Bully Awareness Month
MonMonMonthMonth
In October the counseling department supported our school system in recognizing
National Bully Awareness Month. The 6 th grade attended a convocation earlier in
the year about bullying. The concepts taught in this presentation were reviewed
with the students. In 7 th grade students were taught to be up standers, not
bystanders. The focus was on the positive things students can do to support
others who are being bullied and treated unkindly. The ending project, I am the
Majority, can be viewed on the NEMS school main page and guidance page. The
8 th grade students were presented with a lesson on cyber-bullying that included
the four types of cyber-bullying, how online actions can cross the line into bullying
behavior, and how to support students who are being cyber-bullied.
All students were taught about the differences between true bullying and just
being in a conflict with someone. Students were also given resources about how to
report bullying at NEMS. They were told about the Bully Box in student services as
well as the online reporting system. The address to report bullying is
DoTheRightThingNEMS@nobl.k12.in.us. This link can also be found on the main
page of the NEMS website.
The month concluded with an evening parent presentation about how students are
using electronic media, cyber-bullying, and the media landscape of today.
Dear Parents:
We are pleased to announce, beginning with the 2013-2014 school year, the Noblesville Middle
Schools are implementing the FitnessGram testing program to evaluate fitness levels of our
students. The FitnessGram testing program is supported by solid physical education, health and
wellness curriculum.
What is “FitnessGram”
Physical fitness/body composition testing program reporting individual fitness levels to be
shared with parents
Utilizes Healthy Fitness Zones (HFZ) to determine students’ overall fitness levels
Students are tested in the areas of cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, muscular
endurance, flexibility, and body composition
Students are not graded by their fitness scores
Scores will place students in the HFZ or Needs improvement category
The following will be discussed with students:
This time of their lives is a rapid period of growth and you will see an increase
weight and possibly % body fat as some fat is essential for growth
Everyone grows at a different rate, this is NORMAL
BMI and % body fat scores are an estimate
% body fat is the relationship between % fat as it relates to muscle-bone-body fluids
and organs
Anyone in the “risk” section of any category just means attention to that specific
area should bring about improvement and thus create more healthful scores in the
future
Obesity is discussed as a “health risk” for certain diseases, but not related to any
one’s specific % body fat score since this is a time of growth
All FitnessGram information for each student is personal and confidential
FitnessGram in the Noblesville Middle Schools measures both BMI and Body Fat %. The
method of testing uses height and weight measurements and an electrical impedance
instrument. At the Middle School level, students will participate in height and weight
measurements/body composition analysis in a private and secure environment at school. A
parent may request their child opt out of the height and weight portion of FitnessGram by
contacting their son/daughters Wellness teacher.
If you have any further questions about FitnessGram, please visit the website at
www.fitnessgram.net or contact your child’s Wellness teacher.
Thank you for your continued support in the education of Health and Wellness of our
students.

NOBLESVILLE, INDIANA 46062
317-773-3171
Dear Parents,
Indiana Public Law IC 20-34-3-12) requires annual screening test of the visual acuity
of each student enrolled in or transferred to grade 8. Noblesville Schools Nurses
along with Riverview Nurses will conduct the screening November 21 st , 2013 at
NWMS and December 3 rd , 2013 at NEMS.
This screening procedure in no way replaces the complete medical evaluation given
by your physician, but is a fair assessment of visual acuity. Your school nurse will
notify parents if more comprehensive testing by a physician is recommended.
Please let us know if you have further questions.
