THE DUKE JD/LLM: INTERNATIONAL AND COMPARATIVE LAW
Duke Law’s JD/LLM in International and
Comparative Law prepares students for the
increasingly international practice of law.
Students complete requirements for both
degrees in six semesters and two summers,
with a summer start prior to the first full
year of law school. The summer after your
STUDY INTERNATIONALLY
Duke operates the Duke-Geneva
Institute in Transnational Law, in
Switzerland, and the Asia-America
Institute in Transnational Law, in
Hong Kong. Each institute enrolls
students from Duke as well as from
other U.S. law schools and partner
universities (University of Geneva
and Hong Kong University) for a fiveweek
intensive summer program.
Duke faculty and guest faculty from
around the world live in residential
quarters with students and teach
small, rigorous courses in areas such
as terrorism and humanitarian law,
comparative environmental law, and
international business law.
first year of law school is usually split between
study at one of our international institutes
and work in an overseas job placement with
a law firm or business.
PRACTICE INTERNATIONALLY
In the five weeks before the summer
international institutes begin,
JD/LLM students often work overseas
for a law firm, nonprofit organization,
or business. Students also can earn
credit for international externships
during the second or third year of
school. Our Office of International
Studies provides extensive support
for students interested in working
abroad; if we don’t already have a
work opportunity available in your
preferred area or location, we
can help you create it.
