JULY 2013

Last month, we celebrated the 

official start of summer with a 

BANG! What a celebration it was. 

The Summer Solstice Celebration by far 

was one of the biggest events we have 

had. So many boats participated in the 

boat parade – one of the biggest the 

marina has experienced, and afterward, 

we all, including the kids, enjoyed the 

various landside activities. Many kudos 

go to S/C Tom Leweck, who 

conceptualized this event, and his 

committee for a job well done. 

Two of our biggest regattas of the 

year, Cal Cup and Cal Race Week, are 

now behind us. Both were a huge success 

thanks to Marylyn Hoenemeyer, 

chairman of Cal Cup, and Monica Antola 

and Mary Stuyvesant, chairmen of Cal 

Race Week, and of course, the PROs and 

the many race committee volunteers on 

and off the water. Many of the racers 

commented on our outstanding race 

management of both regattas and CYC’s 

fine hospitality. Thank you, gals, for your 

dedication and hard work. My special 

appreciation and thanks to Monica and 

Mary for involving the Juniors by giving

them the opportunity and experience to 

participate onboard some of the boats 

racing in the Cal Race Week Regatta. 

Speaking of Juniors, every 

Wednesday this month, plus the first 

Wednesday in August, we’ll have 

Juniors onboard various CYC boats 

racing in the Sunset Series. So far 14 

Juniors have expressed a desire to 

participate. This will be a great 

experience, not only for the Juniors, but 

also the skippers. Who knows, the Juniors 

may even show the skippers some new 

racing tactics? 

I think we all agree that our monthly 

magazine, the Breeze, is one of the best of 

any yacht club’s publications. Our Editorin-Chief 

Paula Cameron, Managing Editor 

Vince Mattera, and Editorial Assistants 

Diane Adler and Steve Edwards deserve 

our appreciation and gratitude for putting 

together excellent issues month after 

month. We would love to hear from you 

what you like, or perhaps dislike about the 

Breeze. Any suggestions or ideas you may 

have as to content, articles that you are 

most interested in reading, articles that you 

would like to be included but are not at 

present, more or less coverage of our social

reciprocal clubs. 

Whether you are cruising down the 

coast, or flying to another city, your 

membership at CYC gains you entrance 

to yacht clubs, city clubs and athletic 

clubs around the globe. When you do 

travel, it is best to check in with our 

Membership Representative, Claudia 

Moore, to get a letter of introduction 

and also check on dress codes, hours of 

operation, amenities, and available hotel 

rooms prior to departure. Having visited 

several yacht clubs over the years, I can 

attest to the warm welcome you receive

when they hear you are visiting from CYC. 

July is filled with events both on and 

off the water. We kick off the month with 

our annual Fourth of July Barbeque which 

is a family favorite. During the afternoon 

you can use the pool and paddle tennis 

courts or join the Power Fleet harbor 

dinghy cruise around the marina with a 

lunch stop at Killer Shrimp. 

The Barbeque starts at 5 p.m. and ends 

with the fireworks at 9 p.m. Over the 

weekend of the 12th, we have both the 

Newport Harbor cruise to Balboa Yacht 

Club and the King of Spain Regatta. For 

those cruising down to BYC, Jr. S/C David 

Collins has arranged a Mexican buffet for 

Friday night, an al fresco breakfast on the 

patio on Saturday, and a delicious steak and 

seafood dinner with a DJ and dancing 

Saturday evening. It is imperative that you 

sign up for this cruise by June 30, so we 

can send BYC our list of boats and give a 

count on meals. If you would like to drive 

down for part of the cruise, please make a 

reservation for the meal period you will be 

attending. The King of Spain Regatta, 

which invites Star sailors for two days of 

racing, will taking place at CYC. Regatta 

Chairman Sam Haythorn and the CYC race 

committee are sure to put on a great event. 

During the last week of the month 

there are several activities to choose 

among. The Power Fleet will be hosting 

the Junior Blind for their annual Fishing 

Trip. All CYC members are invited to join 

in pairing with a Junior Blind fisherman 

for a morning of fishing on a commercial 

fishing boat. It is an experience you won’t 

forget. Contact George Etter if you have 

interest in participating. The second Pool 

Cocktail Party and Kids movie night is 

slated for Friday the 26th, followed by the 

Power Fleet Dinner Dance, themed 

“Margaritaville,” on the 27th. With a live 

steel band, island food and specialty 

drinks, a build-your-own-margarita bar and 

music by parrot head DJ Scott Jarema, this 

is sure to be a great party. 

