<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Holy</strong> <strong>Land</strong>'<br />

Introduction<br />

<strong>The</strong> cultivated date (Phoenix dactylifera<br />

L.) has existed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Holy</strong> <strong>Land</strong> at least<br />

s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> Neolithic Age (6000-4000 B.C.),<br />

perhaps even before, when ancient man first<br />

took to sedentarv life <strong>in</strong> Jericho, all along<br />

<strong>the</strong> banks <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Jordan and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> neighbourhood<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dead Sea.<br />

Because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir superior fruit, date<br />

palms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Jordan Valley were famous<br />

<strong>through</strong>out <strong>the</strong> length and breadth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

countries <strong>of</strong> this palm. <strong>The</strong>re were palms<br />

along <strong>the</strong> coast as well, less important <strong>in</strong><br />

that respect but tremendously impressive <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir tower<strong>in</strong>g grandeur.3 <strong>The</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn littoral<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Holy</strong> <strong>Land</strong> was known as Phoenicia,<br />

and it may be that we have here <strong>the</strong><br />

orig<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> early name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> date <strong>in</strong><br />

Greek, 'phoenix.' Pl<strong>in</strong>y, <strong>in</strong> his Natural <strong>History</strong><br />

(XIII, IX, 42), <strong>the</strong>orizes that 'phoenix'<br />

comes from <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> a fabled bird <strong>of</strong><br />

Egypt-accord<strong>in</strong>g to Herodotus, it is a bird<br />

<strong>of</strong> Arabia, but, accord<strong>in</strong>g to Philostratus, a<br />

bird <strong>of</strong> India. <strong>The</strong> legendary phoenix cremated<br />

itself, yet lived on, or a second one<br />

arose from its ashes: exactly as a palm goes<br />

on grow<strong>in</strong>g after it is scorched on <strong>the</strong><br />

outside or puts forth shoots at its base,<br />

perpetuat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> date culture. <strong>The</strong> date palm<br />

is, <strong>in</strong>deed, regarded as a symbol <strong>of</strong> immortality,<br />

but it is a matter <strong>of</strong> speculation whe<strong>the</strong>r<br />

<strong>the</strong> bird was named for <strong>the</strong> tree or <strong>the</strong> tree<br />

for <strong>the</strong> bird. At all events, for <strong>the</strong> ancient<br />

Greeks and Romans, this nor<strong>the</strong>rn stretch <strong>of</strong><br />

Palest<strong>in</strong>e was <strong>the</strong> '<strong>Land</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Date</strong>,' Phoenicia.<br />

Orig<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>The</strong> source <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cultivated date is still<br />

unknown: some say nor<strong>the</strong>ast Afriea; o<strong>the</strong>rs<br />

say Asia-<strong>in</strong> Iraq4 and India, with its centre<br />

on <strong>the</strong> Persian Gulf; o<strong>the</strong>rs, aga<strong>in</strong>, <strong>the</strong><br />

Arabian Pen<strong>in</strong>sula. Vavilov writes : "<strong>The</strong><br />

orig<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> date is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong>s <strong>of</strong><br />

nor<strong>the</strong>ast Africa, Ethiopia and Eritrea,"<br />

whence it crossed to Egypt, North Africa,<br />

Israel and <strong>the</strong> countries more particularly<br />

identified with it-Yemen, Iraq, Nor<strong>the</strong>rn<br />

India. Post gave an area from "North Africa<br />

<strong>through</strong> <strong>the</strong> Arabian Pen<strong>in</strong>sula to<br />

nor<strong>the</strong>rn India." Serranus, Olivier de Marseille<br />

and Johannes Eurenius, botanists <strong>of</strong><br />

no less authority, ascribed <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong> to<br />

Israel.5<br />

A dist<strong>in</strong>guished Jewish botanist, Warburg,<br />

<strong>in</strong> his <strong>The</strong> Scientific Work <strong>of</strong> Aaron<br />

Aaronsohn (1944), considers that <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong><br />

was along <strong>the</strong> banks <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Jordan and <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> proximity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dead Sea, as <strong>the</strong> wild<br />

date is a denizen <strong>of</strong> rock-crevices and hillsides<br />

<strong>in</strong> that region.<br />

Ancient Hebrew literature refers to <strong>the</strong><br />

wild palm, with its short leaves. <strong>The</strong> Mishna<br />

(Sukkah, 3, 1) speaks <strong>of</strong> wild palms near<br />

<strong>the</strong> Mount <strong>of</strong> Iron,6 not far from <strong>the</strong> Dead<br />

Sea and north <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Arnon, and authorizes<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir branches as ritually acceptable for<br />

thatch<strong>in</strong>g booths at <strong>the</strong> Feast <strong>of</strong> Tabernacles.<br />

But it is very probable that <strong>the</strong> wild<br />

palms <strong>in</strong> question were trees that had escaped<br />

or were perhaps truly wild, all <strong>the</strong><br />

way from India to West Africa.<br />

Nor is <strong>the</strong>re unanimity as to <strong>the</strong> forebears<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> date as we know it. One view suggests<br />

Phoenix sylvestris,7 a wild date <strong>of</strong> great age<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Persian Gulf and as far<br />

as India; Phoenix recl<strong>in</strong>ata, from Africa,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> prickly variety, Phoenix sp<strong>in</strong>osa, are<br />

also claimants.<br />

For thousands <strong>of</strong> years <strong>the</strong> palm and its<br />

date were highly valued by <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>habitants<br />

from India <strong>through</strong> North Africa to <strong>the</strong><br />

Atlantic Ocean; it was a sweet fruit and,<br />

fresh or dried, fed <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> all seasons, a part<br />

from <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>it <strong>of</strong> countless uses <strong>of</strong> palm<br />

leaves and wood. No wonder <strong>the</strong> palm was<br />

holy. To <strong>the</strong> early Egyptians, it symbolizes<br />

life,8 for did it not put out a new leaf month<br />

after month, wlhe<strong>in</strong>ever ano<strong>the</strong>r grew old and<br />

wi<strong>the</strong>red! So <strong>the</strong>y immortalized it <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

temples, on columns, <strong>in</strong> murals.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> Middle East, it was a symbol <strong>of</strong><br />

fertility: Osiris is decked out <strong>in</strong> palm leaves<br />

and palm branches axe <strong>in</strong> his hand; Ishtar,<br />

goddess <strong>of</strong> Mo<strong>the</strong>r-Earth and <strong>of</strong> love, and<br />

her Tyrian namesake, Astarte, div<strong>in</strong>ity <strong>of</strong><br />

lust and fruitfulness, are similarly portrayed.<br />

For <strong>the</strong> Jews, too, <strong>the</strong> date was a token <strong>of</strong><br />

sanctity: at <strong>the</strong> Feast <strong>of</strong> Tabernacles, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

would say a bless<strong>in</strong>g over it and decorate <strong>the</strong><br />

booths with palm leaves: "And ye shall take<br />

vou on <strong>the</strong> first day . . . branches <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> palm<br />

trees . . . and ye shall rejoice before <strong>the</strong> Lord<br />

your God seven days " (Leviticus, 23, 40);<br />

". . . that <strong>the</strong> Children <strong>of</strong> Israel shall dwell<br />

<strong>in</strong> booths . . . and that <strong>the</strong>y should publish<br />

and proclaim <strong>in</strong> all <strong>the</strong>ir cities and <strong>in</strong><br />

Jerusalem, say<strong>in</strong>g: Go forth unto <strong>the</strong><br />

Mount, and fetch ... palm branches . .. to<br />

make booths...." (Nehemiah, 8, 14-15). To<br />

this very day, dur<strong>in</strong>g that Feast, Jews bless<br />

<strong>the</strong> four "species"-citron, palm, myrtle and<br />

willow-which <strong>the</strong> Bible (Leviticus, 23, 40)<br />

describes, and <strong>the</strong> modern booth, on many a<br />

balcony, is decorated with palm leaves, just<br />

as its prototype was 30 centuries ago. A<br />

Midrash, Tanhuma Emor, suggests that<br />

<strong>the</strong> palm was chosen for its likeness to man's<br />

sp<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>the</strong> myrtle for its likeness to <strong>the</strong><br />

human eye, <strong>the</strong> willow as resembl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

mouth and <strong>the</strong> citron as be<strong>in</strong>g heart-shaped.<br />

Palm leaves stood for peace and harmony,<br />

and any important or sacred build<strong>in</strong>g would<br />

be wrea<strong>the</strong>d <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>m: "And he carved all <strong>the</strong><br />

walls <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> house round about with carved<br />

figures <strong>of</strong> cherubims and palm trees and<br />

open flowers" (I K<strong>in</strong>gs, 6, 29); "And <strong>the</strong><br />

greater house he ceiled with fir trees which<br />

he overlaid with f<strong>in</strong>e gold and set <strong>the</strong>reon<br />

palm trees and cha<strong>in</strong>s" (II Chronicles, 3, 5).<br />

And <strong>the</strong>n, to mark military success, as we<br />

f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong> I Maccabees, 13, 53: "And <strong>the</strong>y came<br />

with song and palm leaves, with harps and<br />

zi<strong>the</strong>rs and praised God, That had redeemed<br />

<strong>the</strong>m from <strong>the</strong> hands <strong>of</strong> a hateful adversary."<br />

In II Maccabees, 10, 10: "And <strong>the</strong>y<br />

took river willows and palm leaves and sang<br />

a song <strong>of</strong> praise and thanksgiv<strong>in</strong>g to God<br />

That had given <strong>the</strong>m strength and salvation<br />

for <strong>the</strong> cleans<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Temple;" and, also,<br />

<strong>in</strong> II Maccabees, 14, 6: "and <strong>the</strong> Levites<br />

brought a gift, one crown <strong>of</strong> gold and palm<br />

leaves and olive branches with which <strong>the</strong>y<br />

would serve <strong>in</strong> holy ritual."<br />

Christians, too, began to adorn <strong>the</strong>ir churches<br />

with palm branches <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first centuries<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Christian Era, as an emblem <strong>of</strong><br />

righteousness, love and good harvests; and<br />

on feast days <strong>the</strong>y bore palm leaves <strong>in</strong>to<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir shr<strong>in</strong>es. In <strong>the</strong> Gospels, <strong>the</strong> undercurrent<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> symbolism is triumph: ". . peo-<br />

ple that were come to <strong>the</strong> feast, when <strong>the</strong>y<br />

heard that Jesus was com<strong>in</strong>g to Jerusalem<br />

. . . And <strong>the</strong>y took branches <strong>of</strong> palm trees<br />

and went forth to greet Him and <strong>the</strong>y cried,<br />

Hosanna, Blessed is <strong>the</strong> K<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> Israel that<br />

cometh <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lord" (John, 12,<br />

13); ". . . <strong>the</strong> people clo<strong>the</strong>d <strong>in</strong> white robes<br />

and palm leaves <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir hands" (Revelation,<br />

7, 9).<br />

Moslems sanctified <strong>the</strong> palm no less. Mohammed<br />

declared it a holy tree: devout<br />

believers must not uproot that whereon <strong>the</strong>y<br />

subsisted, <strong>in</strong> whose shade <strong>the</strong>y dwelt, whose<br />

leaves and wood <strong>the</strong>y turned to such good<br />

uses <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir daily lives. <strong>The</strong> Arabs, <strong>in</strong> whose<br />

lands most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world's date palms once<br />

grew and, <strong>in</strong>deed, still grow, have many tales<br />

<strong>of</strong> its importance to man. In one, <strong>the</strong>se<br />

words, which became legendary, are attributed<br />

to Mohammed: "Honour <strong>the</strong> date<br />

palm, for it is <strong>the</strong> bro<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> your fa<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

It is taken from <strong>the</strong> earth that rema<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

after Man was created. <strong>The</strong> date palm resembles<br />

Man: it is tall and upright, it is<br />

male and female. He that cuts <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> date palm, shall die; he that wounds its<br />

heart, shall himself wi<strong>the</strong>r. If its <strong>of</strong>fshoots<br />

are cut away, no o<strong>the</strong>rs will come forth <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir place. So, too, <strong>the</strong> hands <strong>of</strong> a man do<br />

not grow aga<strong>in</strong> if <strong>the</strong>y are cut <strong>of</strong>f. <strong>The</strong> date<br />

palm is covered with fibres like human hair.<br />

Is not Man <strong>the</strong>n just like <strong>the</strong> date palm?"<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r tale runs: "<strong>The</strong> first man cut his<br />

hair and clipped his nails and hid <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> soil <strong>of</strong> Paradise. At once, <strong>in</strong> that place,<br />

