“The Jet Set and Mid-Century Modern styles have a uniquely American
bent to them,” adds Kennedy. “While the architecture has Bauhaus and other
European influences, I feel that the California architects created their own
unique interpretation of the modernist movement, adapting and evolving it to
take advantage of our fair climate and unique terrain.”
“My goal with the Compound is to celebrate Palm Springs’ architecture in its
heyday, while updating a swanky vintage house for the realities of modern
living, using the best of today’s technology,” states Kennedy. “This is truly a
home created for a Jetsetter – a world-traveler who comes to Palm Springs
for privacy, rest, relaxation, and rejuvenation of the mind and body.”
The cost of the 45-minute tour is $35. For a complete schedule of tour
On Saturday, February 22 the Palm Springs Art Museum’s Architecture and Design
Council will offer their annual Symposium and Tour, this year titled: Sand and Sea –
Modernism in Palm Springs and Sarasota. The full-day program will explore architectural
similarities between Palm Springs and Sarasota, Florida; both recognized for their large
concentration of mid-century buildings. Sarasota appealed to northern dwellers as a
resort for its mild winters, much like Palm Springs. The concentration of Sarasota’s
modern architecture, designed by such architects as Paul Rudolph, Ralph Twitchell,
and Victor Lundy, was named the Sarasota School, yet Palm Springs’ architecture does
not have the distinction of a named school. Following lunch in the sculpture garden,
symposium participants who have purchased tickets for the entire day will board motor
coaches for an interior view of some outstanding examples of Palm Springs architecture.
A cocktail reception will conclude the day at the final home on the tour.
A new event for the 9th Annual Modernism Week is a Sunset Tour of Illuminated
Modern, a nightly exhibition along Palm Canyon Drive that showcases a selection of
specially illuminated contemporary and mid-century buildings designed by prominent
desert architects. Danish Modern and influences from modern eras in Chicago and
Hawaii will also be found as organizers pay homage to modernism across the globe.
In response to public feedback from 2012, a new and exciting series of events dubbed
“Modernism Week After Dark”. Special nightly events will be planned and released for
sale on the website over the coming months. The popular Opening Night party tickets
are available online. This is the official start of Modernism Week on Thursday, February
13, a festive “Modern Mambo” extravaganza at Caliente Tropics, built in 1964. A fabulous
variety of music, food and flavors of the tropics will be enjoyed by more than 300 guests
expected to attend the “hottest” party west of Havana. Additional Modernism Week
After Dark events will occur throughout the week including cocktail parties at stylish
hotels; multiple music clubs and venues featuring live bands, deejays and dancing; and
a special “Party at the Prefabs” to allow visitors to experience the beautifully appointed
prefab model homes showcased like glowing lanterns when lit up in a lively party
atmosphere after dark.
Modernism Week will close on Sunday, February 23 with a very special appearance and
talk given by world-renowned designer Trina Turk. Known for her unique Palm Springsinspired
designs, Trina Turk will present “Sunnylands Chic” at the Rancho Mirage Library
discussing her insight on the iconic style of Leonore Annenberg and the Annenberg
Estate at Sunnylands. An exclusive meet-and-greet cocktail reception will be held at
Sunnylands Center and Gardens in Rancho Mirage immediately following the lecture.
Guests will enjoy visiting with Trina Turk in the beautifully refined setting, impeccably
designed by Los Angeles-based architect Frederick Fisher.
Participants will have the unique opportunity to explore the pristinely planted gardens
designed by the Office of James Burnett, who is also a featured speaker during the
lecture series on Friday, February 21.
Modernism Week has launched a new and improved website and ticketing system at
Post Pop – The Work of
Abe Alvarez-Tostado
Post anything is always a bit tricky
especially when one is Post Pop
Surrealism and Post Pop Cubism. But post
or pop or not, Abe Alvarez-Tostado is force
to be reckoned with on the Coachella Art
scene.
Abe grew up in Long Beach. Along the
way he lived in San Diego and San
Francisco. Each stop added to the
richness of Abe’s work. Self taught and
inspired by his mother, the artist, Carmen
Alvarez-Tostado and her art books, Abe
saw the world through the voluptuousness
of art. He found inspiration in comic
books, skateboard art, street and sticker
art – for Abe art was and is everywhere.
By Angela Romeo
Abe’s work is color and form. The distorted
figures and exaggerated forms suggest
the influence of Cubist and Surreal
movements. The Cubists sought to
break up, analyze and reassemble and
the Surrealist sought the unexpected
juxtaposition, it is Abe’s twist on these
movements that makes him unique. The
bold lines, the flattening of shapes and
saturation of color are hallmarks of Abe’s
work.
But part of being “post” movement means
the artist incorporates the contemporary.
Here again Abe has distilled the
skateboard and urban art cultures.