For families planning to attend the 

Family Cruise this summer, the dates have 

been changed to accommodate the 

USODA Pacific Coast Championships. 

The new date is August 2-4, so grab the 

kids and plan on cruising over to the 

Isthmus for a weekend of family fun. 

Cruise Chairman Mike Shocklee has 

promised good weather and lots of 

activities, so give the front desk a call and 

make your reservation.

ith 85 boats racing in 10 handicap and one-design 

classes, San Diego Yacht Club's Yachting Cup 

Regatta certainly qualifies for one of the West Coast's premiere 

buoy racing events. CYC campaigners won three of those ten 

classes in a VERY windy regatta. Jay Steinbeck’s Andrews 52 

Margaritaville 1.5 scored an impressive eight-point victory in 

the talent-laden, 11-boat PHRF AA big boat class. Curt 

Johnson's Avet dominated the J/80 class with five bullets and a 

deuce, while Jeff Janov's Farr 40 Dark Star was the only boat in 

the regatta to have a perfect scorecard - six straight bullets.

Sanguinetti Regatta 

Report for 2013

Last May, Anne Sanguinetti was unable to attend her 

family-sponsored Optimist Regatta for the Juniors, an 

event that is near and dear to her family, and one that 

we have successfully hosted for many years. It is with great 

pleasure that I can report that this year Anne, her daughter 

Margot, and granddaughter all attended the trophy 

presentation in the Fireside Room. 

The conditions nearly fooled us. On Sunday morning the 

wind was from 140 degrees and by noon it was already 

blowing at 10 knots. Interesting for some, but challenging for 

the youngest sailors. As PRO for the championship fleet 

outside, I set a course close to the harbor entrance in case the 

wind increased too much, forcing us to run for safety. 

However, the Juniors displayed excellent boat control and 

braved the conditions with enthusiasm. The breeze built into 

the teens with heavy seas, creating superb surfing conditions 

throughout the fleet! We were able to complete six close races 

before returning to the dock in the afternoon. No tow home 

required on this day! 

Carrie and Alan Blunt ran the green fleet from the guest 

dock with great success. Having the wind from much farther 

left than usual, enabled the course to be set in the main 

channel, with the leeward mark just off the guest dock. Carrie 

Blunt reported the parents on the dock witnessed some 

spectacular leeward roundings with overlapped Optimists 

hurtling round the buoy in a manner that belied their relative 

sailing inexperience. 

It was a great day on the water for the juniors, and I must 

thank everyone who contributed as part of the Race 

Committee team. 

Wednesday Night Sunset Series Party 

Not just for Racers Anymore!

Looking for a change in your midweek routine? Have you 

got a case of the “hump day” blues and are in need of a 

distraction? Or, like me, are you looking to start the 

weekend a little early? Well come on down to the Club on 

Wednesday nights for the post-race party and BBQ following 

the Sunset Series! 

We all know about the Sunset Series races the Club puts on 

every Wednesday night during the summer season. But did you 

also know about the post-race party following? It’s not just for 

the racers! Even if you don’t race, it’s a great opportunity to 

unwind after work, or to bring the kids down for a mid-week 

break. The staff puts on a great barbecue spread down by the 

pool, there’s a full bar with signature drinks and me on the 

decks spinning tunes. The party starts at 7 p.m. and goes to 10 

p.m., but it's been known to run longer! With the weather 

getting warmer, and the prospect of a great summer of racing 

already underway, it’s not too late to come on down and join the 

fun. Who knows, you might even get out to race on a boat!

California Yacht Club hosts large 

regattas, but some of the most 

interesting are the local ones. 

Thursday evenings throughout the 

summer we host the Starlight Series for 

our Star boat fleet. Racing begins 

outside, west of the north entrance of the 

marina, at 6 p.m. The wind is usually 

strong enough for three races on a 

windward-leeward course. 