<strong>the</strong>re sprouted and grew a date palm, it<br />

flourished and bore fruit. <strong>The</strong> man fell upon<br />

his face <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> greatness <strong>of</strong> his wonderment.<br />

<strong>The</strong> angel Gabriel appeared to him and<br />

po<strong>in</strong>ted with his f<strong>in</strong>ger at <strong>the</strong> date palm and<br />

said to <strong>the</strong> man-This tree was created from<br />

<strong>the</strong> same matter whence thou wast created,<br />

and it will susta<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>e."<br />

Besides <strong>the</strong> ritual and ceremonial services<br />

that <strong>the</strong> palm rendered to all creeds and <strong>the</strong><br />

divert<strong>in</strong>g folklore that it <strong>in</strong>spired, its fruit<br />

nourished man and beast and made a honey<br />

<strong>of</strong> its own; from its trunk a pleasant juice<br />

was extracted, ei<strong>the</strong>r harmlessly sweet or<br />

headily fermented; its leaflets and fronds<br />

were woven <strong>in</strong>to sleep<strong>in</strong>g mats, donkeypanniers,<br />

plant<strong>in</strong>g-pots, baskets and brooms,<br />

sandals and fans. Its wood was carpentered<br />

<strong>in</strong>to ro<strong>of</strong>s or fences or even river craft; its<br />

eaves and trunks fed ancient, but never<br />

ritual, fires; its fibrous sheath was plaited<br />

<strong>in</strong>to ropes, pillows and mattresses.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Biblical Period<br />

<strong>Date</strong> palms, we saw, were very common <strong>in</strong><br />

Egypt and on <strong>the</strong> borders <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Holy</strong> <strong>Land</strong>.<br />

<strong>The</strong>ir first ascription to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Holy</strong> <strong>Land</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> ancient Egyptian literature is <strong>in</strong> Papyrus<br />

Anastasi IV, 12, 5, and Anastasi V,<br />

written dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> reign <strong>of</strong> Rameses II<br />

(1298-1235 B.C.). <strong>The</strong> story is <strong>of</strong> an Egyptian<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficer assigned to Palest<strong>in</strong>e. He describes<br />

his life at a lonely frontier post:<br />

"Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> day, I sit and gaze as if I were<br />

hunt<strong>in</strong>g birds. My eye stra<strong>in</strong>s at <strong>the</strong> roads<br />

that lead to Palest<strong>in</strong>e. At night, I sit beneath<br />

trees that bear no fruits for <strong>the</strong> eat<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Where are <strong>the</strong> dates? <strong>The</strong>y have none, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

do not bear any...."<br />

About this time, <strong>the</strong> Hebrews, led by<br />

Moses, departed from Egypt on <strong>the</strong>ir way to<br />

Canaan. It is now that <strong>the</strong> first Hebraic<br />

mention <strong>of</strong> dates occurs, for <strong>the</strong> Jews rediscovered<br />

<strong>in</strong> Canaan a fruit with which <strong>the</strong>y<br />

had become familiar <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nile country. In<br />

<strong>the</strong> Wilderness <strong>of</strong> S<strong>in</strong>ai, <strong>the</strong>y had seen <strong>the</strong><br />

trees at spr<strong>in</strong>gs where <strong>the</strong>y camped. Of <strong>the</strong><br />

date it is said: "its roots are <strong>in</strong> water and its<br />

crest <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sun," a poetical allusion to <strong>the</strong><br />

moisture it requires to develop and <strong>the</strong> heat<br />

for its ripen<strong>in</strong>g. <strong>The</strong> oases <strong>of</strong> S<strong>in</strong>ai<br />

presented <strong>the</strong> conditions which equally fostered<br />

cultivation <strong>in</strong> Egypt, Mesopotamia and<br />

<strong>the</strong> Jordan Rift. So, Exodus, 15, 27: "And<br />

<strong>the</strong>y came to Elim, where were twelve wells<br />

<strong>of</strong> water, and three-score and ten palm<br />

trees";9 and Deuteronomy, 34, 3, <strong>of</strong> Moses'<br />

distant sight <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Promised <strong>Land</strong> from<br />

Pisgah: "and <strong>the</strong> pla<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Valley <strong>of</strong><br />

Jericho, <strong>the</strong> city <strong>of</strong> palm trees, unto Zoar."<br />

<strong>The</strong>re is little doubt that <strong>the</strong> cultivated<br />

palm grew <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Holy</strong> <strong>Land</strong> earlier than<br />

that: witness <strong>the</strong> date-stones discovered <strong>in</strong><br />

many excavations especially <strong>in</strong> and around<br />

Jericho, <strong>in</strong> strata <strong>of</strong> 1600 B.C. and before<br />

(John Garstang, <strong>The</strong> Story <strong>of</strong> Jericho, Plate<br />

XIX).<br />

Although <strong>the</strong>re must have been many palm<br />

trees <strong>in</strong> ancient Egypt, yet <strong>the</strong> Egyptians<br />

were keenly <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> 'Palest<strong>in</strong>e' varieties:<br />

most native varieties were s<strong>of</strong>t; <strong>the</strong><br />

Jordan k<strong>in</strong>d were semi-dry. A wall pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> Karnak (1500 B.C.) illustrates flora<br />

brought back by a conquer<strong>in</strong>g Pharaoh. <strong>The</strong><br />

palm is one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m, and we may <strong>in</strong>fer that<br />

Thutmosis III took <strong>the</strong> opportunity to <strong>in</strong>troduce<br />

certa<strong>in</strong> cultivated varieties as yet unknown<br />

<strong>in</strong> Egypt.<br />

Place names suggestive <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> date were<br />

anciently popular'0-". . . and also <strong>the</strong><br />

Amorites that dwell <strong>in</strong> Hazezon-tamar"<br />

(Genesis, 14, 7). <strong>The</strong> mean<strong>in</strong>g seems to be a<br />

place where many clusters <strong>of</strong> dates were cut<br />

and ga<strong>the</strong>red from <strong>the</strong> palm trees. (In II<br />

Chronicles, 20, 2, we f<strong>in</strong>d Hazezon-tamar<br />

identified with E<strong>in</strong>-Gedi.) Jericho and adjacent<br />

Zoar were dignified as "cities <strong>of</strong><br />

dates" (Jericho <strong>in</strong> Deuteronomy, and also <strong>in</strong><br />

II Chronicles, 28, 15; Zoar <strong>in</strong> Mishna Yabamot,<br />

16, 7.) Ezekiel (47, 19) mentions a<br />

"Tamar" <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Negev, and aga<strong>in</strong>, <strong>in</strong> Judges,<br />

20, 33, we f<strong>in</strong>d a "Baal-tamar," a date-palm<br />

sanctuary: "<strong>The</strong> <strong>Land</strong> <strong>of</strong> Israel is a Garden<br />

<strong>of</strong> Eden on earth, and Beth She'an (which<br />

was, and still is, rich <strong>in</strong> dates) is <strong>the</strong> gateway<br />

to Paradise." This extract from <strong>the</strong> Babylonian<br />

Talmud shows how important dates<br />

were <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region. Tamar was a name much<br />

given to women, <strong>in</strong> a very proper usage <strong>of</strong> its<br />

gracious and upright form (Genesis, 38, 6;<br />

II Samuel, 13, 1, <strong>of</strong> David's fair sister),<br />

and it is still a popular name <strong>in</strong> Israel.<br />

Deuteronomy (8, 8) tells <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> goodness<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Holy</strong> <strong>Land</strong>, its gra<strong>in</strong>s and fruits and<br />

honey; this refers to <strong>the</strong> honey <strong>of</strong> dates and<br />

not <strong>of</strong> bees: <strong>the</strong> Jerusalem Talmud<br />

(Bikkurim, Chapter 1, Mishna 3) says "honey<br />

that is dates," and Sifri (Chapter Tavo,<br />

60) also states this explicitly.<br />

That <strong>the</strong> Hebrews regarded <strong>the</strong> palm unreservedly<br />

as a status symbol <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

righteous, honourable and beautiful is seen<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Songs <strong>of</strong> Songs (7, 7, F): "This thy<br />

stature is like to a palm tree"; and <strong>in</strong><br />

Jeremiah (10, 5): "<strong>The</strong>y (<strong>the</strong> idols) are<br />

Joel (1, 11-12) lashes out at <strong>the</strong> slothful<br />

farmer: "Be ye ashamed, 0 ye husbandmen<br />

... Because <strong>the</strong> harvest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> field is perished<br />

. . . <strong>the</strong> palm tree also . . . even all <strong>the</strong> trees<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> field are wi<strong>the</strong>red." His group<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> date <strong>in</strong> this passage with wheat and<br />

barley, v<strong>in</strong>e and olive, fig and pomegranate,<br />

aga<strong>in</strong> affirms <strong>the</strong> importance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> date to<br />

<strong>the</strong> Israelites.<br />

Greece, Rome and Byzantium<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Holy</strong> <strong>Land</strong><br />

It was natural for Greek and Roimian<br />

conquerors to praise <strong>the</strong> dates that <strong>the</strong>y<br />

found <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Holy</strong> <strong>Land</strong>, for no date-pallmis<br />

grew <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir own countries, and <strong>the</strong> Israelitish<br />

fruit was <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>est <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Middle East.<br />

Judaea was renowned for its dates, and <strong>the</strong><br />

dist<strong>in</strong>ction was handsomely perpetuated <strong>in</strong><br />

numismatic designs. Herodotus (484-425<br />

B.C.) has much to say (Book II, Chap. 6,<br />

paragraph 2): "In Syria (which, <strong>in</strong> this<br />

context, means <strong>the</strong> <strong>Land</strong> <strong>of</strong> Israel) where<br />

most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dates are, it is claimed that <strong>the</strong>y<br />

only grow <strong>in</strong> three areas, two <strong>of</strong> which are<br />

<strong>of</strong> salty soil and <strong>the</strong> fruit is good for stor<strong>in</strong>g<br />

(Beit She'an, <strong>the</strong> Jordan Valley, Jericho and<br />

<strong>the</strong> environs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dead Sea). But <strong>the</strong> dates<br />

that grow <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r parts (Gaza and <strong>the</strong><br />

coast) do not keep well and <strong>the</strong>y rot, be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

s<strong>of</strong>t, although <strong>the</strong>y are sweet and can be<br />

eaten fresh."<br />

<strong>The</strong> superiority <strong>of</strong> storage-quality and <strong>the</strong><br />

dist<strong>in</strong>ction between semi-dry and s<strong>of</strong>t dates<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> zones <strong>in</strong>dicated are still true today.<br />

Hippocrates (460-360 B.C.) esteemed <strong>the</strong><br />

Judaean dates highly as medic<strong>in</strong>e; <strong>The</strong>ophrastus<br />

(370-285 B.C.), <strong>in</strong> his Research<br />

<strong>in</strong>to Plants (Part II, Chapter 6, paragraphs<br />

2, 5, 7 and 8), writes enthusiastically:<br />

"Wherever date-palms grow abundantly, <strong>the</strong><br />

soil is salt, both <strong>in</strong> Babylon, <strong>the</strong>y say, where<br />

<strong>the</strong> tree is <strong>in</strong>digenous, <strong>in</strong> Libya, <strong>in</strong> Egypt<br />

and <strong>in</strong> Phoenicia. While <strong>in</strong> Coele-Syria<br />

(Palest<strong>in</strong>e-Jordan Valley) where are most<br />

palms, only <strong>in</strong> three distriets, <strong>the</strong>y say,<br />

where <strong>the</strong> soil is salt, are dates produced<br />

which can be stored; those that grow <strong>in</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r districts do not keep but rot, though<br />

when fresh <strong>the</strong>y are sweet and men use <strong>the</strong>m<br />

say that <strong>the</strong> people <strong>of</strong> Syria (viz. Palest<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>of</strong>fer sacrifices and thank<strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>gs to God,<br />

<strong>the</strong> only part <strong>of</strong> 'Syria' that can produce carry<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir hand a branch <strong>of</strong> myrtle<br />

good dates) use no cultivation, except cut- and willow and bough <strong>of</strong> palm leaves with a<br />

t<strong>in</strong>g out wood and water<strong>in</strong>g, also that <strong>the</strong> citron besides" (ibid., III, X, 4); "Moses<br />

date-palm requires spr<strong>in</strong>g-water ra<strong>the</strong>r than pitched his camp after his troops had gone<br />

ra<strong>in</strong>-water; and that water is abundant <strong>in</strong> down to <strong>the</strong> Jordan <strong>in</strong> a great pla<strong>in</strong> fac<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> (Jordan) Valley <strong>in</strong> which are <strong>the</strong> palm- Jericho, a city blessed and fruitful for <strong>the</strong><br />

groves. And <strong>the</strong>y add that <strong>the</strong> Syrians say growth <strong>of</strong> palm-trees and rich <strong>in</strong> balsam"<br />

that this valley extends <strong>through</strong> Arabia to (ibid., IV, VI, 1). <strong>The</strong>re is an almost<br />

