TITLE:
Baymod ® A 52
TEXT:
Baymod ® A 52 is a highly effective modifier for
improving the notched impact strength and
processability of rigid PVC. If PVC modified with
Baymod A 52 is used to produce thin-walled
unpigmented articles, their transparency is
similar to those modified with standard MBS.
Used in combination with Baymod A 80 (bulk
SAN), Baymod A 52 can also be used to modify
halogen- and plasticiser-free semi-rigid
thermoforming film. A typical field of application
is decorative film for the lower part of vehicle
interiors where it is less exposed to light and
heat.
Storage
Baymod A 52 keeps for at least 2 years if
stored in a cool, dry place and protected from
light.
1. Use of Baymod A 52 as an impact
modifier in rigid PVC
Processing and compound properties
Blends of PVC and Baymod A 52 are prepared
and processed by the usual methods employed
for PVC. Processing aids are necessary, the
usual combinations of stabilisers and lubricants
being suitable.
After compounding in a high-speed mixer, the
dry blend can be processed straight away on
suitable equipment, e.g. twin-screw extruders.
For injection moulding and single-screw
extrusion, however, the processing of granules
has proved more suitable.
Rigid PVC modified with Baymod A 52 is
characterised by:
- very high toughness even with small
additions of modifier
- improved melting characteristics
- good surface finish
- good transparency and thermoforming of
film in comparison with standard MBS
modifiers.
properties of laboratory compounds comprising
2. Use of Baymod A 52 in semi-rigid,
halogen- and plasticiser-free film
Processing and compound properties
Blends of Baymod A 52 and Baymod 80, are
prepared and processed by standard methods
such as compounding in a plough-share mixer,
melting and homogenisation, such as in a twinscrew
extruder or compounder, and
thermoforming on a calender.
Usually, ABS film is imparted a surface decor
with the aid of a hot embossing roller (at
approx. 200 °C) and later processed into
moulded parts (e.g. glove compartment covers,
kneepads etc.) by thermoforming.
Film based on Baymod A 52 is characterised
by:
- outstanding processability on the calender
- good thermoforming properties
- good grain stability
- favourable price/performance ratio
- very good recyclability of, for example,
ABS moulded parts.
