Crucifer Dan Morrison, Pastors Walston and Hartfelder and
Sacristan Fred Pfanz led the dedication of the Columbarium
Columbarium Dedication Hymn Sing
and Ice Cream Social
by Glen Alexander
On Wednesday, 21 August Grace dedicated the newly
completed Columbarium and Remembrance Garden. Over 100 of Grace’s parishioners attended and sang along with
the unique sound of Pastor Walston’s beautifully restored reed pump organ. These organs were popular in the late 19th
and early 20th centuries – especially in farm steads, which had not yet acquired electricity.
The blonde organ had two candles lighting it, as would have been the case when played in the last century. Linda
Hoch and Ron Kenreich alternated in playing for us and
they never missed a note while pumping away at the pedals.
The old hymns were fun to sing, and they brought
back a lot of memories for many of us. An occasional tear
was seen as reminiscences of childhood churches came to
us from hymns we sung long ago.
At the close of the Hymn Sing, Pastor Will and Pastor
Walston led us out the side door off the altar area, and into
the Remembrance Garden and the space in front of the
Columbarium. Our Pastors conducted a brief, but meaningful
ceremony. During that rite they anointed the four
corners of the Columbarium as they dedicated it to Christ.
The Dedication was closed with prayer.
Almost everyone stayed for ice cream and visited in the
Fellowship hall. Ron and Marcus Miller and Chris, the
site supervisor for Miller Landscapes of Westerville, were recognized and congratulated
for the beautiful way the Remembrance Garden turned out.
The Pastor’s Column
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
Every second Wednesday morning of the month,
after the Women’s Bible study, a group stays to
work in the kitchen washing potatoes, cutting green
beans, dicing and slicing ham. Our church soon begins
to fill with mouthwatering aromas of the food
a group of men of Grace will transport later that day
to Faith Mission.
Faith Mission began February 6, 1966 when, in response
to the closing of the City Mission, Lutheran
Pastor Sam Goers and two other men of Trinity Lutheran
Church in downtown Columbus, served as
Faith Mission’s first board members and volunteer
staff. Back then the Mission opened
at 5:00 pm to provide a meal and beds
for twelve men. Faith Mission became
part of Lutheran Social Services
(LSS) in 1998. Today it is a 24-hour
emergency shelter serving up to 220
men and 46 women at three locations. Faith Mission
is the only organization in Franklin County to serve
three meals a day, every day of the year. Since its
start, Faith Mission has served the homeless community
by offering a secure, Christian-based environment
that is not only a place for a hot meal and a
warm bed, but also a haven of hope for women and
men (learn more at
involvement goes
back to Faith Mission’s
earliest days.
This past trip I was able to accompany Tom Moser,
Tom Seamon, Larry Cepek, Dave Patterson and St.
Paul Lutheran Church member Phil Gross. We loaded
the hot roasters of food and
large cans of applesauce into Tom
Moser’s van. We made our way
downtown where the Mission
staff greeted us as “old friends.”
Everyone knew the drill as we
set up to serve the food.
It’s a powerful experience. It is
so easy for “the homeless” and “the hungry” to remain
anonymous and “faceless” to those of us blessed
with bounty. It’s a powerful experience to hear
words of thanks and “God bless you” from those who
live meal-to-meal and day-to-day. There are as many
stories as there are men to feed at the Mission. But
the story we all share, the one that joins all of us is
It’s a powerful experience to
hear words of thanks and “God
bless you” from those who live
meal-to-meal and day-to-day.
the story of God’s love for the
world in Jesus Christ.
Our congregation’s mission
statement calls us to reach
out with the love of Jesus to
grow disciples and serve our
community. Among the many ways we seek to be
faithful to this call, every second Wednesday of each
month a group of women and men of Grace live this
mission by serving our Lord and the community of
Faith Mission.
With you serving our community
in body, mind and spirit,
Ten Principles for
Graceful Giving*
Principle Nine: - Christian giving
is a reflection of our theology.
St. Paul writes: 11You will be
enriched in every way for your
great generosity, which will produce
thanksgiving to God through
us; 12for the rendering of this
ministry not only supplies the
needs of the saints but also overflows
with many thanksgivings to
God. 13Through the testing of
this ministry you glorify God by
your obedience to the confession
of the gospel of Christ and by the
generosity of your sharing with
them and with all others (2 Corinthians
9:11-13).
There is always more to Christian
giving than meets the eye.
Paul minces no words when he
writes to the believers in Corinth
and beyond that their giving to
the churches in Judea is a powerful
symbol of their “obedience
to the confession of the gospel of
Christ” (vs. 13). This is vividly
apparent when one considers the
context of Paul’s words about
Christian giving.