<strong>the</strong> Red Sea and that many pr<strong>of</strong>ess to have parallel passage <strong>in</strong> IX, 1, 2: "And <strong>the</strong>y<br />

visited it and that it is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> lowest part <strong>of</strong> pitched <strong>the</strong>ir camp at E<strong>in</strong>-Gedi, situated on<br />

it that <strong>the</strong> date-palms grow (that is, around <strong>the</strong> shore <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lacus Asphaltitis . . . where<br />

<strong>the</strong> Dead Sea). . . . Aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> Syria and <strong>the</strong> best date-palms grow"; "And Solomon<br />

Egypt <strong>the</strong>re are palms which bear when <strong>the</strong>y commissioned from Tyre from <strong>the</strong> skilled<br />

are four or five years old, at which age <strong>the</strong>y Hiram . . . pillars about which <strong>the</strong>re was<br />

are <strong>the</strong> height <strong>of</strong> a man.... <strong>The</strong> only dates filigree <strong>in</strong>terwoven with small palms <strong>of</strong> brass<br />

that will keep, <strong>the</strong>y say, are those which . . . engrav<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> palm trees with<strong>in</strong> a<br />

graphs 2-3, <strong>the</strong>re is shrewd commentary on<br />

Plutarch (46-120 A.D.) says that Mark <strong>the</strong> ways and need <strong>of</strong> cultivation, varieties<br />

Anthony gave Cleopatra <strong>the</strong> date district <strong>of</strong> and date honey: "Those plantations <strong>of</strong> palm<br />

Jericho as a gift and that Augustus enjoyed trees that are near its banks are more floura<br />

Judaean date called "nicolvis<strong>in</strong>." <strong>The</strong> He- ish<strong>in</strong>g and much more fruitful, whereas<br />

brew scholar and poet Ben Sira (about 200 those that are remote from it are not so<br />

B.C.) (Chapter 24, 15) anticipates <strong>the</strong>se flourish<strong>in</strong>g and fruitful.... <strong>The</strong>re are <strong>in</strong> it<br />

Roman panegyries: "I was exalted as a palm many sorts <strong>of</strong> date-trees that are watered by<br />

tree on <strong>the</strong> river (<strong>the</strong> Jordan)." And, as we it, different from each o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> taste and<br />

should expect, Josephus (37-85 A.D.) gives name; <strong>the</strong> better k<strong>in</strong>ds, when pressed, yield<br />

biblical references and precedents for <strong>the</strong> an excellent honey not much <strong>in</strong>ferior <strong>in</strong><br />

importance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> date <strong>in</strong> Israelitish history, sweetness to o<strong>the</strong>r honey . . . so that he who<br />

and m<strong>in</strong>ute descriptions <strong>of</strong> Jericho and <strong>the</strong> should pronounce this place, where<strong>in</strong> are<br />

Dead Sea: "Here (<strong>in</strong> Jericho) is <strong>the</strong> richest plenty <strong>of</strong> palms very rare and <strong>of</strong> most<br />

region <strong>of</strong> Judaea <strong>in</strong> which are grown many excellent sorts, to be div<strong>in</strong>e would not be<br />

date palms <strong>of</strong> excellent iquality" (Antiqui- mistaken." In Book III X, 8, occurs <strong>the</strong><br />

ties, Book XV, Chapter IV, paragraph 2); disquisition on <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>of</strong> cold and heat<br />

"Moses bade <strong>the</strong>m build booths for every <strong>in</strong> horticulture. It ends with <strong>the</strong> counsel<br />

family, and <strong>the</strong>y celebrate <strong>the</strong> Feast <strong>of</strong> Tab- (speak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> Gennesareth and its nature, its<br />

'well mixed' temperatures): "<strong>the</strong>re are palm<br />

trees which are nourished well by <strong>the</strong><br />

warmth <strong>of</strong> '<strong>the</strong> sun."<br />

<strong>The</strong>n <strong>the</strong> logistical Josephus adds, <strong>in</strong> Book<br />

VII, VIII, 4, concern<strong>in</strong>g Masada, that <strong>the</strong><br />

Jews used to keep emergency rations <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

fortresses, and dates were stored for lengthy<br />

periods and were most nutritious: remarkable<br />

were <strong>the</strong> great quantities <strong>of</strong> foodstuffs<br />

stockpiled <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> strongholds and stored for<br />

many a day: "wheat <strong>in</strong> plenty was laid up,<br />

ample for <strong>the</strong> needs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> beleaguered for a<br />

long time, and w<strong>in</strong>e and oil <strong>in</strong> abundance, as<br />

well, all sorts <strong>of</strong> pulses and dates heaped up<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r."12<br />

Hebrew exegesis written between <strong>the</strong> Sec-<br />

12 tonfirm<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> account <strong>of</strong> Josephus, datestones<br />

were found <strong>in</strong> Masada and <strong>the</strong> eaves<br />

<strong>of</strong> E<strong>in</strong>-Gedi <strong>in</strong> that area (Yad<strong>in</strong> Expedition,<br />

1963).<br />

ond Century B.C. and <strong>the</strong> Fourth Century<br />

A.D. confirms <strong>the</strong> date's significance <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Holy</strong> <strong>Land</strong> and Babylon, Persia and Egypt.<br />

We see that <strong>the</strong> Jordan Valley and <strong>the</strong> Dead<br />

Sea region, with <strong>the</strong>ir unchang<strong>in</strong>g warmth,<br />

are still centres <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cultivation, so much<br />

so that Tosefta (Shevi'it 7, 11, and<br />

Jerusalem Talmud, Shevi'it, 9, 2) pronounces:<br />

"<strong>Date</strong> palms are <strong>the</strong> trademarks <strong>of</strong><br />

valleys," whereas <strong>the</strong> trees <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r places<br />

merely furnished leaves for this or that<br />

"<strong>in</strong>dustrial product." Hill-top palms were<br />

barren, and <strong>the</strong> sneer "You are a mounta<strong>in</strong><br />

palm," as <strong>the</strong> Midrash, Sifra, Tazria,' tells<br />

us, became a by-word for <strong>the</strong> man <strong>of</strong> little<br />

and pr<strong>of</strong>itless wisdom. <strong>The</strong> Mishna<br />

(Bikkurim 1, 3 and 10) makes it clear that<br />

mounta<strong>in</strong> dates might not be taken as firstfruits<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Temple, but only valley dates,<br />

which were acceptable for <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

prayer; Tosefta (Bikkurim, 1, 5) is specific:<br />

"<strong>The</strong> only dates brought as first-fruits are<br />

those from Jericho"; "No one prays except<br />

over (<strong>the</strong> superior variety called) kothbot."<br />

In <strong>the</strong> layers <strong>of</strong> first-fruits with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> traditional<br />

basket borne to <strong>the</strong> Temple, dates<br />

were uppermost (Tosefta, Bikkurim, 2, 8).<br />

<strong>Date</strong>s also were subject to peah (Mishna,<br />

Peah, 1, 5), but <strong>the</strong> Jerusalem Talmud<br />

(Mishna, Peah, Chapter 4, Halacha 1)<br />

gives a rul<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> Rabbi Yehuda: "S<strong>of</strong>t<br />

dates, which do not keep, are exempt from<br />

peah, for <strong>the</strong> first <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m tarried not for <strong>the</strong><br />

last (<strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r words, it is not feasible to<br />

harvest all at once, for <strong>the</strong>y do not ripen<br />

simultaneously), but whole bunches must<br />

pay it."<br />

Propagation. Propagation was ei<strong>the</strong>r by<br />

sow<strong>in</strong>g stones or plant<strong>in</strong>g shoots. It appears<br />

that <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Holy</strong> <strong>Land</strong>, at any rate <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Jordan Valley, most groves were planted<br />

from shoots, for it was soon realized that<br />

only thus could <strong>the</strong> perpetuation <strong>of</strong> desirable<br />

varieties be ensured. <strong>The</strong> trees were cultivated<br />

for a given length <strong>of</strong> time, and, on<br />

ag<strong>in</strong>g, were uprooted, s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>y now<br />

ceased to put out new suckers and <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

yields fell away. "<strong>The</strong> palm does not renew<br />

Varieties. Some varietie,s ripen later than<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs. Tosefta, Shevi'it, 7, 15, puts it well:<br />

"<strong>The</strong>y eat dates until <strong>the</strong> last one is f<strong>in</strong>ished<br />

<strong>in</strong> Zoar." <strong>The</strong> Babylonian Talmud, Baba<br />

Kama, 59a, <strong>in</strong> a few words: "<strong>The</strong> palm <strong>of</strong><br />

Aramaea and . . . <strong>of</strong> Persia," registers <strong>the</strong><br />

source <strong>of</strong> certa<strong>in</strong> foreign k<strong>in</strong>ds, and goes on<br />

to say that <strong>the</strong> Babylonian (Aramaean)<br />

dates were poor, used as fodder; but <strong>the</strong><br />

Persian, were good and were not fed to<br />

cattle (Babylonian Talmud, Shabbat, 143a).<br />

<strong>The</strong> Hebrews claimed that <strong>the</strong> stones <strong>of</strong><br />

Babylonian varieties were s<strong>of</strong>t, those <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Persian hard (Babylonian Talmud, Shabbat<br />

143a); <strong>the</strong>re is no such dist<strong>in</strong>ction today.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Babylonian Talmud, Shabbat 29a, notes<br />

also that <strong>the</strong> Persian dates had free stones,<br />

while <strong>the</strong> stones <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Babylonian clung to<br />

<strong>the</strong> flesh. In <strong>the</strong> same place, ilOb, we are told<br />

that <strong>the</strong> Persian dates had <strong>the</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>r merit<br />

<strong>of</strong> medic<strong>in</strong>al properties.<br />

In Bamidbar Raba, 3, 1, <strong>the</strong> Midrash<br />

enlarges on s<strong>of</strong>t dates, <strong>the</strong> "niclos<strong>in</strong>" (a<br />

semi-dry variety), and <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ferior k<strong>in</strong>d<br />

(that drops <strong>of</strong>f before it ripens) and <strong>the</strong> dry<br />

variety "sol<strong>in</strong>," with a characteristic addendum:<br />

"Thus, too, it is with Israel, some were<br />

learned, some unversed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> law, and boorish,<br />

and just as <strong>the</strong>re are s<strong>of</strong>t dates that<br />

cannot be stored and o<strong>the</strong>rs that bear fruit<br />

that can be kept safely, so was it with Israel<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> wilderness, some entered <strong>the</strong> <strong>Holy</strong><br />

<strong>Land</strong>, o<strong>the</strong>rs did not."<br />

<strong>The</strong> wild dates <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Holy</strong> <strong>Land</strong> must not<br />

be forgotten. <strong>The</strong>re is <strong>in</strong> Mishna, Sukkah, 3,<br />

1, mention <strong>of</strong> "z<strong>in</strong>i (palms) <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mount<br />

<strong>of</strong> Iron."<br />

<strong>The</strong> variety "nishani" (Babylonian Talmud,<br />

Erub<strong>in</strong> 28b) is said to be a male date<br />

which produces embryonic fruit but not<br />

mature dates; Rashi comments that male<br />

palms yield only this unfertilized fruit that<br />

develops no fur<strong>the</strong>r and never grows <strong>in</strong>to<br />

real dates. Rashi also refers to <strong>the</strong> "taali"<br />

(Babylonian Talmud, Shabbat, llOa, and<br />

Baba Bathra, 2gb) variety which grew both<br />

<strong>in</strong> Babylon and <strong>in</strong> Israel. Among <strong>the</strong> better<br />

varieties is 'ah<strong>in</strong>i," <strong>in</strong> name resembl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

important modern variety "hayani," extensively<br />

grown <strong>in</strong> Egypt and S<strong>in</strong>ai and described<br />

as a red date <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Babylonian<br />

