Five
wrestlers
place in
two-day
tourney
Ry .TAMTF: POTE
Sports Editor
The Wildcat varsity
wrestling team finished up
the two-day, Marshfield
Tournament featuring 30
teams last Wednesday.
Wilmington finished in 18th
place with 86 points, while
league rival North Andover
won the meet.
The Wildcats had five different
individuals place in the
tournament including a fifth
place from James Perry
(160), sixth places from Cody
Halliday (135), Alex Furlong
(189) and Gordie Fitch (189)
and a seventh place from
Mike Amentola (289).
"There with 30 teams there
and a lot of very strong
teams," said Pimental. "And
you're going to see some of
these teams do very well at
the state level. There were a
wide range of teams an I
think this was a good measuring
tool for us because you
face kids from teams like
New Bedford, and you won't
see them again until the allstate
meet, so losing a match
in this tournament doesn't
ruin your season."
Certainly there were many
great matches ^nd highUghts
but Fitch stole the show.
"This is first year wrestling
kids you don't have any
expectations," said head
coach Mike Pimental. "All
you want to do is make sure
that kid has a good experience
with the program.
Gordie lost his first match
and came all the way back to
win four of his next five
matches to take his first varsity
tournament medal and I
think that was just tremendous
on his part. Right now
he's 6-6 in his first varsity
season with his first medal -
pretty impressive."
After losing his first match,
Fitch came back to win his
next four, the first by a 15-9
decision before posting pins
against Karl Andersen of
Sandwich (2:36), Bob Boyle of
Duxbury (3:14) and Billy Vey
(0:26), before losing his final
two matches to finish with the
sixth place finish.
Perry also had a very solid
tournament as he won his
first three matches placing
him into the semi-finals.
"He tweaked his shoulder so
we ended having him take an
injury default and that way
he could rest up for an hour
and see how his shoulder felt
after that," said Pimental.
"Wrestling is not the type of
sport where you can walk
away from pain - it's how pain
you can endure. But since this
is so early in the season, we
figured to take the injury
default and see how he felt
later on. If this was a sectional
or state meet, perhaps
maybe he would give it a
shot."
After going to the consolation
bracket, Perry lost his
first match before beating a
returning sectional champion,
Sean Coyle of Walpole to
finish in fifth place.
"James is 11-4 right now and
he's having a great season
thus far," said Pimental. "He
had a great tournament but
with his injury we're looking
for long term results."
Both Halliday and Furlong
finished in sixth place in their
respective weight classes.
Halliday lost his second
round match 8-4 to go into the
consolation bracket, and
from there he went 2-2 including
wins over Ryan Chapman
of Pembroke, 8-3, and Andrew
Masali of Plymouth South, 8-
2.
"I thought C!ody had an awesome
tournament," said
Pimental. "He's just looking
to fine tune things. The thing
about Cody is he really enjoys
the sport and is always trying
to pick up things and learn as
much as he can. He's always
watching other wrestlers trying
to pick up something they
do, and he's just trying to fine
tune things that he worked on
during the summer He lost
two very tight matches and I
think he was so close that he
could easily turn those losses
around and things would be
much different. He's 11-4 on
the season right now and he's
on his way to another tremendous
season."
The team's two big guys.
Furlong (189) and 'Big Mike'
Amentola (289) rounded out
the place finishers. Furlong
defeated Trevor Pace of
Brockton, 9-3, before falling
to James Fredericks of New
Bedford, 6-4. After that he
defeated his next two opponents,
the first by a pin and
then a 13-5 decision, before
losing his final two matches
to finish sixth.
"Alex had a great tourney,"
said Pimental. "He made it to
the semis and he should be
proud of what he accomplished.
He battled back after
a tough loss and on top of all
of that he wasn't feeling
well."
Amentola lost his first
match before winning his
next three including the last
two on pins under a minute
into each match. He then lost
to Marvin Jean of Walpole
before beating James Holbert
of Marshfield to take seventh
place.
"This is Mike's second
medal this year and he's just
a second year wrestler," said
the coach. "He also meddled
in the Sons of Italy tournament.
After he lost his first
match, he really had his work
cut out for him, but he kept
battling and he showed a lot
of pride by coming back as
strong as he did."
Tyler Strem (119), Sean
Adams (140) and Jeff
Goosens (152) each had a win
during the tournament, while.