Paul is not speaking about the
geographical symbolism of the
transfer of cash from the churches
in Greece to the churches in Judea.
Neither is he talking about
the economical
symbolism of
the rich giving to
the poor. Paul’s
words testify to
the theological
statement their
giving makes.
What these Gentile
Christians in Greece give to
their Jewish sisters and brothers
in Christ in Judea symbolizes
Jewish-Christian solidarity under
the Cross in the body of Christ.
That Jews and Gentiles are members
of the body of Christ as equal
heirs is the essence of Paul’s proclamation
of the gospel of Jesus
Christ. This is the ‘mystery’ that
And for Paul these
are not mere words.
They are the gospel
truth he lived for, was
imprisoned for and for
which he died.
had been revealed to Paul (see Ephesians
3:1-9), one he elaborates in
Romans 15:25-28. And for Paul
these are not mere words. They are
the gospel truth he lived for, was
imprisoned for and for which he
died.
In the same way what we give
is not simply a matter “between
God and me.”
What we give in
response to God’s
gracious love is
as much a public
statement of our
faith, an expression
of our theology,
as are the
words we sing, pray, and confess
in our public worship as we gather
around Word, Water, Bread
and Wine.
giving is an offering of praise
and thanksgiving to God
The Wednesday Morning @ Grace Women’s Bible
early Christians in Rome. His longest letter, it is considered
Paul’s masterpiece in which he articulates the mystery
of the gospel of justification and salvation to Jew and
Greek alike by the grace of God through faith in Jesus
Christ. Romans changed Martin Luther’s life. “Romans”
THE MIRACLES OF SHARING
“Honor the Lord with your substance and the first fruits of all your produce.” (Proverbs 3:9)
During Day Camp there is always a family meal and
program. Last year the LOMO Day Camp program was
at Grace and this year at St. Paul’s. Last year there was
an overabundance of food remaining after the Thursday
evening program. We called W.A.R.M. and were
able to share that food with one of the Kids Lunch Club
sites. This year again, at St. Paul’s, there was an abundance
of food left. Knowing what we had learned the
year before enabled us immediately to call W.A.R.M.
The food was delivered to a Kids Lunch Club site and
distributed to the residents at that location.
Sometimes just the results of one situation precipitates
the ability to act quickly when similar opportunities
arise. In Jesus’s feeding of the 5,000, there was
definitely the importance of sharing what each had. It
resulted in an overabundance of food and 12 baskets
remained.
In so many ways our baskets are overflowing because
of all that God has given to us. However the needy are
also always present. With each of us sharing even a little,
much can be provided. Such is our continued ministry
of outreach through Grace’s First Fruits program.
Summer is waning, school is back in session, free
and reduced lunch programs are in full swing, but that
doesn’t take care of the food situation for the clients
at W.A.R.M. Please consider donating even one item
to our grocery carts on our First Fruits Sunday each
month. What may seem insignificant becomes an abundance
when combined with others who also share what
they have.
August 4, 2013
Dear Members of Grace,
My family and I cannot thank you enough for opening your
hearts to us and sharing your love and support with us during
the time of visitation and funeral for my husband, our father and your pastor, John Zimmerman.
We send a big thank you to Pastor Will for setting things in motion for us to have the
funeral at Grace. We appreciate the time that it took to make the contacts needed for this to
happen. John would have been so honored to see how many former and present members of
Grace came together to celebrate his life. The choir was wonderful. Being in the choir was
one activity John often mentioned that he missed most after he retired. The hours spent by the
Kitchen Krew to provide lunch for everyone who attend the funeral was amazing. That was
a genuine labor of love which was felt by our family, relatives and friends. John always love
to have Linda Hoch play the organ over the years he served at Grace. Again, our family was
so appreciative that she could change her work schedule and plan one more time for him and
for us. Many thanks to Kathy Snead and the office staff for their work on the funeral bulletin.
Thanks to Dan Morrison for carrying the crucifix, Linda Fichtelman for manning the nursery
during the service, Paul Grant for handling the sound, and Eric Bush and Chris Banks for
video taping the service for us. Of course, we hive special thanks to Merlyn Seitz for officiating
the service. In his last days, John found his voice and was able to tell us what he wanted
for his funeral service including the hymns to be sung. We felt the service was a true celebration
of John’s life.