Talmud, Sukkah, 35b and <strong>in</strong> Erub<strong>in</strong> 28b.<br />

<strong>The</strong> best varieties <strong>of</strong> Israel were <strong>the</strong> "tav,"<br />

which Mishna and Talmud declare may not,<br />

on account <strong>of</strong> "superf<strong>in</strong>e quality," be sold to<br />

idolaters; and <strong>the</strong> "hazzab" (or "1hassad"),<br />

also too good for hea<strong>the</strong>n buyers. So was <strong>the</strong><br />

"niclivas."<br />

<strong>The</strong> Mishna, Aboda Zara, 1, 5 and <strong>the</strong><br />

Babylonia Talmud, Aboda Zara, 13b, mention<br />

"niclivas," "nicolas," "nicola" and "nicolvas<strong>in</strong>"<br />

<strong>in</strong>differently, but always with appreciation:<br />

<strong>the</strong> Babylonian Talmud, Aboda<br />

Zara, 14a, is specific: "Rabbi -Dumi an-<br />

swered <strong>the</strong>m-When you go thi<strong>the</strong>r (to <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Land</strong> <strong>of</strong> Israel) and you say 'nicolas,' <strong>the</strong>y<br />

will not understand you, but if you say<br />

'euraiti'13 <strong>the</strong>y will and will show you that<br />

same variety." "Curaiti" is referred to also <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Jerusalem Talmud, Aboda Zara, Chapter<br />

1, Halacha 39, and <strong>in</strong> Berachot, Chapter 6,<br />

Halacha 5, that tells a story <strong>of</strong> Rabbi Han<strong>in</strong>a<br />

Bar-Sisi, who had gifts <strong>of</strong> "nicolvas<strong>in</strong>"<br />

from <strong>the</strong> President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sanhedr<strong>in</strong>, and<br />

would put <strong>the</strong>m aside until he had partaken<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> meal and said a bless<strong>in</strong>g over <strong>the</strong>m,<br />

first and last. Tosefta, Berahot, 4, 12, mentions<br />

"kothbot," which prompted Rabbi<br />

Akiva to make <strong>the</strong> apt benediction over a<br />

dish <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m brought to table. Some "kothbot,"<br />

we learn, were qualified as "nimrot,"<br />

seem<strong>in</strong>gly a place-name (Nimr<strong>in</strong>), but it<br />

may suggest "tigerish" dates <strong>of</strong> good quality,<br />

with black and white mark<strong>in</strong>gs. <strong>The</strong><br />

Midrash, Bereshit Raba at Chapter 5, alludes<br />

to an exchange <strong>of</strong> gifts <strong>of</strong> "doriot"<br />

(this may be <strong>the</strong> current variety "deree")<br />

for "kothbot." <strong>The</strong> Babylonian Talmud, Baba<br />

Bathra, 124a, records <strong>the</strong> variety "shalfufa,"<br />

<strong>of</strong> which <strong>the</strong> Akkadian name is "suluppu."<br />

Poll<strong>in</strong>ation. <strong>The</strong> Hebrews learned <strong>the</strong> value<br />

and art <strong>of</strong> date poll<strong>in</strong>ation from Egyptian<br />

and Babylonian experts. <strong>The</strong>y understood<br />

that <strong>the</strong>re were male and female palms<br />

and that <strong>the</strong>re could be no dates without<br />

fertilization. <strong>The</strong> ancient Egyptians thought<br />

that it was <strong>the</strong> male that fruited, <strong>the</strong> female<br />

provid<strong>in</strong>g only <strong>the</strong> pollen.14 <strong>The</strong> Babylonians<br />

discovered <strong>the</strong> truth: that fruit<strong>in</strong>g depended<br />

on fertiliz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> female with pollen<br />

from <strong>the</strong> male. This <strong>the</strong> Hebrews, <strong>the</strong>refore,<br />

knew, and were skilled <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> practice. "<strong>The</strong><br />

men <strong>of</strong> Jericho," says <strong>the</strong> Mishna (Pessahim,<br />

4, 8), "poll<strong>in</strong>ate <strong>the</strong> palms all day even<br />

on <strong>the</strong> Passover Eve"; and so also Tosefta,<br />

Pessahim, 2 (3), 19. A spikelet <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> male<br />

<strong>in</strong>florescence was taken and tied above a<br />

spa<strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong> female flowers. <strong>The</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d would<br />

carry <strong>the</strong> pollen from one to <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r, as is<br />

carefully and <strong>in</strong>telligently described <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Babylonian Talmud, Shabbat, 47a. But <strong>the</strong>re<br />

were also Hebrew date-growers who regarded<br />

poll<strong>in</strong>ation as an "Amorite mode," a form<br />

<strong>of</strong> magic, believ<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong> female palm was<br />

sick and that <strong>the</strong> device was its way <strong>of</strong><br />

implor<strong>in</strong>g pity for its barrenness, so that<br />

passers-by might pray <strong>in</strong> compassion, when<br />

it would <strong>the</strong>n bear fruit.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Babylonian Talmud, aga<strong>in</strong>, Pessahim<br />

56a, goes <strong>in</strong>to detail: "How is this poll<strong>in</strong>ation<br />

doneI . . . <strong>the</strong> grower br<strong>in</strong>gs a fresh<br />

myrtle branch and juice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> green fruits<br />

<strong>of</strong> laurel with barley flour mixed with datepollen<br />

that has not been more than forty<br />

days <strong>in</strong> store. All <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>gredients are mixed<br />

and boiled, and <strong>in</strong>jected <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> heart <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

(female) palm-spa<strong>the</strong>. Every (female) palm<br />

that is no fur<strong>the</strong>r away than four cubits is<br />

fertilized. In trees that are fur<strong>the</strong>r away, <strong>the</strong><br />

blossom dries up at once (for lack <strong>of</strong> poll<strong>in</strong>ation)."<br />

It adds that Rabbi Aha, son <strong>of</strong><br />

Raba, says: "a s<strong>of</strong>t <strong>in</strong>floreseence branch <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> male palm-spa<strong>the</strong> is <strong>in</strong>serted <strong>in</strong>to a<br />

fissure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> female palm."<br />

<strong>The</strong>ophrastus, Enquiry <strong>in</strong>to Plants, II,<br />

VIII, 4, and Herodotus, Persian Wars, I,<br />

193, agree: "<strong>The</strong> process is thus performed:<br />

when <strong>the</strong> pollen <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> male flower is ripe,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y at once cut <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> spa<strong>the</strong> on which <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>floreseence is, just as it is, and shake <strong>the</strong><br />

bloom and dust it over <strong>the</strong> female (flowers),<br />

and, if this is done to it, it reta<strong>in</strong>s <strong>the</strong> fruit<br />

and does not shed it" (<strong>The</strong>ophrastus). Hero-<br />

dotus says: "<strong>The</strong> natives tie <strong>the</strong> fruit<br />

(flower) <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> male palms, as <strong>the</strong>y are<br />

called by <strong>the</strong> Greeks, to <strong>the</strong> branches <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

date-bear<strong>in</strong>g palms (<strong>the</strong> females), to let <strong>the</strong><br />

gall-fly enter <strong>the</strong> dates and ripen <strong>the</strong>m and<br />

thus prevent <strong>the</strong> fruit from dropp<strong>in</strong>g. <strong>The</strong><br />

male palms, like <strong>the</strong> wild fig-trees, have<br />

usually gall-fly <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir fruit."<br />

Herodotus, who <strong>in</strong>cidentally mentions that<br />

<strong>the</strong> Babylonians used dates as a source <strong>of</strong><br />

bread, w<strong>in</strong>e and honey, is writ<strong>in</strong>g from his<br />

recollections <strong>of</strong> fig-caprifieation. Today, it is<br />

considered that poll<strong>in</strong>ation, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> date palm,<br />

is done by <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>d alone.<br />

Long after, L<strong>in</strong>naeus (1707-1778 A.D.)<br />

summarizes <strong>the</strong> problem: "<strong>The</strong>y take a sprig<br />

or two <strong>of</strong> male flower and <strong>in</strong>troduce it <strong>in</strong>to<br />

<strong>the</strong> sheath <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> female or else <strong>the</strong>y take a<br />

whole cluster <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> male and spr<strong>in</strong>kle its<br />

meal or far<strong>in</strong>a over several clusters <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

female."<br />

<strong>Date</strong>-growers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Holy</strong> <strong>Land</strong> knew that<br />

pollen <strong>of</strong> certa<strong>in</strong> male-palms was <strong>in</strong>compatible<br />

and <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs compatible; <strong>the</strong> latter were<br />

marked, and it was only <strong>the</strong>ir pollen that<br />

was used <strong>in</strong> poll<strong>in</strong>ation. "<strong>The</strong>re was a palm<br />

tree <strong>in</strong> Hamathan which bore no fruit. A<br />

skilled date-grower went by and saw it. This<br />

tree, he said, is yearn<strong>in</strong>g for pollen <strong>of</strong><br />

Jericho. When <strong>the</strong>y poll<strong>in</strong>ated it with such<br />

flowers it fruited" (Midrash, Bamidbar Raba,<br />

31). In o<strong>the</strong>r passages (Bamidbar Raba,<br />

3, 1, etc.), we f<strong>in</strong>d pleas<strong>in</strong>g elaborations <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> tale, how no local pollen helped, how a<br />

pass<strong>in</strong>g expert expla<strong>in</strong>ed that <strong>the</strong> tree longed<br />

<strong>in</strong> its heaxt for Jericho (pollen), and how<br />

<strong>the</strong> valley pollen <strong>in</strong>stantaneously cured it.<br />

r,ruit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> date. <strong>The</strong>re could be no<br />

fltter <strong>in</strong>troduction to this section than <strong>the</strong><br />

Midrash, Vayikra Raba, 3, 1: "<strong>The</strong> palm<br />

tree bears fruit, even so do <strong>the</strong> righteous<br />

bear fruit."<br />

<strong>The</strong> Talmud (Babylonian, Bechorot, 8a)<br />

fixes <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terval between blossom<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

ripen<strong>in</strong>g at twelve months. Both Mishna and<br />

Talmud confirm that <strong>the</strong> fruit was ga<strong>the</strong>red<br />

all <strong>in</strong> one pick<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> harvesters climb<strong>in</strong>g<br />

up <strong>the</strong> trees with ropes and cutt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong>f whole<br />

bunches; only rarely, at <strong>the</strong> start <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

season, were s<strong>in</strong>gle dates ga<strong>the</strong>red. Carobs<br />

and olives, too, were harvested all at once. <strong>The</strong><br />

Mishna (Maasaroth, 1, 2) expla<strong>in</strong>s that it<br />

was at <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir ripen<strong>in</strong>g that<br />

<strong>the</strong> dates were picked: <strong>the</strong> ripen<strong>in</strong>g was<br />

noticeable when <strong>the</strong>y bulged and when<br />

cracks and corrugations appeared on <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

How <strong>the</strong> date palm was used. "Noth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

goes to waste <strong>in</strong> it," Midrash, Bereshit Raba,<br />

41, 1, pronounces; "dates for <strong>the</strong> eat<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

fronds (lulavim) for prayer and praise,<br />

leaves for thateh<strong>in</strong>g booths, bast for <strong>the</strong><br />

mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> ropes and sieves, and its trunk<br />

for ceil<strong>in</strong>gs."<br />

Tosefta, Shabbat, 17 (18), 7, sketches <strong>in</strong> a<br />

few words <strong>the</strong> popular enterta<strong>in</strong>ment <strong>of</strong><br />

guests: "A man just takes what he f<strong>in</strong>ds <strong>in</strong><br />

his house and serves it ... walnuts, dates."<br />

<strong>Date</strong>-porridge was a frequent dish but not<br />

on <strong>the</strong> Sabbath; we are warned (Babylonian<br />

Talmud, Shabbat, 37b) that it would go bad<br />

overnight. "Havitza" (date-cakes) (ibid.,<br />

Baba Bathra, 99b) and "terimah," ground<br />

and spiced dates (Tosefta, Maasaroth, 82, 2)<br />

were also produced. As for date-honey, its<br />

copiousness and quality were <strong>the</strong> early signmanual<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Holy</strong> <strong>Land</strong> and are <strong>of</strong>ten<br />

mentioned <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mishna and Tosefta. Domestic<br />

consumption was as important as<br />

export.<br />

If one took a vow <strong>of</strong> abst<strong>in</strong>ence from<br />

honey, one might still eat date-honey; or if<br />

one absta<strong>in</strong>ed from dates <strong>the</strong>mselves, <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

honey was not forbidden (Mishna, Neddarim,<br />

6, 9).<br />

<strong>The</strong> difference between <strong>the</strong> more expensive<br />

bee-honey and date-honey is well expla<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

