Bully Awareness Month
MonMonMonthMonth
In October the counseling department supported our school system in recognizing
National Bully Awareness Month. The 6 th grade attended a convocation earlier in
the year about bullying. The concepts taught in this presentation were reviewed
with the students. In 7 th grade students were taught to be up standers, not
bystanders. The focus was on the positive things students can do to support
others who are being bullied and treated unkindly. The ending project, I am the
Majority, can be viewed on the NEMS school main page and guidance page. The
8 th grade students were presented with a lesson on cyber-bullying that included
the four types of cyber-bullying, how online actions can cross the line into bullying
behavior, and how to support students who are being cyber-bullied.
All students were taught about the differences between true bullying and just
being in a conflict with someone. Students were also given resources about how to
report bullying at NEMS. They were told about the Bully Box in student services as
well as the online reporting system. The address to report bullying is
DoTheRightThingNEMS@nobl.k12.in.us. This link can also be found on the main
page of the NEMS website.
The month concluded with an evening parent presentation about how students are
using electronic media, cyber-bullying, and the media landscape of today.