Pop surrealism was born in the LA
underground of the 1970s. By the 1980’s
its influence was seen in popular culture.
For Abe this was another layer for him to
draw on. He was a part of the skateboard
culture of Southern California. He was
drawn to the work of skateboard artists
Mark Gonzales and Niel Blender.
The skateboard movement in turn had
its influence on the burgeoning Urban
Art scene. Abe was in the midst of the
Urban Art assault. He was witness to
street artists such as Banksy, Doze, JR,
Blu and Adam Neate. As urban art moved
from tagging and graffiti culture to public
space art, Abe saw the influence of this
movement affect his own work.
Abe although a part of these worlds,
continued to create his own style.
Influences are just that, suggestion. Abe
was not content to be a follower when he
could be a leader. “My work is a reflection
of the multicultural cities I have live in. The
freshness of these movements, to me,
gel with the work of the early Cubists and
Surrealist. In each case Art is speaking
out loud and bold for all to see. My work is
loud and bold and fresh,” said Abe. “I am
an artist creating in the ‘now’. The world,
as I see it, is meant to be lived in. To be
‘post’ to me means I respect what can
before but my art is full of life as I am in
this movement.”
Abe’s work reflects the richness of the
past and the lushness of today. His work
maybe seen at www.abealvareztostado.
New Year’s
Eve 2000
By Michael Tapia
New Year’s Eve, 2000, Los Feliz, CA. My
mom and I have invited Timothy Whispering
Eagle for dinner. My mother is making her
famous enchiladas. I hear the front door
ring.
I answer the door and Timothy steps in. I can smell roses in his hand.
“Happy New Year! Michael. I’ve brought flowers for your Mom.”
“Happy New Year, Timothy! She’ll be so pleased!”
“It smells like your Mom’s cooking.”
“She’s cooking your favorite.”
“Yum, I can’t wait.”
”What do you plan to do next?”
“I’m actually thinking it’s time for me to move on.”
“To another school?” Timothy asks surprise in his voice.
“No,” I say, my hand on his arm, “to another city. I think it’s time for me to
spread my wings and live on my own.”
“My mother has been amazing these past few years. I couldn’t have made it
without her indefatigable help.”
“You’ve also been so amazing, Timothy. You’re like a brother to me.” I feel a
lump in my throat.
“I’ve made so many lasting friendships through Sacred Path. I’ll miss you
all.”
Timothy gives me a tight hug. “I support whatever decision you make and
you will always be my brother!
Still embracing, my mother joins OUR HUG.
“Happy
New Year,
my sons!”
I take the flowers and find a vase for them. I place them on the altar in the
living room.
“So, what’s new, Michael? It’s been a while since we’ve hung out.”
“Well, believe it or not, I’ve just completed my fifth year at Braille. I think I’ve
taken just about every class they have to offer.”
(continued
in next
issue)
“Let’s see,” he says. There were the computer classes, Braille reading, voice
technique, guitar classes…”
“That was just the beginning!” I laugh. “I have also completed the 6 unit Art
History class which was transferred to my college transcripts!”

Almost anything I need is right
It even has solar collectors to reduce my electric bill! But
best of all, my doctor, dentist, case manager, pharmacy—
just about anything I could need—are only about 500 feet
my T-cells are up, I have dental care again, and my future
30
Recently, when the Mega Millions lotto was up to a staggering
hundreds of millions of dollars, I sent this email to a handful of
friends -
“The lottery is at over half a billion dollars. If you won it, what
would you do differently?”
Two of my friends took the
question for what it was: a
prosperity exercise designed to
reveal your true desires.
Daniel Barrett, my music
producer and my coauthor
of the forthcoming book, The
Remembering Process, listed
well over a dozen ways he
would spend, give, or invest the
money.
It was pretty impressive, and got me thinking about my
own list.
Lori Anderson, another dear
friend who supports me in all my
endeavors, author of the new
book, Divorce with Grace, listed
her number one desire: to have
her own television talk show.
She, also, got me thinking.
Their serious answers made me
reflect on how I would act if I won
the Mega Millions lotto, too.
What would I do differently?
Or what else would I do, with
hundreds of millions of dollars to
spare?
So I made my own list, which was
eye-opening. (Apparently there
are more music albums and more
books in me.)
What about you?
Making a list of what you would do with that much money can be revealing,
but it’s only the first step.
And don’t deceive yourself into thinking you would just blow the money
on cars and furs and travel and such. You can play with the kid’s view of
money — “I’d buy a house full of candy!” – but you want to go deeper.
After you buy the new cars and the big houses and the world cruises
and all the toys, wine and cheese that you want; and after you pay off all
your debt and give money to family and friends and causes you believe
in; what would you then do?
This is what “The Lottery Secret” is all about.
Face it –
You don’t need more money.
You need clarity and action.
Clarity.