<strong>in</strong> Jerusalem Talmud, Peah, Chapter 7,<br />

Halacha 4: "Rabbi Hanania sold bee-honey<br />

but also kept date-honey. Once some muleteers<br />

came, and unwitt<strong>in</strong>gly he sold datehoney.<br />

A few days later <strong>the</strong> same muleteers<br />

passed by and he said to <strong>the</strong>m: Let me not<br />

exploit you unduly, you should know that<br />

<strong>the</strong> honey I gave you was from dates."<br />

An <strong>in</strong>toxicat<strong>in</strong>g liquor can be made from<br />

dates. Tosefta, Maasar Sheni, 2, 2, advises:<br />

"Do not immerse dates <strong>in</strong> water to produce<br />

date-beer"; but <strong>the</strong> Babylonian Talmud,<br />

Baba Bathra, 96b, contents itself with putt<strong>in</strong>g<br />

date-beer on a par with barley-beer and<br />

w<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> right to <strong>the</strong> proper bless<strong>in</strong>g:<br />

"All takes place <strong>in</strong> accordance with God's<br />

word." <strong>The</strong> sap that flowed from <strong>the</strong> severed<br />

top <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> palm quenched thirst (Mishna,<br />

Shabbat, 14, 3), and <strong>the</strong> stones <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fruit<br />

were fed to cattle and were burned as fuel.<br />

<strong>The</strong> fruit and its honey were recommended<br />

as purgatives,- and, like old w<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>the</strong> fruit<br />

had a reputation for bestow<strong>in</strong>g virility; <strong>the</strong><br />

Babylonian Talmud, Shabbat, lOb, says<br />

that a sick man should be sweated by<br />

draughts <strong>of</strong> a solution <strong>of</strong> Persian dates <strong>in</strong><br />

water.'5 <strong>The</strong> Babylonian Talmud ascribes<br />

a row <strong>of</strong> virtues to <strong>the</strong> date: heat<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

satisfy<strong>in</strong>g, purg<strong>in</strong>g, streng<strong>the</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> body.<br />

But we are not to eat dates at all hours:<br />

<strong>The</strong>y are good <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g and even<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

bad <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> afternoon, but at midday <strong>the</strong>re<br />

is noth<strong>in</strong>g like <strong>the</strong>m for dispell<strong>in</strong>g mood<strong>in</strong>ess,<br />

stomach-ache and haemorrhoids."<br />

Pests. <strong>The</strong> only reference <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mishna<br />

(Terumot, 7, 11) is to "wormy" dates.<br />

<strong>The</strong> value <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> date. Mishna and Talmud<br />

mark this by bless<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> lucky barga<strong>in</strong>er<br />

who pays dried figs for dates (Babylonian<br />

Talmud, Erub<strong>in</strong>, 29b) and by exemplify<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir nourish<strong>in</strong>g quality: "Rabbi Kahana<br />

went to <strong>the</strong> market and saw starv<strong>in</strong>g people,<br />

feed<strong>in</strong>g on date waste. He was told that<br />

<strong>the</strong>re was fam<strong>in</strong>e <strong>through</strong>out <strong>the</strong> world, so<br />

he prayed and <strong>the</strong> ra<strong>in</strong>s came."<br />

But <strong>the</strong> value <strong>of</strong> a palm tree depended, <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> end, on its yield<strong>in</strong>g a m<strong>in</strong>imum harvest:<br />

"a tree that bears at least a qab (slightly<br />

more than two litres) must not be cut down"<br />

(Babylonian Talmud, Baba Bathra, 26a).<br />

Parables and similes <strong>in</strong> aneient Hebrew<br />

literature liken Israel to <strong>the</strong> date palm, most<br />

notably Psalm 92, 12: "<strong>The</strong> righteous shall<br />

flourish like <strong>the</strong> palm tree." <strong>The</strong> Midrash<br />

(Bereshit Raba, 41, 1) expla<strong>in</strong>s that, like <strong>the</strong><br />

character <strong>of</strong> a righteous man, <strong>the</strong> palm has<br />

nei<strong>the</strong>r hollows nor ridges. Not less graphic<br />

are <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g passages: "In days <strong>of</strong> old<br />

<strong>the</strong> Sages <strong>of</strong> Israel saw <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> date palm and<br />

its fruits a symbol <strong>of</strong> nobility and lovel<strong>in</strong>ess.<br />

When Aaron and Moses stood before Pharaoh,<br />

it is said that <strong>the</strong>ir mien was <strong>of</strong> m<strong>in</strong>ister<strong>in</strong>g<br />

angels: <strong>in</strong> stature like <strong>the</strong> cedars <strong>of</strong><br />

Lebanon, <strong>the</strong>ir eyes like <strong>the</strong> roundness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

star Venus, and <strong>the</strong>ir beards like dateclusters<br />

upon a palm tree" (Yalkut, Exodus<br />

15 Herodotus (III, 24) records an Egyptian<br />

use <strong>of</strong> date-w<strong>in</strong>e for dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g and for embalm<strong>in</strong>g<br />

as well.<br />

181); "<strong>The</strong> Almighty banished Israel to<br />

Babylon but to feed on dates <strong>the</strong>re and<br />

occupy <strong>the</strong>mselves with learn<strong>in</strong>g" (Babylonian<br />

Talmud, Pessahim, 87b); "Just as this<br />

palm tree is lovely to behold and all its fruits<br />

are sweet and good, so is <strong>the</strong> son <strong>of</strong> David<br />

beautiful and all his works are sweet and<br />

good before <strong>the</strong> Lord" (Pirkei Rabbi<br />

Eliezer, 19); "As <strong>the</strong> hearts <strong>of</strong> palm and<br />

cedar po<strong>in</strong>t to Heaven, even so does <strong>the</strong><br />

heart <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> righteous po<strong>in</strong>t towards <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Holy</strong> One, blessed be He" (Midrash, Bereshit<br />

Raba, 41, 1).<br />

Romnan authors speak much <strong>of</strong> date cultivation<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Holy</strong> <strong>Land</strong>. <strong>The</strong> geographer<br />

Strabo (63-20 B.C. writes): "Here is a<br />

'phoenikon,' an expanse <strong>of</strong> plantations <strong>of</strong><br />

date palms and o<strong>the</strong>r fruit trees. <strong>The</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>cipal<br />

growth <strong>in</strong> Jericho is <strong>the</strong> date, and <strong>the</strong><br />

groves are over a hundred stadia (17 kilometres)<br />

long, watered <strong>through</strong>out from<br />

spr<strong>in</strong>gs. <strong>The</strong> fruit is better than <strong>the</strong> Babylonian,<br />

and only here do you f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>the</strong> special<br />

variety 'caryotae' (ef. 'ereiti' and also 'eureiti'<br />

supra), which, <strong>in</strong> summer, conta<strong>in</strong>s a<br />

large quantity <strong>of</strong> strong 'w<strong>in</strong>e.' <strong>The</strong> <strong>in</strong>come<br />

from <strong>the</strong> grove is very high <strong>in</strong>deed ('Geogra-<br />

phy,' Books XV and XVI) ... and <strong>the</strong> Jews<br />

have forbidden <strong>the</strong> too extensive plant<strong>in</strong>g<br />

(<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> better k<strong>in</strong>d) so as to keep up <strong>the</strong><br />

price" (Book X, Chapter 7). <strong>The</strong> Elder<br />

Pl<strong>in</strong>y states: "In o<strong>the</strong>r respects Egypt is <strong>of</strong><br />

all <strong>the</strong> countries <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world <strong>the</strong> best<br />

adapted for <strong>the</strong> production <strong>of</strong> unguents,<br />

although Campania with its abundance <strong>of</strong><br />

roses runs it close. But Judaea is even more<br />

famous for its palm trees (XIII, VI, 26);<br />

Next to <strong>the</strong>se <strong>the</strong> most famous are <strong>the</strong><br />

caryotae, which supply a great deal <strong>of</strong> food<br />

but also <strong>of</strong> juice, and from which <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>cipal<br />

w<strong>in</strong>es <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> East are made: <strong>the</strong>se<br />

strongly affect <strong>the</strong> head and to this <strong>the</strong> date<br />

owes its name (pig-headed). . . . But not<br />

only are <strong>the</strong>se trees abundant and bear<br />

largely <strong>in</strong> Judaea but also <strong>the</strong> most famous<br />

are found <strong>the</strong>re, and not <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole <strong>of</strong> that<br />

country but specially <strong>in</strong> Jericho, although<br />

those grow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> valleys <strong>of</strong> Archelais<br />

and Phasaelis and Livias <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same country<br />

are also highly spoken <strong>of</strong>. <strong>The</strong>ir outstand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

property is <strong>the</strong> unctuous juice<br />

which <strong>the</strong>y exude and an extremely sweet<br />

sort <strong>of</strong> w<strong>in</strong>e-flavour like that <strong>of</strong> honey. <strong>The</strong><br />

'nicolai"'6 date belong<strong>in</strong>g to this class is not<br />

so juicy but exceptionally large <strong>in</strong> size, four<br />

put end to end mak<strong>in</strong>g a length <strong>of</strong> eighteen<br />

<strong>in</strong>ches. . . .' Of <strong>the</strong> many drier dates, <strong>the</strong><br />

f<strong>in</strong>ger date 'dactylis' forms a class <strong>of</strong> its<br />

own-it is a very long, slender date, somnetimes<br />

<strong>of</strong> a curved shape. <strong>The</strong> variety <strong>of</strong> this<br />

class which we <strong>of</strong>fer to <strong>the</strong> honour <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

gods is called 'chydaeos' (common) by <strong>the</strong><br />

Jews . . . (XIII, IX, 44-46) . . . on <strong>the</strong> west<br />

side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dead Sea is <strong>the</strong> solitary tribe <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Essenes, which is remarkable beyond all<br />

<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r tribes <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole world as it has<br />

no women . . . has no money and has only<br />

palm-trees for company ... (V, XV, 73)<br />

next <strong>in</strong> honour to <strong>the</strong> v<strong>in</strong>e and <strong>the</strong> olive<br />

comes <strong>the</strong> palm. Fresh dates are <strong>in</strong>toxicat<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

though eaus<strong>in</strong>g headaches less when<br />

dried, and <strong>the</strong>y are not, so as can be seen,<br />

beneficial to <strong>the</strong> stomach. <strong>The</strong>y relieve a<br />

cough and are flesh-form<strong>in</strong>g food. <strong>The</strong> juice<br />

<strong>of</strong> boiled dates used to be given . . . to<br />

restore strength and to assuage thirst....<br />

<strong>The</strong> dates called 'caryotae' are applied with<br />

qu<strong>in</strong>ce, wax and saffron to <strong>the</strong> stomach,<br />

bladder, belly and <strong>in</strong>test<strong>in</strong>es. <strong>The</strong>y heal<br />

bruises. <strong>The</strong> kernels <strong>of</strong> dates if burnt and<br />

<strong>the</strong> ashes washed take <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> spodium<br />

and are an <strong>in</strong>gredient <strong>of</strong> eyesalves...<br />

(XXIII, LI).<br />

When one reflects that all this was written<br />

when Rome dom<strong>in</strong>ated all date-grow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

lands and every Senator knew precisely how<br />

valuable <strong>the</strong> date was, any doubts <strong>of</strong><br />

Judaea's pre-em<strong>in</strong>ence <strong>in</strong> this regard must<br />

vanish. Conversely, <strong>the</strong> symbolic mean<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

and economic importance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> date<br />

at home, apart from its merit as a pay<strong>in</strong>g<br />

commodity <strong>of</strong> export, f<strong>in</strong>d expression on <strong>the</strong><br />

co<strong>in</strong>age <strong>of</strong> Simeon and successive Hasmonaean<br />

k<strong>in</strong>gs, not to mention <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Roman Emperors <strong>the</strong>mselves, Horatius<br />

Flavius (First Century A.D.) <strong>in</strong> Epistles<br />

II, 2, versifies <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> source <strong>of</strong> Herod's<br />

State revenue-<strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Jordan Valley,<br />

"Herodis palmatis p<strong>in</strong>guibus" (from i<strong>the</strong><br />

rich palm groves <strong>of</strong> Herod). Cornelius Tacitus<br />

(55-120) writes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sparse ra<strong>in</strong>fall <strong>of</strong><br />

Israel, its fertile soil, its agricultural pro-<br />

duce not unlike that <strong>of</strong> Rome and how,<br />

except for <strong>the</strong> balsam and dates which <strong>the</strong><br />

