As we watch the athletes from around the world pursue the gold in the 2012
Olympics, we know that it has taken years of training and conditioning for their
bodies and minds to perform at this level.
I cannot imagine the pressure each one must experience as they are going
through their race or particular skill knowing that the world is tuned in. Not only
have they practiced their particular event multiple times but they must have
spent time disciplining their minds for the pressures of the sport.
In the same way we, as Christians, are to discipline our minds for the race we
are to run during our stay here on earth. Numerous scriptures allude to this.
Take
2 Corinthians 10:5 for example, “We demolish arguments and every pretension
that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every
thought to make it obedient to Christ.” Taking every thought captive takes
discipline.
But we can be encouraged that we are not in this battle alone. It is exciting to
watch a race or an event and hear the roar of the crowd cheering their favorite
on to victory. I know the athletes gain an incredible amount of energy and
strength from the roar of the crowd. In the race of life we are running, we too
have a crowd cheering us on to victory. Read Hebrews 12:1-3.
“12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses,
let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And
let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on
Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured
the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of
God.”
We are on the world stage although on a small scale. As we are running the
race, living out the Christian life, the world that revolves around us is watching.
Much like we tune in to watch the athletes at the Olympics, those whose lives
we touch are tuned into our actions, words and deeds. They are spectators but
there is also a great cloud of witnesses in heaven who are cheering us on.
We have our own personal cheering section in heaven cheering us on...our
loved ones who have gone on before us, the great saints of old, Abraham,
Moses, David, Daniel, The Apostles, Paul and many others including Jesus.
They are cheering us on to a victorious end.
Maybe as we keep this in mind we can gain the extra strength, energy and
courage in the day of our troubles, trials and temptations (the race of life) and
when we come to the end of our lives, we will be able to say like Paul did, “I
have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
(2 Timothy 4:7)
In much love, Pastor Darrel

IN THE SPOTLIGHT
In the spotlight this month is our current Board Chairman,
Roger Adams. Roger and his wife Phyllis live at 28716 NE
1750 Road in Garnett. They have two children, Rodney Adams
and Brenda Jenelle Adams. They are the blessed
grandparents of Cody Noel Mundell, Joshua Lee Mundell,
Jonathan Neal Adams, Aailynnia Rae Madison Adams as well
as two great grandsons, Camryn Wilson and Colten Mundell.
Here are a few fun facts and hobbies about Roger:
Did you know that Roger used to help his in-laws,
Benny & Opal Parks run the Skating Rink here in
Garnett
He owned his own dozer when he was just a freshman
in high school
He owned a construction business since 1976
Roger has a passion for horses and loves to ride and train them
He loves to vacation in Colorado and he says he knows every road there!
He also loves to fish and hunt
And he loves his grandchildren
Roger’s favorite scripture is John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son,
that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.(KJV)
His favorite books of the Bible are Genesis and Proverbs.
Roger would like to see closer relationships within the church families as well as church families having
closer relationships within the community. He would like to see the congregation grow and see them
become actively involved in the church operations as well as being more involved with our local needs
as well as close missions.
Roger Adams is one of those men who will almost always say “YES…if I am around” kinda guy. He and
his wife Phyllis are truly a remarkable couple and we are so blessed to have them as a part of our
church family. They are always considerate of the needs of others. They have many extended families
due to their doors are always open for anyone that needs a place to stay. They say they are blessed but
once again we are the ones who are blessed to see and know the hearts of this loving family!
Roger says they have been a part of First Christian Church for 46 years. During those years he has
been very active in our church. He has been an Elder, a deacon, the Committee Chairman, the Board
Chairman, a van driver and been on several committees.
Family
