101 Sunday School room had been built and paid for by these young people. Not only did they complete that project, but they also paid $35toward repairs on the parsonage. Reverend Larkin said, "The Epworth League has been a great source of encouragement and help to the pastor and church. We have a fine company of young people filled with a spirit of loyal service. Our League in the Williamston church would do credit to churches of much larger membership than ours. For the size of the church, I believe Williamston has one of the best Leagues in the Conference. This group is the brightest spot of the church life and I hope that some of the older people of the church might catch some of their spirit!" After Reverend Larkin left Williamston, Reverend Chambers took up his work with the youth of the church, and his notes show how much this group of young people meant to him as well. He said, "The Epworth League at Williamston is doing especially good work. The weeks of prayer have been observed since the last Quarterly Conference and they have held services at sunrise each Sunday morning. The young people under the splendid leadership of Mr. B. B. Carstarphen, President, and Miss Josephine Sykes, Superintendent of the first department are taking much interest in the devotional services and are beginning to look upon the League as a means of grace, and not merely a social function of the church." Reverend Chambers was here for only one year, and he was followed by Reverend E. D. Dodd. It was during his pastorate at the church that this group of young people undertook quite a large project, assuming half the support of an orphan child. Reverend Dodd wrote in his Conference notes, "We have one of the finest Epworth Leagues I have ever worked with. They are functioning now as a 100percent League! " In 1925,Reverend Lee reported that the League was doing fine work, growing both in spirit and enthusiasm. In 1937, Reverend Maxwell reported that the League had organized a choir for
102 evening vesper services. By 1942, there was a union of three Methodist bodies into one and they were now called the Methodist Youth Fellowship, or MYF, a name that it has retained since that time. In 1959, while Reverend Mooney was pastor here, the youth group undertook a project that would have long-lasting benefit for the church and community. They constructed a life-size nativity scene to put in front of the church at Christmas time. It has been used every year since that time and only this year did the current MYF members have to replace the figures. This nativity scene was presented to the church as a gift from the young people. The young people of our church have played a vital role in church activities, and they truly are, as in the words of Reverend Larkin, "The brightest spot of the church life!
