Creative Writing – The Power <strong>of</strong> Story<br />

The easiest place to start writing is from what you know best – and that’s<br />

you. This hands-on, high energy, fun course integrates effective writing<br />

techniques and styles with your own personal experiences and stories.<br />

Through a myriad <strong>of</strong> writing prompts and stimuli, including music,<br />

words, phrases and visualizations you’ll have an endless supply <strong>of</strong><br />

writing topics and jumping <strong>of</strong>f points to expand your writing horizons. In<br />

addition, you will learn and practice how to streng<strong>the</strong>n and convert your<br />

personal stories into works <strong>of</strong> fiction utilizing storyboarding techniques,<br />

and character and plot-line enhancements. You will have <strong>the</strong> opportunity<br />

to write, share and receive oral feedback in a sensitive and positive<br />

environment. For those that want to continue writing <strong>the</strong>ir own stories,<br />

you’ll be provided with information on where to start, organize, and<br />

retrieve your memories. This is a great chance to explore and fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />

develop creative writing skills and techniques using your own personal<br />

stories as source material. Be bold – give life, depth and interest to all<br />

your stories and put it in writing!<br />

Jewellery: Mixed Metals<br />

COURSE CODE ARTS1929 SECTION 48<br />

Instruction will address shaping, etching, texturing, patina and cold<br />

joining techniques. Relief designs will be etched into brass and copper<br />

utilizing non-acid etchant. Additional texturing will be accomplished with<br />

hammers, punches and metal mesh. Explore a variety <strong>of</strong> colourations<br />

through <strong>the</strong> application <strong>of</strong> patina solutions and torching. These<br />

finishes will be sealed for permanency. Shape and punch metals into<br />

components using a jeweller’s saw and metal snips. Cold-joining <strong>the</strong>se<br />

components will be accomplished with miniature nuts and bolts as well<br />

as handmade rivets. Instruction will also include <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> metal wire<br />

to weave metals toge<strong>the</strong>r and to finish pieces. Although jewellery will be<br />

<strong>the</strong> main focus <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> course, <strong>the</strong> techniques taught can be applied to<br />

small sculptural art pieces. Please note that this course does not include<br />

soldering. There will be a $100 material fee payable to <strong>the</strong> instructor.<br />

Oil Painting<br />

This studio course in safe, non-toxic and environment-considerate<br />

practise in oils, is designed to engage you in <strong>the</strong> fundamental aspects<br />

<strong>of</strong> painting. Specific issues that form <strong>the</strong> language <strong>of</strong> painting will be<br />

explored. These will include spatial structure, mark-making, colour,<br />

shape, form, scale, texture, and surface relationships. Learning<br />

traditional and contemporary handling <strong>of</strong> oil paint, and with individual<br />

instruction, you will develop confidence in your own painting ability.<br />

This course is suitable to all skill levels from beginner to advanced. You<br />

are invited to work with oil paint in an environment that encourages<br />

individual freedom and expression.<br />

Painting Basics<br />

This course provides an introduction to acrylic painting. The projects<br />

will help you develop drawing and painting skills, as well as learn an<br />

overview <strong>of</strong> acrylic painting techniques while encouraging personal<br />

visual exploration and expression. Working from a variety <strong>of</strong> sources,<br />

focusing on a selection <strong>of</strong> painting concerns and perspectives, you will<br />

acquire a foundation for future artistic painting endeavours. There will<br />

be a $20 material fee payable to <strong>the</strong> instructor.<br />

Photography – Breaking <strong>the</strong> Rules<br />

Please note: Instruction is best suited for intermediate to advanced<br />

photographers.<br />

Create more dramatic images by looking beyond <strong>the</strong> basics and<br />

shooting photographs that evoke emotion and express a unique<br />

vision. Instruction and <strong>the</strong> inspirational surroundings will inspire and<br />

encourage you to free your creative spirit and harness your passion for<br />

photography. Discover how this can be accomplished by breaking some<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rules. Experiment with various techniques including movement,<br />

multiple images and montages. High dynamic range imaging will also<br />

be explored. Design and composition and <strong>the</strong>ir use in developing<br />

more expressive images will be discussed. Free yourself from any<br />

preconceived ideas about how a photograph should look. Instruction<br />

consists <strong>of</strong> an intensive shooting schedule, with ample one on one<br />

guidance in <strong>the</strong> field; seminars and presentations, plus individual and<br />

group evaluation <strong>of</strong> participants’ images. This course has no access to<br />

a computer lab, however you may bring a laptop if desired, to assist<br />

with image storage, selection and transfer for sharing and printing.<br />

Assistance will be provided if needed.<br />

Watercolour Explorations <strong>of</strong> Subject<br />

Review old and learn new methods and techniques with <strong>the</strong> medium <strong>of</strong><br />

watercolour. Explore a variety <strong>of</strong> subjects – from painting <strong>the</strong> ruggedness<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> wilderness, <strong>the</strong> beauty <strong>of</strong> florals, and <strong>the</strong> peacefulness <strong>of</strong> a still<br />

life, to <strong>the</strong> colourful reflections <strong>of</strong> waterscapes. Each step <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> way<br />

will be explained, explored and supported. Learn how to start and know<br />

when to stop painting. Instruction will include demonstrations, regular<br />

constructive encouraging critiques, and kind personal attention.
