Last month, we celebrated the
official start of summer with a
BANG! What a celebration it was.
The Summer Solstice Celebration by far
was one of the biggest events we have
had. So many boats participated in the
boat parade – one of the biggest the
marina has experienced, and afterward,
we all, including the kids, enjoyed the
various landside activities. Many kudos
go to S/C Tom Leweck, who
conceptualized this event, and his
committee for a job well done.
Two of our biggest regattas of the
year, Cal Cup and Cal Race Week, are
now behind us. Both were a huge success
thanks to Marylyn Hoenemeyer,
chairman of Cal Cup, and Monica Antola
and Mary Stuyvesant, chairmen of Cal
Race Week, and of course, the PROs and
the many race committee volunteers on
and off the water. Many of the racers
commented on our outstanding race
management of both regattas and CYC’s
fine hospitality. Thank you, gals, for your
dedication and hard work. My special
appreciation and thanks to Monica and
Mary for involving the Juniors by giving

them the opportunity and experience to
participate onboard some of the boats
racing in the Cal Race Week Regatta.
Speaking of Juniors, every
Wednesday this month, plus the first
Wednesday in August, we’ll have
Juniors onboard various CYC boats
racing in the Sunset Series. So far 14
Juniors have expressed a desire to
participate. This will be a great
experience, not only for the Juniors, but
also the skippers. Who knows, the Juniors
may even show the skippers some new
racing tactics?
I think we all agree that our monthly
magazine, the Breeze, is one of the best of
any yacht club’s publications. Our Editorin-Chief
Paula Cameron, Managing Editor
Vince Mattera, and Editorial Assistants
Diane Adler and Steve Edwards deserve
our appreciation and gratitude for putting
together excellent issues month after
month. We would love to hear from you
what you like, or perhaps dislike about the
Breeze. Any suggestions or ideas you may
have as to content, articles that you are
most interested in reading, articles that you
would like to be included but are not at
present, more or less coverage of our social
events, more or less photos. Please send

Irecently had a
phone call
from a CYC
member who
stated that his
membership was
paid for several
times over because
of his use of
reciprocal clubs.
Whether you are cruising down the
coast, or flying to another city, your
membership at CYC gains you entrance
to yacht clubs, city clubs and athletic
clubs around the globe. When you do
travel, it is best to check in with our
Membership Representative, Claudia
Moore, to get a letter of introduction
and also check on dress codes, hours of
operation, amenities, and available hotel
rooms prior to departure. Having visited
several yacht clubs over the years, I can
attest to the warm welcome you receive

when they hear you are visiting from CYC.
July is filled with events both on and
off the water. We kick off the month with
our annual Fourth of July Barbeque which
is a family favorite. During the afternoon
you can use the pool and paddle tennis
courts or join the Power Fleet harbor
dinghy cruise around the marina with a
lunch stop at Killer Shrimp.
The Barbeque starts at 5 p.m. and ends
with the fireworks at 9 p.m. Over the
weekend of the 12th, we have both the
Newport Harbor cruise to Balboa Yacht
Club and the King of Spain Regatta. For
those cruising down to BYC, Jr. S/C David
Collins has arranged a Mexican buffet for
Friday night, an al fresco breakfast on the
patio on Saturday, and a delicious steak and
seafood dinner with a DJ and dancing
Saturday evening. It is imperative that you
sign up for this cruise by June 30, so we
can send BYC our list of boats and give a
count on meals. If you would like to drive
down for part of the cruise, please make a
reservation for the meal period you will be
attending. The King of Spain Regatta,
which invites Star sailors for two days of
racing, will taking place at CYC. Regatta
Chairman Sam Haythorn and the CYC race
committee are sure to put on a great event.
During the last week of the month
there are several activities to choose
among. The Power Fleet will be hosting
the Junior Blind for their annual Fishing
Trip. All CYC members are invited to join
in pairing with a Junior Blind fisherman
for a morning of fishing on a commercial
fishing boat. It is an experience you won’t
forget. Contact George Etter if you have
interest in participating. The second Pool
Cocktail Party and Kids movie night is
slated for Friday the 26th, followed by the
Power Fleet Dinner Dance, themed
“Margaritaville,” on the 27th. With a live
steel band, island food and specialty
drinks, a build-your-own-margarita bar and
music by parrot head DJ Scott Jarema, this
is sure to be a great party.
For families planning to attend the
Family Cruise this summer, the dates have
been changed to accommodate the
USODA Pacific Coast Championships.
The new date is August 2-4, so grab the
kids and plan on cruising over to the
Isthmus for a weekend of family fun.
Cruise Chairman Mike Shocklee has
promised good weather and lots of
activities, so give the front desk a call and
make your reservation.