Seems simple enough, but the Star 

is a challenging boat to sail and our fleet 

includes Olympic and Star World 

champions. Though these guys are great 

sailors, they welcome newcomers and 

are out to enjoy an evening of racing. 

Winning is always nice, even if the 

trophy is a hat, and the competition on 

the water can be loud. After the boats 

and course are put away, we have a nohost 

reception in the bar at the Club 

which can get loud as well as they revisit 

the evening’s racing.

Club’s inflatable boats, close to the

Something Old, Something New… 

No one Blue!

marked a new chapter 

2013 in the California Cup 

history as it was the first time that two 

premier classes – the West Coast 70s 

and the Farr 40s –were invited to sail 

in CYC’s most prestigious regatta. 

Old mixed with the new as five 

venerable sleds and eight Farr 40 onedesign 

boats lined up on “Cal Cup 

Row” in front of the Club, providing 

members with a fine view of some of 

the most competitive racing boats in 

Southern California. 

This was the 50th anniversary of 

the first Cal Cup and even the weather 

gods seemed to know it should be a 

memorable event. Blue skies, flat 

seas and moderate winds provided 

near perfect conditions for the 

competitors for the entire weekend. 

Saturday saw the sleds sailing a 

random leg race that harkened back to 

the Cal Cup’s early years with “the 

entire course within a six mile area 

from Santa Monica Pier to El 

Segundo… never more than four miles 

offshore” to quote a July 1966 issue of 

The Dinghy. Making the proper sail 

selection was a challenge for 

navigators and crew alike as 

the fleet sailed their 32 mile 

Bay Tour. After beating, 

reaching and running for 

four hours, the top three 

WC 70s finished 

within 14 seconds of 

each other with 

defending Cal Cup 

champion, Taxi Dancer first to finish and 

first on corrected time. Maverick, 

skippered by CYC’s Chris 

Slagerman,corrected to second place 

over Roy Disney’s Pyewacket, also 

sailing for CYC with our own Bob Little 

at the helm. 

On the windward/leeward course set 

off the Venice Pier, PRO Tom O’Conor 

sent the Farr 40s on three double sausage 

races, with the course lengthening and 

moving to the right as the wind 

strengthened and clocked. Each race 

was won by a different boat with 

only a single point separating the 

top four boats after the day’s 

racing – a testament to the 

competitiveness of the fleet.

scheduled for Sunday, the winner of the Cal Cup was up for 

grabs. Going into the final race, Pyewacket had pulled to 

within one point of Taxi Dancer after winning the first race 

of the day, while four boats were in serious contention for the 

top slot in the Farr 40 class. The Farr 40 finish in Sunday’s 

first race was especially tight, with five boats finishing within 

20 seconds, two of them in a dead heat. Stenciled sail 

numbers on white spinnakers are quite the challenge for a 

PRO. 

And down to the wire it was! Three seconds was the 

difference between Pyewacket’s and Taxi Dancer’s corrected 

times in their final race, with the Disney boat taking the edge. 

So it is Pyewacket that will be added to the list of California 

Cup champions that includes a different Pyewacket sailed by 

another Roy Disney in 1994. In the final Farr 40 race, there 

was almost as much excitement on Steve Murphy’s JoAnn 

from SIBYC for getting the gun and finishing second overall 

in the regatta, as there was on Viva La Vida, whose second 

place finish insured that the Jeff Shew/Bill Durant entry from 

LBYC would also have its name added to the Cal Cup. 

With a sumptuous Mexican buffet to replenish their 

energy and free beer to quench their thirst, the racers barely 

noticed the brief time ashore before the trophy ceremony 

began on the front lawn. Commodore Uta Leslie presented 

beautiful crystal vases to the top three finishers in each class. 

And as the trophy ceremony drew to an end, a surprised 

Commodore was hoisted onto the shoulders of two sailors for 

the group photo of the winning crews. Quite a view from 

that height, I’m sure! 