Action.
That’s it!
With those, the money (or whatever may actually help you achieve
your desire) will show up.
But you have to start the ball moving with clarity and action.
And you can begin right now by playing “The Lottery Secret”
prosperity game.
So here’s the question again…
“The lottery is at over half a billion dollars. If you won it, what
would you do differently?”
Well?
Ao Akua
joe
PS – If you need help exploring money as a spiritual self-help tool,
and clearing yourself of limiting beliefs so you can accept more
good in your life, consider The Secret to Attracting Money complete
bestselling audio program.
Note: Many people claim to have a system to help you win the lottery. Here’s
one I have heard of (but not tried): http://outrageous.hooke1.hop.clickbank.net
The second part of the exercise is to ask yourself what you can do right
now, even if baby steps, to move toward creating your desires.
It’s not about the lotto. Virtually everyone dreams of winning it, but almost
none are prepared for it. You have to grow into handling that much more
money. For many, it is too much, too soon.
But you can use the prosperity exercise of pretending you won to -
Reveal your true calling, life mission, or heart’s desire.
Reveal what actions you can take right now, in whatever small way you can,
without more money.
Again, most people need to grow into having more money.
I’ve landed some pretty big publishing, speaking, and consulting deals. But
had that money come when I was homeless or in poverty, or still struggling
on a limited income, I would not have been able to handle the wealth.
I had to dissolve inner limiting beliefs about money, success, self-worth, and
more to allow more money to come into my life.
This is why so many lotto winners lose their money. They aren’t ready for it.
Again, I invite you to use the fantasy of the lotto win to reveal your true
desires, and then to nudge you to look in the mirror and ask what you can
do right now to make your dreams come true.
PSS – Again, a system that claims to help you win the lottery
(which I have not tested) is here:
One of R&B music’s most beloved and consistently popular
vocal groups, The Whispers, began their legendary and
timeless career in 1963. Twin brothers Walter and Wallace
Scott joined with friends Nicholas Caldwell, Marcus Hutson,
and Gordy Harmon to form a local singing group. They
perfected their tight harmonies on the street corners in the
Watts section of Los Angeles and in nightclubs in the in the
San Francisco/Oakland Bay Area. Their vocal style harkens
back to a more genteel era of crooning, preferring soft pillow
talk and songs that speak to heartfelt emotions. They are arguably
the most celebrated R&B balladeers of their generation
and still make women swoon with their silky yet forceful
tenors of twins Walter and Scotty.
at the Birch North Park Theatre, with the San Diego Premieres of
“FREE FALL” and locally produced short film “SQUARED”
FREE FALL
(Freier Fall)
Director: Stephan Lacant
A promising career in the riot control
unit, a child on the way, a loan
from his parents to buy a duplex:
everything is running to plan in
Marc’s life. Then fellow policeman
Kay walks into his life at the police
training academy. They start jogging
together, bringing a breath of fresh
air into Marc’s life – and, for the first
time, he develops feelings for a man.
Torn between the life he knows so
well and the exhilaration of this new
adventure, his life rapidly spins out of
control. In this state of free fall, Marc
cannot make anyone happy anymore.
Least of all himself. 100 minutes,
Wishing you Mounds & Mounds of Almond
Joy and a Whopper of a New Year for 2014!!!
A Royal Walk:
Candi
Gram!
with Candi
Samples
On January 17th 2014, starting under the iconic Hillcrest sign at 7PM, I
will be there to meet the community who supported me in my reign as
your Empress of the ICSD Reign 41. I will start the last walk through
the community from the sign to the Caliph, where we will walk together
as one. It was you, the people, who made this reign a success.
Let's rejoice together in the streets of our community, stopping off at #
1 on Fifth Avenue and then walk to the Loft and onward to the Caliph.
There we'll raise our glasses to you and thank the many who made
this reign what it is.
As we gather together and review Reign 41 as it comes to an end, yes
too soon I say, but looks like we made it. On February 8th, 2014, I will
step down and the new reign takes the throne. I ask you to join me
that day at the Lafaette Hotel, 2223 El Cajon Blvd., for the Peoples'
Ball 6 -9:30pm. Visit http://www.imperialcourtsandiego.com for ticket
information. This will be our day- You, the People, and Me...
It’s That Time
Again
New Year’s Diet Resolution...
How many of us year after
year say “This time I’m
going
to do it?” and on day 2
were
back to are old self. Well
it’s
that time again if we can
make it
a week were on our way to a
healthy
way of life will feel better will
feel
stronger and will even have
better SEX.... So they say. So
do you have your 2014 New
Year’s Resolution figured out yet? It’s a new year. You want a new
you! AND you’ve just eaten your way through the holidays, so it is
time to watch what we eat and exercise. As always we must check
with our physician first before dieting. We don’t want any surprises,
so lets get started. To set yourself up for success, think about
planning a healthy diet as a number of small, manageable steps
rather than one big drastic change. If you approach the changes
gradually and with commitment, you will have a healthy diet sooner
than you think. Eat with others when possible. Take time to chew
your food and enjoy mealtime. Listen to your body. Eat breakfast and
eat smaller meals throughout the day. Of course avoid eating late
night meals. Let me know how your diet is going. I’m here to help.