Many of you have sent monetary gifts to the Zimmerman Family Fund and for this we give
thanks. Let me share with you what this fund is all about. Many years ago, John established
a special checking account which he called his “slush fund.” He put all re-numerations he
received from weddings, funerals, baptisms and other sources into this account. They experienced
the joy and freedom of being able to give it all away. Whenever a need was presented
to him, he helped by giving money to that person in a very quiet way. Many times he just did
“random acts of kindness’ anonymously as the spirit moved him. We, his family, never knew
who the recipients were. His daughters and I could think of no better way to honor John and
his generous spirit that to do the same acts with the Zimmerman Family Fund. Already there
have been two recipients from this fund. Each of our daughters will also be given money
from this Fund to use for random acts of kindness in memory of their dad.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to all of you.
Sincerely,
Candi, Tammy, Debbie and Becky Zimmerman.
Editors note: Pastor John Zimmerman served Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church as Senior
Pastor for 27 years. Grace members who were here at Grace during the time Pastor
John served, will always remember and cherish his quiet kindness, his heartfelt and inspiring
sermons, and his love of Christ and the Church. We thank God for the time and dedication
given to Grace by Pastor John.
Men of Grace Fishing Trip
Reaches the Limit
BLESSING THE BACKPACKS
As a way of celebrating the beginning of the school
year, students of all ages brought their backbacks to
both worship services on August 12th.
The Youth and Family Ministry and Learning
Ministry want to emphasize that all children
are welcome to participate at any time
throughout the year. If your child is only able
to participate once or sporadically through the
year, we still welcome his/her involvement.
FISH ON!
Those words
were heard loud
and often on Saturday,
August 17
aboard the Rio
Rita on Lake Erie. As you can see from the full ice
chest and the smiles on the faces above, the expedition
was a huge success. The catch of the day was perch
- in abundance - as the Grace fishermen reached their
limit very early in the day.
So it is official. Next year, same time, same place,
same boat, same catch. We hope to see you there.
The M.O.G. leadership team has planned some exciting
outings this year. Kick off is a pancake breakfast
on Saturday, September 21. See you then. Bring
PARENTS PLEASE NOTE: As an effort to ensure
the safety of all the children participating in any form
of programming, as well as follow best practices, we
request that each youth/child have emergency health
and contact information on file. Forms can be found
on the website under “children” and turned into the
child’s Sunday School teacher. Thank you for helping
us maintain best practices.
“We’re so glad you asked…..”
...a response to questions and concerns on a variety of topics. If you have a question, please
put it in writing and deliver it to the Church Office or email it to: office@grace43081.org.
Questions must be signed.
Question: When I was growing up we said, “he descended into hell” in the Apostles’ Creed.
We’ve been saying, “he descended to the dead.” Why the change and where does it come from?
Response: The Apostles’ Creed has a fascinating history. Scholars trace its roots to a 2nd
century Roman Christian baptismal statement based on Matthew 28:19 (“Go, therefore and make
disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”). Over time
it expanded to the form we have today.
It’s important to note we are talking about translations of the original languages and not about crucial theological/belief
differences. Christians have used “hell” and “dead” when reciting the Apostles’ Creed for a very long
time. Some students of the Bible explain the translations based on the Greek and Latin of Ephesians 4:9. The
Greek “descended to the lower parts of the earth” (κατέβη εἰς τὰ κατώτερα μέρη τῆς γῆς – katebe eis ta katotera
mere tes ges) was rendered in Latin as “he descended into hell” (descendit ad inferos). Thus, the Latin of the
Apostles’ Creed reads: descendit ad inferna and the Greek text is: `αναστάντα `απο των νεκρων - anastanta apo
twn nekrwn – “he descended to the dead.”
...both texts and translations
express the long-held Christian
affirmation of the totality
of Christ’s having taken on the
punishment of sin.
While “he descended to the dead” is very likely the more accurate translation,
both texts and translations express the long-held Christian affirmation
of the totality of Christ’s having taken on the punishment of sin.
Thus, having truly died, Christ journeys all the way to the place of the
dead. To be sure much more could be said about the understanding and
development of “hell” and “the place of the dead” in the Bible. For example,
some point to a connection of the Creed with 1 Peter 3:18-20a where
we read the cryptic comment: “For Christ also suffered for sins once and for all, the righteous for the unrighteous,
in order to bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit, in which he also went
and made a proclamation to the spirits in prison, who in former times did not obey….”
So what does all this really mean? On the one hand, it demonstrates how whether we say “hell” or “dead” is
mostly a matter of translation and what we are accustomed to saying. On the other hand it demonstrates the depth
and breadth of what we Christians confess with the generations of the faithful before us each time we speak the
creed.