Many thanks to the myriad of people who helped make 

this event a success: the boat owners who vacated their slips 

on Cal Cup row, the Race Committee volunteers (including a 

mark set boat muscled by our Junior sailors!) who made the 

Regatta Chairman's job easy, the press corps that posted 

photos and updates to our website and Facebook page, the 

jury who sorted through a critical protest, CYC members

whose vessels served as race committee boats or as part of the 

spectator fleet, and the management and staff who professionally 

handled the onshore activities. The words of praise and 

appreciation from the competitors make the effort all worthwhile.

April Book Mates: “Beautiful Ruins”

In May, Book Mates discussed 

"Beautiful Ruins" by Jess Walter, 

enthusiastically moderated by Betsy 

Linn who decorated the room with 

charming posters of Italy and set the 

table with tempting Italian fare. Cecilia 

Samartin thoughtfully donated an 

autographed copy of “Beautiful Ruins,” 

which was claimed by Donna Petersen, 

the lucky winner of a drawing. 

Walter’s novel has earned 

widespread recognition and strong 

accolades from high-profile media 

outlets such as Esquire, the New York 

Times, Washington Post, Entertainment 

Weekly, Goodreads, Hudsons, Amazon, 

and many more. Publisher’s Weekly 

selected “Beautiful Ruins” as one of the 

“best books of 2012,” and described the 

book in the following summary: 

“Edgar Award–winning author 

Walter's well-constructed, bittersweet 

romance begins in April 1962, when a 

young innkeeper, Pasquale Tursi, puts up 

the "ethereal" American actress Dee 

Moray, who has arrived supposedly sick 

with stomach cancer at the remote Italian 

port of Vergogna. She has come from the 

extravagant Rome location of Cleopatra 

along with the philandering, tempestuous 

co-stars Elizabeth Taylor and Richard 

Burton (Walter's title is taken from a 

description of Burton at 54). Pasquale 

soon discovers that 20th Century–Fox's 

chief troubleshooter, the young Michael 

Deane, has in fact whisked Dee, 

pregnant with the married Burton's child, 

away from the public eye to avoid 

scandal. Predictably, Pasquale falls in

and the studio to get a discrete abortion 

in Switzerland. Fifty years later, the

The Spokanebased, 

47-year-old 

author told the Los Angeles Times: 

“This is about Italy in the 1960s, 

Hollywood now, Hollywood then, the 

Seattle music scene, the Donner party, 

World War II. Hollywood is like a 

giant mirror, I think, and I used it that 

way in the book, reflecting characters 

back to themselves. I've been 

simultaneously drawn to and repelled 

from Hollywood for years. I wanted to 

explore how we're all defining 

ourselves now. With Facebook and 

Twitter, we're all our own little 

publicists in a way. And the thing we 

think of as Hollywood is this kind of 

studio system, this thing that is sort of 

fractured and not what it was. The 

novel is full of shots at the vacuous 

banalities Hollywood turns out.”

Field is set to direct and co-write, with 

the author, the adaptation of the novel. 

While many Book Mates 

appreciated Walter’s storytelling, his 

writing style, his satirical take on 

Hollywood, and the plot resolution in 

the final chapter, there were several 

dissenters who were critical of 

perceived historical inaccuracies and 

plot contrivances, and actually (tongue 

in cheek) named the author as their 

least favorite character of the book.

Alan Field and Gail Namerow won 

the Spring King/Queen of the Hill 

Paddle Tennis Tournament, with 

Mitch Creem and Setsuko Anthony taking 

second place in a close finals set on 

Saturday, May 11, at CYC. Following the 

morning tournament, the eighteen players 

with some of their spouses enjoyed lunch, 

as the winners were presented with 

trophies, large beach towels with the name 

and date of the tournament embroidered on 

them. Everyone enjoyed the format where 

the winners moved up to the next court 

and the losers remained on the court. Then 

the new foursome traded partners, and the 

same procedure happened until the final 

match on Court #1 ended after 11:55 a.m. 

The winners on Court#1 became the spring 

King/Queen of the Hill. A good time was 

had by all.

Chinese Garden Tour 

and Lunch at the 

Huntington Library

On Wednesday, May 15, thirty garden 

aficionados from CYC boarded a bus to 

the Huntington Library for a tour of the 

fabulous Chinese Gardens, sponsored by 

CYCWA. The weather was beautiful, sunny 

Southern California style – warm, but not too hot. 

