Colleg-e <strong>of</strong> Commerce and Journalism<br />

Soon after the United States became invohed in war members <strong>of</strong> the stalf <strong>of</strong> the College <strong>of</strong> Commerce<br />

and Journalism were called on to render war service and they responded to every call which did<br />

not interfere too seriously with the work <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>. Over one-half the members <strong>of</strong> the staff<br />

<strong>of</strong> this college gave full time service in war work for a portion <strong>of</strong> the time our country has been at<br />

war and some <strong>of</strong> them have given continuous service almost from the beginning <strong>of</strong> the war.<br />

Of these, two resigned to enter the army, one gave a year's service in the <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> the State Draft<br />

Headquarters and another gave several months <strong>of</strong> service in this <strong>of</strong>fice. One is a member<br />

<strong>of</strong> Mr. Hoover's staff in Washington in charge <strong>of</strong> labor problenis <strong>of</strong> the Federal Food Administration.<br />

Two are with the United States Shipping Board. One organized and was in charge <strong>of</strong> the War Camp<br />

Community Service work <strong>of</strong> Louisville, Kentucky, for eight months, and had charge <strong>of</strong> similar work<br />

two months in El Paso, Texas, and three months in Detroit. Another had charge <strong>of</strong> the civilian relief<br />

work at Camp Sherman six months. Two were special investigators <strong>of</strong> the <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> the Federal Food<br />

Administrator <strong>of</strong> Ohio for three months. One has been executive secretary <strong>of</strong> the committee<br />

on patriotic education <strong>of</strong> the state branch <strong>of</strong> the Council <strong>of</strong> National Defense. Another has been<br />

Deputy Food Administrator <strong>of</strong> Ohio and in charge <strong>of</strong> the Division <strong>of</strong> Marketing and Head <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Civilian Relief Department <strong>of</strong> the Columbus Red Cross Society.<br />

<strong>The</strong> latter also conducted three Home<br />

Service Institutes for the training <strong>of</strong> civilian relief workers which were held under the joint auspices<br />

<strong>of</strong> the National Red Cross, the Local Red Cross and the Ohio State <strong>University</strong>.<br />

Another, while carrying<br />

a full time schedule in the <strong>University</strong>, gave much time to the war chest drive, two liberty loan<br />

drives, a red cross drive for nurses in Franklin County, and other activities.<br />

College <strong>of</strong> Dentistry<br />

<strong>The</strong>re are three members <strong>of</strong> the faculty <strong>of</strong> the college <strong>of</strong> Dentistry, having the dental degree, who<br />

are actively engaged in war service work as <strong>of</strong>ficers: Dr. John W. Means, Instructor in Oral Surgery,<br />

as a Major with the Medical Corps service, with base Hospital No. 22, now in France, is giving valuable<br />

service in plastic Surgery, especially in Restorations in the oral phase <strong>of</strong> Plastic Surgery. First Lieut.<br />

Lewis E. Reif, Instructor in Operative Dentistry, after spending a year as an operating dental <strong>of</strong>ficer at<br />

Camp Custer, is now with the 85th Division in France. First Lieut. Frank C. Starr, Instructor<br />

in Crown and Bridge, and Metallurgy, has been in France since August, 1917, as an Oral and Dental<br />

Surgeon with the Red Cross Hospital No. 2 in Paris.<br />

<strong>The</strong> fourteen remaining members <strong>of</strong> the Dental Faculty, who carry the degree <strong>of</strong> Doctor <strong>of</strong> Dental<br />

Surgery, have been actively engaged in the City <strong>of</strong> Columbus in work under the direction <strong>of</strong> the Prepardeness<br />

League <strong>of</strong> American Dentists. <strong>The</strong> work has been carried on under the supervision <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Dental Committee in connection with the Draft Board at Memorial Hall.<br />

<strong>The</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Dentistry has also averaged the same amount <strong>of</strong> time, not only to draftees, but also<br />

to enlisted men, during the past two years.<br />

Dean Seamans is a member <strong>of</strong> the Committee on Mobilization <strong>of</strong> Dental h.ducation activities-<br />

He also has served since the spring <strong>of</strong> 1917 as Preliminary Dental ['".xaminer for the Officer's Dental<br />

Reserve Corps.<br />