Matt Diorio (103), Anthony
Vitale (U2) and Gaven Carta
(125) put forth strong efforts
but went 0-2.
Girls Track team runs
over Newburyport
The Wildcats defeated
Newburyport, 50-32, in a
Cape Ann League meet held
last "Riesday. Wilmington is
now 2-3 with the victory.
The top highlight of the
meet came from the trio in
the 600 as Rachel Alatalo
(1:53), Jess Maienza (2:01)
and Kerry Ryan (2:05) swept
that event giving the team
nine of its points.
Wilmington also finished
first and third in the hurdles
behind Savannah Hubbard
(10.5) and Maria Patrone
(U.8), second and third in
the 300 with Hannah Kelly
(48.8) and Holly Niemiec
(49.6), first and second in
the 1,000 as Kate Richardson
finished at 3:40 followed by
Lori Fletcher at 3:47, first
and second in the two mile
behind Nikki Sirignano
(12:53) and Alex Polcari
(13:50), first and third in the
mile behind Sydnee Russo
(6:08) and Michelle Filippi
(6:38) and finally first and
third in the shot put as Nikki
Lunt was tops at 29-2, followed
by Melanie Folk at 23-
11.
Rounding out the points for
the Wildcats included
Catrina Fryer with a second
in the 55-meter dash at 7.65
seconds.
Over the weekend,
Wilmington sent eight girls
to the Holiday Qualifier
Meet held at the Reggie
Lewis Center. No scores
were kept, but several members
of the team put forth
strong efforts. Alatalo ran a
personal best in the 600 coming
in at 1:49, while Maye
RandeU took a fifth place in
the 55-meter dash at 7.96 seconds
and also cleared 14-5 in
the long jump. Finally she
was a part of the sixth place
4x200 relay team along with
Jess Maienza, Heather
Kealos and Hannah Kelly,
wiio had a combined time of
1:57. Finally the 4x400 relay
team ran well behind Kate
Richardson, Rachel Alatalo,
Kerry Ryan and Maria
Patrone.
Both track teams will be
back in action next
Wednesday with a tri-meet
with Hamilton-Wenham and
Manchester-Essex.
Boys Hockey team extends
GVL streak to 20 games
Rv .TAMTF: POTK
Sports E^ditor
The Wilmington High
School Boys Varsity Hockey
team was extremely busy
this past week with three
games, including losing in
the chan^ionship game of
the annual Haverhill
Christmas Tbumament.
After defeating Cape Ann
League rival North Andover,
3-2 in the tournament opener,
the WUdcats feU to
Marblehead 4-3 in the championship
game for its first
loss of the season.
Then on Monday night,
WUmington edged
Masconomet 3-2 in a CAL
battle to in^)rove the team's
overall record to 4-1-1, and
inq)roving league record play
to 4-0-0, and extending the
team's record against league
foes to 20-0-0 dating back to
last season.
"We now have a challenge
ahead with Lynnfield and
then Newburyport next
week," said head coach Steve
Scanlon. "It's a challenge to
see if we can go back ahead
because it seems Uke we take
one step forward and then
one step backwards. We have
showed that we can do it and
once you do that, you can't
take it back. The fi-eshmen
have settled in and they have
showed that they can play at
this level. But we're still trying
to find ourselves - we still
need quite a bit (to keep it
going)."
If the team can play like it
did against Masco, certainly
the wins will keep coming.
"Masco by far was the best
we have played all season,"
said Scanlon. "They are a
very good team. They have U
seniors, they have good speed
and size and they are physical."
Freshman Brendan
McDonough continued his
scoring trend with his third
game winning goal of the
young season in the win over
the Chieftains. Just three
minutes into the third period
he scored to make it a 3-1
game, and that score
remained until Masco pulled
its goahe with over a minute
to play and netted a tally
making it a one-goal game.
But Wilmington was able to
hold off the late attack and
hand Masco its first loss of
the season.
"Brendan's gotten some big
goals for us," said Scanlon.
"Actually aU three freshmen
on that line have really been
much more composed than
you would expect from freshmen
and thQT have all done
some really good things on
the ice. Brendan's the bigger
one of the three, he has a
good shot and he has a knack
for the net, and he's been a
good addition to the team
just Uke the other two guys
have been. They have all
given us a big Mt which is
something we really needed,
and he's done a real good job
scoring three game winners
for us already."