The Huntington Chinese Garden is called 

“Liu Fang Yuan”, which translates as “The 

Garden of Flowing Fragrance” and is the largest 

Chinese garden outside China. Inspired by the 

centuries-old Chinese tradition of designing 

private gardens for scholarly pursuits.The creation 

of the garden began in 2000 and was truly a 

cross-cultural effort from start to finish, designed

and built by a team of architects from Suzhou, a Chinese 

city renowned worldwide for its ancient gardens, and 

builders from California’s Huntington Library. The garden 

was designed to create, preserve, and promote the rich and 

complex traditions of Chinese culture. Today, this 

authentic garden is a special place for visitors to feel 

inspired by the elegant harmony of nature and poetry. Liu 

Fang Yuan is described in the Huntington Garden brochure 

as combining “the scenic beauty of nature with the 

expressiveness of the arts… A walk through its paths 

enriches the mind and spirit alike.” 

Our docent-led tour concluded with a Chinese 

luncheon at the Fresh Water Pavilion Tea Shop by the Lake 

of Reflected Fragrance. The docents provided by the 

Huntington Library were very knowledgeable – we learned 

some interesting facts such as the art of bonsai is common 

to China as well as Japan, but actually originated in Egypt 

and that the wavy design of the tops of the garden walls 

are meant to look like a dragon. 

We then had time to further enjoy the gardens before 

boarding the bus for the return trip to CYC. All in all, a 

lovely day. Thanks to CYCWA First Officer Nancy 

Matzdorff for making the arrangements.

paralysis of genius, and good old-fashioned 

parental love.” Sounds like a great summer

Thank you all for your contribution and participation in 

our second annual CYC Marine Trade and Vendors 

event. Your collaborative involvement in the care and 

service of your boats is paramount for our boat owners who are 

the lifeblood of our esteemed California Yacht Club. 

Furthermore, your contribution of prizes, valued at $2070, for 

our silent auction brought in $700 for the Junior Sailing Fund 

in support of the Commodore’s theme this year “Our Future, 

Our Juniors.” We remain with $850 in gifts to use at other 

Junior events this year. 

In our Boat Forum, special thanks to Two Harbors Master 

Armando Eason for coming in for the day to give us an update 

on Two Harbors and Catalina Island. A tribute goes to USS 

Coast Guard Maurizio Vecchione for his presentation 

‘Suddenly in Command.’ Kevin Donahue, West Coast Rep for 

Lewmar, demonstrated in much detail how to service winches 

to the interest of so many sailors. Our day closed with Zac 

Sutherlund’s slide show presentation on ‘Sailing Around the 

World Alone,’ an arduous feat, what else can one say! Much 

more transpired this day. Personally meeting and spending time 

with so many wonderful members was the big treat! Thank you 

all for your collaboration.

Fourth of July Dinghy Cruise 

Do join us for this annual celebrative event, we are meeting 

at the CYC guest dock at noon. Dress in your 4th of July attire, 

accessories will be handed out to augment your decorum. Call 

your friends who have dinghies to join in the fun on the water. 

We will cruise to the Killer Shrimp Restaurant where there is 

ample docking space for everyone. If you cannot make it by 

dinghy, bike over, or come by car. Everyone, please make your 

reservation at the front desk, we do not want the surplus of 20 

people without reservations that we had last year, much too 

disruptive for this special busy holiday. After lunch let’s stay 

together in our dinghies to cruise around the harbor in our 

patriotic mood with fanfare and music.

The CYC summer program is in full swing. This year we 

welcome back these summer coaches: Allie Blecher, Jill 

Calbi, Gregory Dair, Barrett Sprout, Johney Rey Ahedo, 

David Kirby, Toni Festa and Sterling Root. New to CYC ‘s 

staff this summer are Erica Parker, Jackie Dair, Celena Staff 

and J.T.Mellecker. Whether sailing or rowing, racing or 

cruising, beginning or advanced, the guidance and coaching 

provided by this crew to our young athletes encourages full 

participation and learning. The rowing program’s two-week 

summer camps provide the perfect opportunity to discover 

sculling and possibly prepare to join the CYC Rowing Team in 

the fall. The sailing program is designed to meet the needs of 

those who are just beginning to learn the sport and those 

perfecting their skills on the race course. 

