PURSUE YOUR PASSION FOR SERVICE
“There are a lot of opportunities
to get involved as
a student in public interest
activities, and there are a
lot of public interest organizations
and law firms who
are happy to have Duke Law
students intern or extern
with them. That’s what I was
looking for when I came to
Duke and that’s what I found
when I got here.”
FIND MENTORS WHO INSPIRE YOU
“For me it was inspiring
that, at Duke, some of the
very best faculty members
are women. There’s something
about seeing people
who look like you, in this
case women, doing things
you hope to do one day,
that makes your chances
of doing those things seem
more realistic. And that
really serves as a catalyst
for working hard.”
PICK A FIRM THAT FITS YOUR STYLE
“The best thing I did in
my job search was contact
almost all the Duke Law
alumni in the markets I
was interested in. They
were very helpful in securing
interviews and in
explaining the dynamics
of their local legal market.
In the medium-sized
markets I was looking at,
not many Duke graduates
interviewed and I’m sure
the Duke name alone got
me in some doors, even
before I sent a transcript
or a writing sample.”
Joanna Darcus ’12 received a
post-graduate fellowship from
the Independence Foundation
to work with the Consumer
Law Unit of Community Legal Services of
Philadelphia. At Duke Law, she took advantage
of multiple public service opportunities,
VITA and the Innocence Project among them,
and received two summer public interest
grants to pursue public interest positions.
Sarah Boyce ’12 was editor in
chief of the Duke Law Journal and
the first person in Duke’s history
to win the Dean’s Cup moot court
competition two years in a row. After a clerkship
on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth
Circuit, she will serve as a Bristow Fellow
in the Department of Justice. She highly
recommends journal participation to polish
writing skills and build relationships.
Jess Cheney JD/MA’10 is
an associate at Fabian &
Clendenin in Salt Lake City,
a firm he chose because he
wanted to be able to take advantage of
outdoor activities and maintain a good
balance between work and family life. He
said his firm’s summer recruiting retreat
to the Grand Canyon was a particular
selling point.
