
year <strong>with</strong> new resources <strong>and</strong> growing interest<br />
<strong>and</strong> participati<strong>on</strong> by c<strong>on</strong>gregati<strong>on</strong><br />
members. Seventeen teens recently<br />
signed up to be buddies for our special<br />
needs children. The greatest blessing,<br />
however, has been the visible change in<br />
attitude <strong>on</strong> the part of many people who<br />
before had simply been unaware, uncomfortable,<br />
or uninterested. The message<br />
seems finally to be getting through<br />
that rather than being ‘weaker’ members<br />
of the church body, those <strong>with</strong> disabilities<br />
are ‘indispensable’ for its proper<br />
functi<strong>on</strong>ing.”<br />
The pastor of a Church of the Brethren<br />
in Pennsylvania sent a letter to us<br />
which enclosed the ACC Commitment<br />
On May 3, 2001 the 2,000th<br />
c<strong>on</strong>gregati<strong>on</strong> was enrolled in the<br />
Accessible C<strong>on</strong>gregati<strong>on</strong>s<br />
Campaign of the Nati<strong>on</strong>al<br />
Organizati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> Disability.<br />
Form. His c<strong>on</strong>cluding words were, “We<br />
take seriously the value of every individual<br />
in our community <strong>and</strong> what their<br />
special needs may be. We c<strong>on</strong>tinue to<br />
work very hard at resolving those needs<br />
as they come to our attenti<strong>on</strong>.”<br />
It was from the Council for Jews <strong>with</strong><br />
Special Needs, Inc. that we first learned<br />
of the welcoming temple in the Reform<br />
traditi<strong>on</strong> in Phoenix, Ariz<strong>on</strong>a. When<br />
they enrolled in the Accessible C<strong>on</strong>gregati<strong>on</strong>s<br />
Campaign, we learned that their<br />
worship space <strong>and</strong> religious school were<br />
totally accessible. We also learned that a<br />
group of young adults <strong>with</strong> developmental<br />
disabilities had held their high<br />
school prom at the temple.<br />
Recently we received a letter from a<br />
Catholic church in Sioux Falls, South<br />
Dakota. It began <strong>with</strong> these words: “We<br />
were excited to be part of the Accessible<br />
C<strong>on</strong>gregati<strong>on</strong>s Campaign <strong>and</strong> wanted to<br />
update you as to what we have d<strong>on</strong>e in<br />
our church.” That update included the<br />
fact that “parishi<strong>on</strong>ers <strong>with</strong> disabilities<br />
serve in all capacities, including greeters<br />
<strong>and</strong> gift bearers <strong>and</strong> participants in the<br />
homily <strong>and</strong> music.”<br />
One of the most welcoming c<strong>on</strong>gregati<strong>on</strong>s<br />
we have discovered is a n<strong>on</strong>-denominati<strong>on</strong>al<br />
church in Marin County,<br />
California. Presently, it has about 15<br />
members <strong>with</strong> developmental disabilities.<br />
Some are regular ushers, some are<br />
members of the men’s <strong>and</strong> women’s<br />
groups, some have joined committees,<br />
<strong>on</strong>e man leads the hospitality committee,<br />
a few have attended weekend retreats,<br />
<strong>and</strong> several have provided music<br />
during the Sunday worship service. In<br />
additi<strong>on</strong>, a number of families have befriended<br />
members <strong>with</strong> developmental<br />
disabilities <strong>and</strong> included them in weekend<br />
<strong>and</strong> after-church activities. This<br />
committed c<strong>on</strong>gregati<strong>on</strong> has come to realize<br />
that the most important accommodati<strong>on</strong><br />
we can offer some<strong>on</strong>e <strong>with</strong> disability<br />
is the gift of friendship.<br />
We close <strong>with</strong> <strong>on</strong>e final thought. The<br />
Accessible C<strong>on</strong>gregati<strong>on</strong>s Campaign is<br />
proof that inclusive, welcoming, committed<br />
c<strong>on</strong>gregati<strong>on</strong>s of many faiths exist<br />
throughout the nati<strong>on</strong>. They recognize<br />
that all of us, <strong>with</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>with</strong>out<br />
disabilities, have gifts <strong>and</strong> talents to<br />
share. They recognize that as there are<br />
no barriers to God’s love, there should<br />
be no barriers in God’s House.<br />