Join our Juniors and their families for the Annual Junior 

Luau on July 19 for an evening of fun, food and music. CYC’s 

Family Cruise to Catalina Island is scheduled for August 3 and 

4. This year’s venue, the Isthmus, ensures room for all to

summer season’s main highlight is the Junior Awards Banquet.

Memorial Day Regatta 

Consistency Pays Off for Junior Racers

This year three CYC Junior racers – Jessica McJones, 

Cooper Weitz, and I – participated in the Memorial 

Day Regatta, held in Long Beach. I arrived early 

Saturday morning to ensure a parking spot, only to find 

light breeze and a perfect day ahead of me. There were 

clear, sunny skies, and, although the wind started out in a 

southwesterly, it shifted throughout the day north. As it 

shifted, the breeze picked up, topping out at around 15 

knots. My goal for the weekend was to qualify for the 

O’Day Single-handed Championship, held in New Jersey in 

September. There were 18 boats competing, and my goal 

was to be top five. All three of us were very consistent

throughout the weekend: Cooper had three bullets by the end of 

the regatta. Jessica was up in the front of the fleet consistently, and 

I kept my goal in sight by finishing in the top five every race. By 

the end of the day I was exhausted and ready for some food and a 

good night’s sleep. 

Sunday arrived and I was ready to go back out on the water. 

We started the morning with some stretching, which in the long 

run helped me not be so sore while sailing. My goal for the day 

was to stay in the top three, which I successfully achieved. Sunday 

was lighter, with inconsistent winds coming from Catalina. The 

courses were very long, and although the fleet was spread out, the 

top boats were very competitive. This helped me to stay on my 

toes, keeping my eyes out for new shifts and puffs. 

By the end of the weekend I successfully qualified for the 

O’Day Regatta, along with finishing fourth overall. Cooper 

finished in second place, and Jessica finished in eighth. Overall it 

was a great weekend of sailing, as it is always fun to be on the 

water, and I am looking forward to many more events coming 

soon in the summer months. 


New Members

Luci and Willow Jenkins and sons 

Fisher (7) and Bodie (4) are excited 

about connecting with the boating 

community while enjoying the CYC 

pool and Junior Sailing Program as well 

as other family and Clubhouse events. 

Both Luci and Willow grew up in 

Madison, Wisconsin, and moved to 

California after college. Currently 

residing in Culver City, Willow owns 

and operates a film industry video 

equipment business and Luci is a 

nutritionist and full-time mom. They 

have enjoyed exploring California in 

their RV camper but are now ready to 

get off the land and onto the sea. 

David and Christina (Tina) Segel and children Katie (17) and Henry (15)

in Pacific Palisades. David has raced 

sailboats both on and offshore his entire 

life. He also enjoys Expedition Powerboats 

and managed to navigate the Northwest 

Passage with four friends in 2010. He sails 

a J/70 out of CYC, and a Swan 40 out 

of the Hamble, in Southampton, 

England. The family is also looking 

forward to the Junior Program. Tina is 

a full-time mom and David is in the 

private equity business.

Nicole and James Nicholas reside 

in Lake Balboa and spend their free time 

sailing their Hunter 320 in Santa Monica 

Bay. They are very excited to be joining 

the CYC family, and are looking 

forward to sailboat racing, social 

activities, cruising, and reciprocal 

privileges. Nicole is a producer and 

James is a financial advisor. They also 

enjoy various philanthropic endeavors. 

Their first child, a baby girl, is expected 

in September and they are sure that she 

will be an Olympic gold medalist in 

sailing in the 2032 Olympics.

Angeles and have three lovely kids 

scattered all around the United States. 

Their 43 Silverton, Aviva, is docked at 

CYC. Isaac is a hedge fund manager 

(aka The Multiplier) and Aviva is an 

insurance broker. Preferring Southern 

California weather, they have recently 

relocated from New York City. 

Spending time on their boat is much 

preferred over the hectic Wall Street 

scene. Aviva and Isaac are looking 

forward to meeting other Club 

members for socializing and planning 

multi-boat trips to destinations beyond 

Catalina Island.