Cam Owens scored a shorthanded
goal earlier in the
game, and he also added an
assist, while defenseman
Brian Hurley scored the
team's other goal.
Aucoin made 22 saves in the
net to earn the victory.
"After they scored to make
it 3-2, we were able to starve
them off," said Scanlon.
"Aucoin played well in the
net. He only made 22 saves
but he made some real k^^
saves and a coiqjle of real
vital saves for us. That was a
big win for us because they
were unbeaten."
In the win against NA,
Wilmington jumped out to a
2-0 lead as Dalton Rolli
scored a pair of goals in a 96
second span, both set iq) by
Andy Owens, viiile, Brian
Hurley and Cam Owens also
added single helpers.
North Andover was able to
get back in the game scoring
two quick goals late in the
secoM period, and the game
was tied up at 2-2 after the
second period. But in the
third period, freshman
Brendan McDonough scored
the game winner on a nice
set up by Luke Fbley and
Cody McGowan giving the
Wildcats the victory.
Goalie Joe Aucoin made 17
saves as the Cats held a 29-19
shooting edge including 15-2
in the first period.
The next night, Wilmington
faced Marblehead in the
championship game and
trailed 3-0 at the five minute
mark of the third period
before putting a late charge
with two goals, the first coming
37 seconds after
Marblehead's third goal, and
the second coming two minutes
after that to make it a
one goal game. McGowan
and RoUi scored the two
goals.
Marblehead was" able to go
back up by two goals scoring
a short-handed goal with just
over four minutes to go in the
game, but again Wilmington
stormed back as Cam Owens
scored with 2:37 left in the
game making it 4-3.
Wilmington wasn't able to tie
the game up although it held
a 12-8 advantage in shots in
the third period.
"Marblehead is a pretty
good club," said Scanlon.
"They went to the (Division
3) EMass final last year and
they have some good size. We
weren't with them through
the first period. We were
reacting more towards what
they were doing instead of
playing. Then we went into
the second period and just
played dreadful and were
down 2-0 after the second."
Scanlon went on to say that
his team played terrific once
Marblehead made it 3-0, but
a Uttle too late.
"We had some chances near
the end including (Brian)
Pickett puttii^ a shot on that
hit the goalie's shoulder and
went out of play with seven
seconds left. That was a real
good bid. I think if we had
another ten minutes to play,
we would've won. You could
see that Marblehead was tiring."
Freshman Drew Foley
made 26 saves in his first varsity
start between the pipes.
"That was Drew's first start
and we went with him
because of the back-to-back
games and I thought he
played very well," said
Sc£mlon. "He couldn't have
done anything with the goals
(North Andover) scored."
Wildcats thrash Amesbury
Rv .TAMTF POTTr.
Sports Editor
When you have a 40-point
lead with four minutes to go
in the third quarter, there's
really nothing the hometown
fans can celebrate about. But
with 5:22 left in Tuesday
night's contest a huge uproar
came after senior Mike Arria
- a role player - scored his
first of two baskets on the
night, giving the crowd at the
Larry Gushing Memorial
Gymnasium something to
smile about after seeing
Wilmington completely
destroy Amesbury, 72-42 in a
Cape Ann League Boys
Basketball game.
Arria and many of his
teammates, who are reserve
players, all made the trip to
the parquet floor with 3:49
left in the third quarter with
Wihnir^on holding a 66-26
lead, which included seeing
22 first half points by junior
Vin Scifo, a week after he
scored two while nursing a
sore ankle when the Wildcats
captxired their second
straight Christmas
Tbumament Title. Scifo didn't
even score a bucket in the
third quarter, when
Wilmington's starters closed
out a 13-0 run including three
treys, two from Chris
Frissore and the other from
Nick Godzyk.
Godzyk was another offensive
star in this game as he
had a boatload of assists,
especially in the first half as
Wilmington built leads of 27-
17 after the first quarter and
51-24 at halftime.
Scifo led the way with his 22
points, wMe, Frissore and
Godyzk were also in double
figures with 12 and U points
respectively. Tim McCarthy
added eight and Cole Peffer
chipped in with seven and
those five guys combined to
drain eight from beyond the
arc. Kyle Albanese had a nice
game on the boards finishing
withU.
