GROUP ACTIVITY TIME
• Option #1 - Thumbs up/Thumbs down
What you need: nothing
What you do: Have the children sit on the floor. Tell them to show you “thumbs up” for actions that
show love or “thumbs down” for actions that do not show love.
★sharing a toy
★giving a hug
★hitting
★letting someone else be first in line
★saying something mean
★smiling at someone
★helping clean up toys
What you say: Today in our story we learned that Jesus wants us to love everyone, even those
people who aren’t kind. Is it sometimes hard to love someone who isn’t kind? It sure is, but when
we love those people, God’s love shines through us.
• Option #2 - Musical Hugs
What you need: open space, music
What you do: The leader plays music and the children dance to the music. When the leader stops
the music, the children find a friend to hug (nice, gentle hugs). Every time the music stops the
children must find a different person to hug.
What you say: Today in our story we learned that Jesus wants us to love everyone, even those
people who aren’t kind. Is it sometimes hard to love someone who isn’t kind? It sure is, but when
we love those people, God’s love shines through us.

• Option #3 - This Little Light of Mine song
What you need: nothing
What you do: Teach the children the following song and motions.
This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.
This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine, let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.
(The kids hold up their index finger and move it in a circular motion.)
Won’t let Satan blow it out.
I’m gonna let it shine.
Won’t let Satan blow it out. I’m gonna let it shine. Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.
(When the kids sing “Won’t let Satan blow it out...they blow on their finger.)
Let it shine til Jesus comes. I’m gonna let it shine.
Let it shine til Jesus comes. I’m gonna let it shine. Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.
Hide it under a bushel - NO! I’m gonna let it shine.
Hide it under a bushel - NO! I’m gonna let it shine. Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.
(The children cup one hand over their finger and when shouting NO they remove their cupped hand)
Let it shine over the whole wide world, I’m gonna let it shine.
Let it shine over the whole wide world, I’m gonna let it shine. Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.