Empire lacked, its vegetation, too, is similar.<br />

All this <strong>in</strong> his <strong>History</strong> V, 6, with a lyrical<br />

outburst, "<strong>the</strong> soar<strong>in</strong>g palm trees and {<strong>the</strong><br />

grace <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir superb uprightness." <strong>The</strong><br />

fondness which <strong>the</strong> Emperor Augustus had<br />

for "nicolvas<strong>in</strong>" dates from Judaea is respectfully<br />

noted by Greek authors, primarily<br />

A<strong>the</strong>naeus <strong>of</strong> Naucratis, and Jewish; this<br />

variety was made <strong>in</strong>to loaves and cakes <strong>of</strong><br />

that name.<br />

<strong>The</strong> better date groves <strong>of</strong> Judaea were<br />

owned mostly by <strong>the</strong> rul<strong>in</strong>g class and <strong>the</strong><br />

rich. So universally renowned were <strong>the</strong>se<br />

that Virgil, Georgics III, could say: "Prirnus<br />

Idumaeas referam tibi, Mantua, palmas"-Let<br />

me be <strong>the</strong> first to present to <strong>the</strong>e,<br />

my birthplace Mantua, <strong>the</strong> palms <strong>of</strong> Idumea<br />

(Edom, a poetic licence for all <strong>of</strong> Palest<strong>in</strong>e).<br />

<strong>The</strong> m<strong>in</strong>or poet Stratius commiserates<br />

with a conquered land, its palm groves <strong>in</strong><br />

alien grasp, still plant<strong>in</strong>g Idumean woods<br />

that shall not pr<strong>of</strong>it itself (Sylvae, V, 2).<br />

<strong>The</strong> physician Claudius Galen (130-200),<br />

who did pr<strong>of</strong>essional research <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> flora<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Holy</strong> <strong>Land</strong>, praises its dates, <strong>of</strong><br />

surpass<strong>in</strong>g value <strong>in</strong> his prescriptions for<br />

diet and as a drug (Book IV C 19 <strong>of</strong> his<br />

monumental treaties De Sirnpl. Medic. Facult.).<br />

Pausanias, a Greek traveller <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Second<br />

Century, contrasts <strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong> Judea, which<br />

he visited, with <strong>the</strong> Ionian: to him <strong>the</strong><br />

Ionian are <strong>in</strong>edible, <strong>the</strong> fruit from Israel is<br />

more delicate and sweet and reta<strong>in</strong>s its savour<br />

and beauty. Eusebius <strong>of</strong> Caesarea<br />

(260-340) makes mention <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> local palm,<br />

but, as expla<strong>in</strong>ed, it was purely ornamental.<br />

Pompeius Trogus writes <strong>in</strong> his Historiae<br />

Philippicae <strong>of</strong> "a fruitful, smil<strong>in</strong>g wood <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> vale <strong>of</strong> Jericho, planted with date<br />

palms."<br />

Galius Julius Sol<strong>in</strong>us, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Third Century,<br />

presumably a freedman <strong>of</strong> -<strong>the</strong> imperial<br />

household, claims (Collectanea Rerum Memorabilium,<br />

XXXV, 9) that <strong>the</strong> people <strong>of</strong><br />

Judaea live on dates and that, though E<strong>in</strong>-<br />

Gedi is no more, its glory still abides <strong>in</strong><br />

splendid glades and magnificent groves, unspoilt<br />

by time or war.<br />

An anonymous Totius Orbis Discriptio, <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Fourth Century, picks out Jericho as <strong>the</strong><br />

place <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> palm tree called "1nicolvas," and<br />

for mat-mak<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

St. Jerome (345-420) does not fail us,<br />

ei<strong>the</strong>r, for Zoar and its date are recorded by<br />

him; and <strong>The</strong>odorus (circa 530) writes: "In<br />

Lubis (near Jericho) palms grow whose<br />

fruit is big: <strong>the</strong> name is nicolvas." Anton<strong>in</strong>us<br />

Placent<strong>in</strong>us Martyr (circa 570), <strong>in</strong> his<br />

Journeys, adds Tiberias to <strong>the</strong> customary<br />

cit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> Palest<strong>in</strong>e on dates, and discusses<br />

<strong>the</strong> date-w<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> Jericho as a specific aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

ague,<br />

Procopius, a Greek historian <strong>of</strong> merit,<br />

who was, like Eusebius, born <strong>in</strong> Caesarea<br />

(Sixth Century) has a word about Elath<br />

(Eilas) and <strong>the</strong> palms that throve on <strong>the</strong><br />

coast <strong>the</strong>re and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> neighbourhood; <strong>the</strong><br />

Arab Abu-Harib sent a parcel <strong>of</strong> dates from<br />

<strong>the</strong>re to <strong>the</strong> Emperor Just<strong>in</strong>ian and was<br />

appo<strong>in</strong>ted super<strong>in</strong>tendent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> groves as a<br />

reward.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Arab Period (636-1099)<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to Moslem tradition, God<br />

created <strong>the</strong> date palm from dust left over<br />

after Adam was made, and Arabs consequently<br />

call it <strong>the</strong> "Tree <strong>of</strong> Life"; even<br />

nowadays, <strong>the</strong>re is a superstition that <strong>the</strong><br />

variety "hayani," a name pla<strong>in</strong>ly derived<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Semitic word for "life," is especially<br />

life-giv<strong>in</strong>g, and childless Arab women still<br />

swallow "hayanis" to cure <strong>the</strong>ir barrenness.<br />

Adamnanus, Abbot <strong>of</strong> Iona, tell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

travels <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bishop <strong>of</strong> Arculf (623-704) <strong>in</strong><br />

De Locis Sanctis, refers to vast groves <strong>of</strong><br />

palms between Jericho <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Jordan Valley<br />

and Elisha's Spr<strong>in</strong>g-sixty stadia long,<br />

twenty stadia wide, an unbroken stretch <strong>of</strong><br />

delightful garden, "its divers k<strong>in</strong>ds <strong>of</strong> palms<br />

embellish and enrich it." Ibn Hudadbeh<br />

(about 864), an Arab traveller, speaks <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> dates <strong>of</strong> Zoar: "A type called 'alanquila'<br />

(which is a typically Arabic <strong>in</strong>version<br />

<strong>of</strong> 'nicola'), tastier and lovelier than<br />

any I saw <strong>in</strong> Iraq or anywhere else. <strong>The</strong>y<br />

are saffron-hued and no part need be thrown<br />

away; four <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m weigh a rotl." Ibn<br />

fauql (about 978) corroborates this.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Arabs were great admirers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

date, for, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> desert zones, dates susta<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

<strong>the</strong>m. <strong>The</strong> Caliphs were given Ten Commandments<br />

<strong>of</strong> Mohammed whenever <strong>the</strong>y<br />

went forth to do battle, to govern <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

conduct <strong>in</strong> conquered territory. One was.<br />

"Nei<strong>the</strong>r shall ye cut down palm trees nor<br />

burn <strong>the</strong>m." Istahari (about 951) mentions<br />

<strong>the</strong> great date groves <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Jordan Valley,<br />

and Al-Maqdisi (about 985) saw groves near<br />

Haifa, Caesarea and Ramla, and at Beth-<br />

She'an, "aates . . and date-honey"; he was<br />

particularly excited at what he found <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

district <strong>of</strong> Jerusalem (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Jericho),<br />

"fruits not ord<strong>in</strong>arily grown toge<strong>the</strong>r: citrons,<br />

almonds, dates, walnuts, figs! and<br />

dates, citrons and bananas." Jericho, it seems,<br />

was prolific <strong>in</strong> dates, citrons and bananas.<br />

He mentions palms <strong>in</strong> Elath, and eom<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

<strong>the</strong> palms <strong>of</strong> Bethlehem, says: "Here Jesus<br />

was born and here he found <strong>the</strong> lonely palm.<br />

For <strong>the</strong> most part dates do not ripen <strong>in</strong><br />

this region, but <strong>in</strong> Bethlehem it symbolizes a<br />

miracle." This was repeated by Yakut (about<br />

1225), by <strong>the</strong> unknown author <strong>of</strong> a book on<br />

Al Marsid (1300), by Ibn-Batuta (about<br />

1355) and by Salim-ad-Dahiri (about 1467).<br />

In 1047, <strong>the</strong> Persian Nasiri Husru records<br />

palms at Haifa and Caesarea and, <strong>in</strong> 1063,<br />

Antaki, describ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Ghor valley between<br />

Jericho, Beth-She'an and Tiberias, speaks <strong>of</strong><br />

villages, streams and date palms.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Crusaders (1098-1291)<br />

This period damaged <strong>the</strong> <strong>Holy</strong> <strong>Land</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />

many ways, as Arab rule had done; plantations<br />

suffered most. Yet <strong>in</strong>security, taxation<br />

and wantonness still left many palm trees<br />

stand<strong>in</strong>g. Fulcher <strong>of</strong> Chartres, <strong>in</strong> his book<br />

on <strong>the</strong> First Crusade Gesta Francorum<br />

Iherusalem, Peregr<strong>in</strong>antium (1101-1127),<br />

says: "Segor, pleasantly situated and very<br />

rich <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fruits <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> date-palm, very<br />

sweet to taste and which we lived on, for we<br />

could get noth<strong>in</strong>g else."<br />

In 1102, Saewulf saw dates <strong>in</strong> Jericho; <strong>in</strong><br />

1106, Bishop Daniel, <strong>the</strong> Russian, saw dense<br />

groves <strong>in</strong> Beth-She'an and was impressed by<br />

<strong>the</strong> richness and fertility <strong>of</strong> Jericho with its<br />

numerous palms (Vie et Pe'l1r<strong>in</strong>age). Albertus<br />

Aquensis (also <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Twelfth Century)<br />

wrote a <strong>History</strong> <strong>of</strong> Jerusalem <strong>in</strong> Lat<strong>in</strong> about<br />

<strong>the</strong> First Crusade, but he f<strong>in</strong>ds space <strong>in</strong> it<br />

for <strong>the</strong> dates <strong>of</strong> Jericho. Al-Idrisi, <strong>in</strong> 1154,<br />

describes craft on <strong>the</strong> Dead Sea convey<strong>in</strong>g<br />

cargo, different varieties <strong>of</strong> dates <strong>in</strong>cluded,<br />

from Zoar to Jericho and elsewhere, and<br />

William <strong>of</strong> Tyre (1130-1190) writes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

great groves <strong>of</strong> Zoar, us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Crusader<br />

name for <strong>the</strong>m-palmer or "paumier."<br />

When, <strong>in</strong> 1190, <strong>the</strong> soldiers <strong>of</strong> Richard <strong>the</strong><br />

Lion-Hearted were stricken with malaria <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> swamps between Acre and Haifa, it was<br />

no consolation to <strong>the</strong>m that <strong>the</strong>y shivered<br />

amidst countless palms, <strong>in</strong> an area known<br />

as "Palmaraceae." References to <strong>the</strong>se<br />

groves <strong>through</strong>out <strong>the</strong> Twelfth and Thirteenth<br />

Centuries are enough to refute <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ory that Napoleon or Ibrahim Pasha<br />

planted <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

Jacques de Vitry, Bishop <strong>of</strong> Acre<br />

(1210-1240), quotes (<strong>in</strong> Book I, Chapter 85)<br />

Josephus and earlier writers with approval<br />

on <strong>the</strong> lovely, pr<strong>of</strong>itable dates <strong>of</strong> Zoar, but<br />

says: "<strong>The</strong> trees are now very rare <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Land</strong> <strong>of</strong> Israel, be<strong>in</strong>g found, <strong>in</strong> number, <strong>in</strong><br />

