PROPOSED DRAFT ST<strong>AND</strong>ARD FOR THE LABELLING OF <strong>AND</strong> CLAIMS FOR<br />
PREPACKGED <strong>FOOD</strong>S CLAIMED TO BE SUITABLE FOR INCORPORATION IN A<br />
PRESCRIBED DIETARY REGIMEN FOR DIABETICS<br />
1. SCOPE<br />
This standard applies to the labelling of all those foods for special dietary uses,<br />
as defined in the General Standard for the Labelling of and Claims for Prepackaged<br />
Foods for Special Dietary Uses, which are claimed to be suitable for incorporation in a<br />
prescribed dietary regimen for diabetics, and to claims made for such foods.<br />
2. DEFINITION OF TERMS<br />
For the purpose of this standard:<br />
2.1 Diabetics are those diabetic individuals who have been advised, by a qualified<br />
person, that particular prepackaged foods specifically modified for diabetics and<br />
marketed for this purpose, may be included in their dietary regimen within the limits<br />
prescribed by the qualified person.<br />
2.2 Qualified Person means a medically qualified person or other person<br />
appropriately authorized to advise diabetics regarding their dietary regimen as part of the<br />
treatment and control of their diabetes.<br />
2.3 Prescribed Dietary Regimen is that dietary regimen prescribed by a qualified<br />
person to meet the specific nutritional requirements of an individual diabetic.<br />
2.4 Carbohydrates means metabolisable carbohydrates and include nutritive<br />
sweeteners and starches.<br />
2.5 Nutritive Sweeteners are those sugars, except fructose, which are defined by the<br />
Codex Alimentarius Commission and "glucoplastic" sugar substitutes.<br />
2.6 "Glucoplastic" Sugar Substitutes are substances such as sorbitol, mannitol,<br />
xylitol and other polyols, and fructose which are intended to replace glucose, sucrose<br />
and other glucose containing low molecular weight carbohydrates.<br />
2.7 Non-nutritive Sweeteners are sweetening substances which are not utilized in the<br />
metabolism as a source of energy or which are contributing only a negligible amount of<br />
energy as normally consumed.<br />
3. M<strong>AND</strong>ATORY LABELLING<br />
3.1 Foods to which this standard applies shall be labelled in conformity with the<br />
General Standard for the Labelling of and Claims for Prepackaged Foods for Special<br />
Dietary Uses, except that the condition for which the food is intended may be stated in<br />
close proximity to the name of the food, provided that it is accompanied by the following<br />
statement, or some similar statement:<br />
"May be suitable for diabetics, subject to advice from a qualified person".<br />
3.2 The following additional material shall also be shown on the labels of foods to<br />
which this standard applies:<br />
3.2.1 Sugar substitutes and non-nutritive sweeteners shall be identified in the List of<br />
Ingredients by their specific names together with the appropriate classname in brackets<br />
in descending order of proportion.