I’m starting mine along with you let’s help each other and follow along
on facebook or check in at www.empresscandisamples.com Good
luck and let’s get physical.
Entertaining in 2014
One of the most enjoyable aspects of being a couple is entertaining
together, sharing your table with family and friends. As more and
more gay couples tie the knot this will be a fun way to enjoy your new
life together. There are many different party ideas such as a Dinner
Party, Tea Party, Cocktail Party, Special Occasion, or even a Barbecue
can be fun. Choosing a fun theme or appealing look for a party
creates an organizing principle and gives you the spark of inspiration
and motivation to guide your ideas and choices.
Think about the events you already enjoy: A fajita buffet with
margaritas on Cinco De Mayo, a pizza party for the Oscars, or a mint
julep cocktail party in honor of the Kentucky Derby and of course
have your guests bring a Huge Hat to watch the race. All it takes is
that little spark of excitement, and your’e off. My favorite is a Garden
Party- A modern take on a Tea Party. I call it “Girl Talk,” with flavorful
iced and hot teas and a casual buffet of sweet and savory foods and
tea sandwiches.
See you all real soon
“They call us sin city. But it’s not. It’s
angel city,” cab driver Gerardo Gamboa
said. (Credit: KLAS)
Las Vegas Cabbie Finds
$300,000 in Backseat,
Returns it to Poker Player
A Las Vegas cabbie had no second thoughts when he found
$300,000 in cash in a brown paper bag in his cab this week.
He made sure it was returned to the forgetful owner.
“I don’t care from $10 to higher. My dignity is not for sale, and that’s
the way I am. That’s the way our parents taught us when I was a kid,”
cabbie Gerardo Gamboa told CNN affiliate KVVU. “All I wanted to do
was just call my dispatcher and return it, and this is the only chance I
have to show cab drivers in Las Vegas are not bad people.”
The loser of the money -- at least temporarily, thanks to Gamboa’s
good deed -- was a famous 28-year-old professional poker player,
whom officials weren’t publicly identifying, according to another CNN
affiliate, KLAS.
The gambler was so devastated at his loss Monday that “he wanted
to shoot himself in the head,” a cab company official told KLAS.
“He was grateful. He was very understanding; he wasn’t irritated.
To a point he was irritated, but he wasn’t mad or aggressive or anything.
Maybe a little more embarrassed than anything. I mean, he left
$300,000 in a cab, but he was an awesome guy,” Yellow Checker Star
field operations manager Joel Willden told KVVU.
The chief operating officer of the cab company described the sum as
the most found in a cab in his 32 years in the business.
“We had to be as a company extremely cautious that the right person
got the money,” cab firm CEO Bill Shranko told KLAS. “It’s the Christmas
season and we think it’s the best story that I’ve seen in 32 years,
and cab drivers worldwide are going to be very proud.”
It all began when Gamboa drove a man about two miles between
casino-hotels, from the Cosmopolitan on the Las Vegas Strip to
Palms Place, KLAS reported. The man gave him a $5 tip.
Gamboa then went back to the Strip -- the Bellagio casino-hotel.
“When the doorman at the Bellagio opened up the door for the next
passenger, he said, ‘There’s a bag in here. It’s full of chocolate,’”
Gamboa told KLAS.
When he opened the bag, Gamboa was stunned at the six bundles
of $100 bills inside. His next fare was already in the cab, and Gamboa
told the passenger, “Look sir, you are my witness. I didn’t touch
anything here,” Gamboa told KLAS.
Meanwhile, the poker player went to the cab company looking for his
lost money.
Gamboa took the small fortune to the office of his Nevada cab
company, which contacted authorities. After a four-hour police investigation,
officials confirmed the gambler was the rightful owner of the
money, KLAS reported.
Yellow Check Star gave Gamboa a $1,000 reward, made him driver
of the year, and gave him a steak dinner for two, the affiliates reported.
“I did the right thing, that’s it,” Gamboa told KLAS. “They call us sin
city. But it’s not. It’s angel city.”

Leo Gosselin is a pioneer and master of a radically
new technique on strings. The Chapman Stick
Touchboard, invented by Emmett Chapman
in 1974, is a revolution in stringed instrument
technology. The “Stick,” designed in 8, 10, and
12 string versions (the right hand tuned like a
guitar, the left like a cello in reverse), is played
percussively with both hands free to sketch
melodic lines in the manner of a keyboard.