Zoar and Jericho only; and <strong>the</strong> fruit is<br />

exported, as it always was." Yakut (1225),<br />

we may add, found only two palms <strong>in</strong> a<br />

Beth-She'an once famed for its dates, and<br />

even those were <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> "hailj" variety, fruit<strong>in</strong>g<br />

every second year. Jacopo da Verona<br />

(about 1230) <strong>in</strong> his Liber Peregr<strong>in</strong>ationis<br />

tells <strong>of</strong> a spr<strong>in</strong>g that watered a great garden<br />

beside <strong>the</strong> monastery <strong>of</strong> St. Jerome; he<br />

tasted its dates and <strong>the</strong>y were very good.<br />

Near Halyn (Elam) he counted more than<br />

70 fruit<strong>in</strong>g palm trees and a large plantation<br />

stretch<strong>in</strong>g for five and more miles, with<br />

many spr<strong>in</strong>gs on <strong>the</strong> hillsides: <strong>in</strong>f<strong>in</strong>itely<br />

more trees than <strong>the</strong> Jews beheld <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

stag<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> oasis some three thousand<br />

years before. At <strong>the</strong> monastery <strong>of</strong> St.<br />

Ca<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>e on S<strong>in</strong>ai, by his report, <strong>the</strong>re were<br />

enough trees to supply dates for <strong>the</strong> monks<br />

over a twelvemonth. Burchard <strong>of</strong> Mt. Zion<br />

(about 1280) notes <strong>the</strong> groves <strong>of</strong> G<strong>in</strong>ossar<br />

and E<strong>in</strong>-Gedi.<br />

From <strong>the</strong> Mamelukes to<br />

<strong>the</strong> Twentieth Century<br />

It is now that <strong>the</strong> agrarian economy <strong>of</strong><br />

Palest<strong>in</strong>e really began to collapse. Most <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> coastal palms disappeared; only few<br />

survived <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Jordan Valley and, as time<br />

went on, <strong>the</strong>y th<strong>in</strong>ned out even more. El-<br />

Kazaw<strong>in</strong>i, <strong>in</strong> 1308, can still mention dates,<br />

bananas and sugar cane <strong>in</strong> Jericho. Abu<br />

el-Fida, <strong>in</strong> 1321, found a handful <strong>of</strong> palms<br />

<strong>in</strong> Gaza and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ghor, El-Qalqasandi, <strong>in</strong><br />

1418, could, unhappily, say: "<strong>The</strong>re are now<br />

no more fresh, or even dried, dates to be got<br />

(<strong>in</strong> Palest<strong>in</strong>e)." Bertrandion de la<br />

Brocquiere (1432 and 1433), however, observed<br />

gardens full <strong>of</strong> date palms <strong>in</strong> Tiberias<br />

and at Acre, where he was given a whole<br />

bunch <strong>of</strong> dates. Meshullam Menachem <strong>of</strong><br />

Volterra, <strong>in</strong> 1481, found <strong>the</strong> Jews <strong>of</strong><br />

Jerusalem eat<strong>in</strong>g honey <strong>of</strong> carobs, dates and<br />

bees, yet Obadiah <strong>of</strong> Bert<strong>in</strong>oro (see Letters<br />

<strong>of</strong> Palest<strong>in</strong>e by Avraham Yaari) writes <strong>in</strong><br />

1488: "I found no date-honey here (<strong>in</strong><br />

Palest<strong>in</strong>e) nor dates. At Jericho, city <strong>of</strong><br />

palms, a reliable person told me that only<br />

three date palms are left and <strong>the</strong>y bear no<br />

fruit." Eight years earlier, Felix Fabri<br />

(1480 and 1483) saw an enormous tree, but<br />

a solitary one, at Ramla, weighed down with<br />

clusters. Majir-ad-D<strong>in</strong> al Hambali (1496 and<br />

1499) apparently saw more than a s<strong>in</strong>gle<br />

tree <strong>in</strong> Ramla and many o<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>in</strong> Gaza.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> travel book <strong>of</strong> Moses Bassola <strong>of</strong><br />

Ancona (1521), <strong>the</strong>re is an account <strong>of</strong> a<br />

large movement <strong>of</strong> Jews from Spa<strong>in</strong> and<br />

Portugal to Palest<strong>in</strong>e. <strong>The</strong> Turks already<br />

ruled <strong>the</strong>re, and an improvement <strong>in</strong> farm<strong>in</strong>g<br />

was perceptible, for some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> newcomers<br />

settled <strong>in</strong> villages and ra<strong>in</strong>foreed <strong>the</strong> earlier<br />

communities <strong>of</strong> Jewish husbandmen, especially<br />

<strong>in</strong> Upper and Lower Galilee; Bassola<br />

refers, <strong>in</strong> particular, to <strong>the</strong> many palm trees<br />

<strong>of</strong> Tiberias.<br />

Pierre Belon, tour<strong>in</strong>g Palest<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> 1553,<br />

reported perspicaciously "<strong>The</strong> dates <strong>in</strong> Gaza<br />

ripen late. <strong>The</strong>se dates rot readily. It is already<br />

three months s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> dates <strong>of</strong> Egypt<br />

and Arabia matured, yet <strong>in</strong> Gaza <strong>the</strong>y are<br />

still green." He is led to challenge <strong>the</strong> extravagant<br />

eulogy <strong>of</strong> Palest<strong>in</strong>ian dates by Hebrews,<br />

Greeks, Romans, Arabs and Crusaders,<br />

dates once so highly esteemed, so healthy<br />

and appetiz<strong>in</strong>g, so sought after by Roman<br />

and Crusader k<strong>in</strong>gs alike. Was it a revolution<br />

<strong>of</strong> climate or taste that brought about<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir present mediocrity, or were <strong>the</strong>y always<br />

as poor as he now experienced? "True,<br />

dist<strong>in</strong>guished men have lauded <strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong><br />

Jericho, but from what I have seen (at<br />

Gaza), <strong>the</strong>re never were very excellent dates<br />

here, for I do not believe that <strong>the</strong> climate has<br />

changed s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>n" (Observations C II 86<br />

321). But as respects Jericho, his <strong>in</strong>ference<br />

was unsound: <strong>the</strong> climate <strong>of</strong> Gaza is suitable<br />

only for s<strong>of</strong>t dates, and <strong>the</strong> conditions which<br />

made <strong>the</strong> dates <strong>of</strong> Jericho and <strong>the</strong> Dead Sea<br />

area so justly famous <strong>in</strong> antiquity are absent.<br />

Bishop Bonifacius <strong>of</strong> Dalmatia was a visitor<br />

to <strong>the</strong> G<strong>in</strong>ossar Valley <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sixteenth<br />

Century and came across two palm trees<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> ru<strong>in</strong>s <strong>of</strong> Capernaum; <strong>the</strong>se Quaresmus<br />

mentions a century later (Palest<strong>in</strong>e by<br />

S. Munk, 1845). De Monconys notes date<br />

palms <strong>in</strong> Tiberias <strong>in</strong> 1647. Doubdan (1651)<br />

mourns <strong>the</strong> lost grandeur <strong>of</strong> E<strong>in</strong>-Gedi:<br />

"<strong>the</strong>re is no vestige <strong>of</strong> palms and all is<br />

wilderness." Friere Eugene Roger, 1663, sees<br />

signs <strong>of</strong> recovery: "<strong>The</strong> <strong>Land</strong> grows all <strong>the</strong><br />

trees we know <strong>in</strong> France, and carobs,<br />

pistachio, bananas, sycamore and dates also"-dates<br />

<strong>in</strong> Tiberias outstand<strong>in</strong>gly, but <strong>in</strong><br />

Jericho, Gath and Ekron, too.<br />

Thomas Shaw, 1738, writes learnedly <strong>of</strong><br />

date-fertilization <strong>in</strong> his Travels and Observations<br />

relat<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> Levant: "It is well<br />

known that <strong>the</strong>re are male and female and<br />

that <strong>the</strong> fruit will be dry and <strong>in</strong>sipid without<br />

a previous communication with <strong>the</strong> male. In<br />

March-April, a str<strong>in</strong>g or two <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> male<br />

flowers are <strong>in</strong>serted <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> sheath <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

female or <strong>the</strong>y spr<strong>in</strong>kle <strong>the</strong> meal over several<br />

clusters <strong>of</strong> females. One male is sufficient<br />

for 400-500 females. <strong>The</strong> date is at its best at<br />

thirty and cont<strong>in</strong>ues for seventy years and<br />

<strong>the</strong>n starts to decl<strong>in</strong>e, bear<strong>in</strong>g 15-20 clusters<br />

each year, weigh<strong>in</strong>g 15-20 lbs. . . . I really<br />

saw two or three (palms, <strong>in</strong> Jerusalem),<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir fruit rarely ever comes to maturity and<br />

is <strong>of</strong> no o<strong>the</strong>r service than (like <strong>the</strong> palm <strong>of</strong><br />

Deborah) to shade <strong>the</strong> sanctuaries or supply<br />

<strong>the</strong> solemn processions with branches."<br />

Abbe Mariti, <strong>in</strong> 1767, is detailed about<br />

varieties, poll<strong>in</strong>ization and propagation <strong>in</strong><br />

his Travels <strong>through</strong> Cyprus, Syria and<br />

Palest<strong>in</strong>e: "Pl<strong>in</strong>y, <strong>the</strong> naturalist, has reckoned<br />

forty-n<strong>in</strong>e species <strong>of</strong> palm trees. Some<br />

that I saw were extremely tall, o<strong>the</strong>rs were<br />

less tall and had thicker trunks. Some bear a<br />

fruit without a stone; o<strong>the</strong>rs a s<strong>of</strong>t fruit <strong>of</strong><br />

oblong shape; some a large and exceed<strong>in</strong>gly<br />

hard fruit. Mathioli, on <strong>the</strong> authority <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>The</strong>ophrastus, assures us that <strong>the</strong> male and<br />

female palm trees are equally fruitful, but<br />

this is not believed <strong>in</strong> Syria (Palest<strong>in</strong>e),<br />

where <strong>the</strong> barren trees are called males, so<br />

necessary for <strong>the</strong> fructification <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rest.<br />

If <strong>the</strong>se are taken away, <strong>the</strong> fecundity <strong>of</strong> a<br />

whole plantation may be destroyed. <strong>The</strong><br />

palm tree is propagated by plant<strong>in</strong>g those<br />

<strong>of</strong>fshoots that spr<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> root or by<br />

sow<strong>in</strong>g date-stones or a part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> germ <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> top called <strong>the</strong> bra<strong>in</strong>. It requires a warm<br />

climate and a moist, sandy, soil, impregnated<br />

with nitre. When it is newly planted, <strong>the</strong><br />

roots are surrounded with salt and ashes, to<br />

give it vigour and forward its growth; but<br />

great eare must be taken to remove from it<br />

all fat or putrid substances as <strong>the</strong>y are very<br />

prejudicial to <strong>the</strong> palm. <strong>The</strong>re is no tree<br />

known which is so durable and hardy as <strong>the</strong><br />

palm. Brav<strong>in</strong>g all <strong>the</strong> severity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

wea<strong>the</strong>r, it preserves its orig<strong>in</strong>al vigour for<br />

several centuries. It has become <strong>the</strong> symbol<br />

<strong>of</strong> everyth<strong>in</strong>g great and wonderful among<br />

men. It signifies victory, triumph, durability,<br />

<strong>in</strong>nocence, justice and particularly <strong>the</strong><br />

fertility <strong>of</strong> Judaea."<br />

M. C. F. Volney, <strong>in</strong> 1783, writes <strong>of</strong> numerous<br />

palms from Gaza to Rafa, that make<br />

an Egyptian scene; and <strong>of</strong> good dates grown<br />

at Jaffa.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> Eighteenth Century, nearly all <strong>the</strong><br />

groves <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Jordan Valley vanished, and<br />

Gaza and Khan Yunis were now <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong><br />

areas <strong>of</strong> cultivation; <strong>in</strong> 1816, we learn from<br />

Irby and Mangles, and, <strong>in</strong> 1833, from E.<br />

Rob<strong>in</strong>son, that <strong>the</strong>re were palms <strong>in</strong> Tiberias,<br />

a solitary tree <strong>in</strong> Jericho, not a s<strong>in</strong>gle one <strong>in</strong><br />

Zoar or E<strong>in</strong>-Gedi; to J. S. Buck<strong>in</strong>gham, <strong>in</strong><br />

between (1821), Jericho was absolutely<br />

bare. <strong>The</strong>se many divergences <strong>of</strong> observation<br />

at Jericho reflect merely <strong>the</strong> extent and<br />

<strong>in</strong>terest <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual visits; <strong>the</strong> basic surmise<br />

is that, if palms still grew <strong>the</strong>re <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

1820's and 1830's, <strong>the</strong>ir number was small.<br />

<strong>The</strong> same would doubtless apply to E<strong>in</strong>-<br />

Gedi, where, <strong>in</strong> 1838, Rob<strong>in</strong>son and Smith,<br />

struck by <strong>the</strong> contrast with palms <strong>of</strong> bygone<br />

years, say that no trace <strong>of</strong> palms could be<br />

seen. In 1847 John Wilson confirms our<br />

<strong>the</strong>sis: "A stunted and languish<strong>in</strong>g date tree<br />

was <strong>the</strong> only memorial <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city <strong>of</strong> palms,"<br />

<strong>in</strong> words almost identical with those used by<br />

John Gadsby <strong>the</strong> previous year. H. B. Tristram,<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1866, may be cited at length:<br />

