This society employs 12 missionaries and about 15 school teachers<br />

among the Indians, besides a number of native exhorte~s. Tho<br />

PRIMITIVE METHODISTS.<br />

Chapel situated in Bay-street, Cit!} of <strong>Toronto</strong>.<br />

In the year 1829, :\[r \\,illiilm Lawson, a Primitive :\lethodist Lo.<br />

cal Preacher, from London, settled in York, and immediately commenced<br />

l'reaehing in the market square, formed a :'ociety, and<br />

wrote to the P _II (onference in I·.ngland, for a mi"ionary. Ons<br />

was sent who arrived in r' ugust 1830, and took the society tllU'<br />

formed into the connexion of the said conference.<br />

Connected with this station are 4 travelling preachers, 30 local<br />

preachers, 330 members, and ,1;2 distinct congregations.<br />

~o'j(-.-l he doctrines and rules of the Pnmitive .\Jethodists, for<br />

private members, are the same as the \Vesleyans, from whom they<br />

differ in some points of church government, viz. their distrIct an.!<br />

tlnnual conference, being composed of two parts laymen, anu ~no<br />

part travelling preachers; this was intended to preserve a ju,t<br />

equipoise c f power, and unite all the intelligence and experience<br />

of their society, in their church government.<br />

The Baptist Church in the City of <strong>Toronto</strong> is situated in M:ucil<br />

.treet east, and has service every f.unday at 11 in the morning, 3<br />

in the afternoon, and at 6 in the evening.<br />