"<strong>The</strong>re is <strong>the</strong> impression that <strong>the</strong> date-palm<br />

is now scarce <strong>in</strong> Palest<strong>in</strong>e. This cannot be<br />

said <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> maritime region or any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

more sheltered cultivated districts. It does<br />

not exist <strong>in</strong> hilly country where <strong>the</strong> climate<br />

must always have forbidden its growth, but<br />

we have seen it <strong>in</strong> Sidon, Acre, Haifa. Even<br />

about Nazareth <strong>the</strong>re were many trees laden<br />

with dates. In Jen<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>y are <strong>the</strong> feature <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> scenery. (Speak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> Jericho) Above<br />

all <strong>the</strong> last palm has gone and its graceful<br />

fea<strong>the</strong>ry crown waves no more over <strong>the</strong> pla<strong>in</strong><br />

which once gave to Jericho <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

City <strong>of</strong> Palm Trees. . . . (Concern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

Dead Sea) Trunks <strong>of</strong> trees lay tossed-a<br />

great proportion were palms, many with<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir roots entire. <strong>The</strong>se must have been<br />

tossed for many years before <strong>the</strong>y (were)<br />

washed along its shore. <strong>The</strong> timber is saturated<br />

with br<strong>in</strong>e, it scarcely burns. <strong>The</strong>y are<br />

wrecks <strong>of</strong> generations, perhaps <strong>of</strong> centuries<br />

past aceumulat<strong>in</strong>g here from days when <strong>the</strong><br />

city <strong>of</strong> palms extended <strong>in</strong>to groves to <strong>the</strong><br />

edge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> river. . . . (Concern<strong>in</strong>g E<strong>in</strong>-Gedi,<br />

but he is writ<strong>in</strong>g later now) Not a palm<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> area which was once a forest <strong>of</strong><br />

palms. . . . (Concern<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> shores <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Dead Sea) Not a palm rema<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se<br />

lonely recesses though <strong>the</strong> shores are fr<strong>in</strong>ged<br />

with <strong>the</strong> gaunt trunks <strong>of</strong> this tree washed<br />

down <strong>the</strong> Jordan and from <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r side ...<br />

on br'eak<strong>in</strong>g this s<strong>of</strong>t <strong>in</strong>crustation (thick<br />

layers <strong>of</strong> carbonate <strong>of</strong> lime) we found great<br />

masses <strong>of</strong> palm trees quite perfect and even<br />

whole trees petrified where <strong>the</strong>y stood,<br />

grow<strong>in</strong>g as it were to <strong>the</strong> rock, entire from<br />

<strong>the</strong> root <strong>of</strong> stem to <strong>the</strong> last po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> frond .."<br />

No sign <strong>of</strong> leaves or trunk are found<br />

today <strong>in</strong> E<strong>in</strong>-Gedi or along <strong>the</strong> Dead Sea.<br />

How <strong>the</strong>y disappeared is hard to understand.<br />

A. P. Stanley, <strong>the</strong> great explorer and<br />

journalist, reports f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong> 1871, a clump<br />

<strong>of</strong> five isolated date palms at <strong>the</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t where<br />

<strong>the</strong> Jordan flows <strong>in</strong>to Lake K<strong>in</strong>neret, stand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong>re on <strong>the</strong> shore's br<strong>in</strong>k as though to<br />

welcome <strong>the</strong> enter<strong>in</strong>g waters.<br />

Victor Guer<strong>in</strong>, <strong>in</strong> 1884, testifies sadly<br />

aga<strong>in</strong> to <strong>the</strong> dearth <strong>of</strong> palms <strong>in</strong> Jericho,<br />

whereas Lawrence Oliphant, <strong>in</strong> 1886, saw<br />

many <strong>in</strong> Acre: relics, as he comments, <strong>of</strong><br />

Crusader times, and three hundred (he is<br />

precise) <strong>in</strong> bear<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Yarmuk Valley.<br />

In his own words: (Acre) "<strong>The</strong> pla<strong>in</strong> is as<br />

unhealthy now as it was <strong>the</strong>n, and <strong>the</strong><br />

date-groves, which are its most strik<strong>in</strong>g<br />

feature, must have existed <strong>the</strong>n for <strong>the</strong>y are<br />

mentioned <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> records <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> year 1230<br />

A.D. . . . (<strong>The</strong> Yarmuk Valley) . . . dense<br />

thicket <strong>of</strong> tropical underwood above which a<br />

g,rove <strong>of</strong> at least 300 date trees."<br />

Lortet, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same year as Gu&r<strong>in</strong>, writes<br />

that on <strong>the</strong> way from Acre to Haifa, "at <strong>the</strong><br />

foot <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hill, a forest <strong>of</strong> palms encompasses<br />

<strong>the</strong> city. <strong>The</strong>se trees are on <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn<br />

fr<strong>in</strong>ge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> date-ripen<strong>in</strong>g zone ... and <strong>the</strong><br />

fruit is bad and not fit for ord<strong>in</strong>ary consumption."'7<br />

Lortet, naturally, discusses<br />

Jericho; he f<strong>in</strong>ds it hard to understand why<br />

<strong>the</strong> people <strong>of</strong> Jericho do not revive a cultivation<br />

<strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong>y could prosper exceed<strong>in</strong>gly,<br />

but eventually understands that <strong>the</strong> burdensome<br />

taxation on fruit-trees was <strong>the</strong><br />

cause. He ?an but lament that arbitrary<br />

governors should allow a fruitful land to<br />

revert to desert.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Modern Period<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> British Mandate, <strong>the</strong>re were,<br />

<strong>in</strong> all Palest<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>in</strong> 1930, only 250 dunams<br />

(60 acres) bear<strong>in</strong>g fruit, largely <strong>in</strong> and<br />

around Gaza, and <strong>of</strong> varieties suitable only<br />

for eat<strong>in</strong>g fresh-"hayani" and "b<strong>in</strong>taisha,"<br />

for <strong>the</strong> most part. <strong>The</strong> groves <strong>in</strong><br />

Haifa, Acre and Jericho, whi<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> palm<br />

had modestly returned, were ma<strong>in</strong>ly seedl<strong>in</strong>gs,<br />

and <strong>the</strong>ir fruit was worthless.<br />

Gradually, <strong>the</strong> area became greater: <strong>in</strong><br />

1935, it was over 2,000 dunams, a decade<br />

afterwards, 3,000, still concentrated <strong>in</strong> Gaza,<br />

but with beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Jordan and Beisan<br />

Valleys. Of this, one-twelfth was owned<br />

by Jews: as far back as 1920, Jewish farmers<br />

had shown <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> revival <strong>of</strong><br />

date-grow<strong>in</strong>g, import<strong>in</strong>g f<strong>in</strong>er varieties from<br />

Egypt, Iraq, Persia and <strong>the</strong> United States.<br />

Difficulty <strong>in</strong> propagat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> palms slowed<br />

up <strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong> extension. As propagation<br />

depends on <strong>the</strong> small number <strong>of</strong> shoots <strong>of</strong><br />

palm trees (seeds are not used), it was<br />

essential to raise <strong>the</strong>se shoots carefully each<br />

year for plant<strong>in</strong>g; if <strong>the</strong>re were no large<br />

groves, this supply was limited. Hence, <strong>the</strong><br />

recourse to foreign importations, and, <strong>in</strong> this<br />

regard, <strong>the</strong> Settlement Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

and Ben-Zion Israeli, pioneer and expert<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> kibbutz <strong>of</strong> K<strong>in</strong>neret, did excellent<br />

work. From Egypt came <strong>the</strong> varieties<br />

"zaghlul," "samani," "amhat;" from Iraq<br />

and Persia, "halawy," "khadrawy,""gan-<br />

tar," ' barbee," "zabidi," "maktoom,"<br />

"deree" and "sair." From <strong>the</strong> United States,<br />

also, "halawy," "khadrawy," and "deqlelnoor,"<br />

a widespread variety <strong>of</strong> North African<br />

orig<strong>in</strong>.<br />

Import went on. At <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stance <strong>of</strong><br />

veteran growers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Jordan Valley, <strong>the</strong><br />

Israel M<strong>in</strong>istry <strong>of</strong> Agriculture and <strong>the</strong><br />

Palest<strong>in</strong>e Jewish Colonization Association<br />

<strong>in</strong>troduced several thousand shoots from <strong>the</strong><br />

United States to develop plantation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Valley, <strong>in</strong> Beisan and especially <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Arava<br />

(Negev); by 1955-1956, 60,000 shoots<br />

were brought from <strong>the</strong> Persian Gulf and set<br />

out <strong>in</strong> a great nursery <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Beisan Valley<br />

to be planted wherever sub-surface water<br />

was available at no great depth or where<br />

irrigation could be provided.<br />

<strong>Date</strong>-cultivation is <strong>of</strong> paramount importance<br />

<strong>in</strong> certa<strong>in</strong> parts <strong>of</strong> Israel where conditions<br />

do not favour <strong>the</strong> usual field-crops but<br />

where <strong>the</strong> palm can easily make itself at<br />

home. For <strong>the</strong> date-palm will subsist on<br />

brackish water or sal<strong>in</strong>e sub-surface water<br />

<strong>of</strong> more than 3,000 milligrams <strong>of</strong> chlor<strong>in</strong>e<br />

per litre; it sends its roots down <strong>in</strong>to reservoirs<br />

<strong>of</strong> that sort and, once its roots get to<br />

<strong>the</strong>m, can do without fur<strong>the</strong>r irrigation.<br />

Moreover, it adapts well to <strong>the</strong> hottest climates.<br />

No wonder that date-cultivation is so<br />

significant for areas where, o<strong>the</strong>rwise, perplex<strong>in</strong>g<br />

problems <strong>of</strong> settlement confront <strong>the</strong><br />

farmer.<br />

<strong>The</strong> date is not hard to look after: but,<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g bi-sexual (dioecious), it needs artificial<br />

poll<strong>in</strong>ization. This is done today precisely<br />

as it was done long ago.<br />

<strong>The</strong> local varieties may be divided <strong>in</strong>to<br />

three classes: 1) s<strong>of</strong>t dates that do not keep<br />

well, are best for eat<strong>in</strong>g fresh, do not call for<br />

many units <strong>of</strong> heat, and can yield satisfactorily<br />

on <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn coast; 2) semi-dry dates<br />

(mostly Iraqi-Persian varieties, much <strong>in</strong> demand)<br />

that store well after good dry<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

need more heat to ripen than <strong>the</strong> s<strong>of</strong>t k<strong>in</strong>d,<br />

and grow <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Beisan and Jordan Valleys;<br />

3) dry dates that require a very high degree<br />

<strong>of</strong> heat and so thrive <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Arava. <strong>The</strong><br />

proportions <strong>in</strong> Israel (1963) are: s<strong>of</strong>t dates,<br />

21%; semi-dry, 52%; dry, 27%. <strong>The</strong> Israel<br />

varieties are: "khadrawy," 37%; "hayani,"<br />

21%; "zahidi," 16%; "halawy," 10%;<br />

"daqlel-noor," 8%; "barhee," 3%; "sair"<br />

and o<strong>the</strong>rs 5%.<br />

In 1963, <strong>the</strong> total area <strong>of</strong> date-groves was<br />

about 3,000 dunams, 900 <strong>in</strong> bear<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong><br />

rema<strong>in</strong>der still too young to fruit.<br />

Expansion will depend on <strong>the</strong> availability<br />

<strong>of</strong> more shoots from <strong>the</strong> many young trees<br />

that have meanwhile come to maturity; by<br />

1968, <strong>the</strong> area is expected to be 4,000<br />

dunams.<br />

Yields are about a ton to <strong>the</strong> dunam: <strong>in</strong><br />

1962 <strong>the</strong> aggregate yield was 650 tons, and it<br />

is not unreasonable to predict a figure <strong>of</strong><br />

2,600-2,800 for 1970, fresh and dried; <strong>the</strong><br />

"fruit-basket" <strong>of</strong> Israel should conta<strong>in</strong> about<br />

1.5 kg. per capita, and <strong>the</strong> all-<strong>in</strong> requirement<br />

for a population <strong>of</strong> three million will be<br />

4,500 tons. An unremitt<strong>in</strong>g but neessarily<br />

gradual enlargement should rega<strong>in</strong> its ancient<br />

glory for <strong>the</strong> palm tree, and <strong>the</strong> rich<br />

and flattered fruit will once more oecupy its<br />

becom<strong>in</strong>g place <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> economy <strong>of</strong> Israel.<br />
