Traps for Insects, Snails & Slugs
These are attracted to liquids containing yeasts. Place stale
beer in a deep plate/container. Snails and slugs will crawl
into the liquid and drown.
Grasshoppers are attracted to different kinds of scents
including citrus fruits, lemon extracts, beer, vinegar, etc.
Moths are attracted to a light source, so place a candle in a bottle and
place in a tray of water to which a little liquid soap has been added. The
moths fl y towards the light at night and drown in the water. This is an effective
method of controlling cutworm adults.
Aloe ferox (Bitter Aloe)
Effective for the control of insects, including termites.
1. Crush 1 part plant material (leaves) to 5 parts water.
2. Boil and cool before spraying onto the crop.
Alternatively:
1. Dry the plant material (sun dry or place in a convection oven).
2. Grind the dried material into a powder and dust it onto the plants.
Amaranthus (Pigweed)
Effective for the control of various fungi.
1. Extract the juice from 1kg of leaves (by placing in a blender).
2. Mix the juice with 3 litres of water.
3. Spray over the crop.
Bidens pilosa (Blackjack)
Effective against most insects, including aphids, ants, beetles, caterpillars, mites,
termites and whitefl y.
1. Use the entire plant (note mature seeds are most effective).
2. Boil a cup of seeds for ten minutes in water. Allow to cool. Alternatively
allow the seeds to soak in water for 24 hours.
3. Add 1 litre of water and a large spoonful of fi nely chopped soap to the
mixture.
4. Filter the liquid through a cloth to remove large particles.
5. Spray onto the crop immediately.
Ricinus communis (Castor Oil Bush)
Effective against a variety of insects and fungi. Insects: aphids, leaf-cutting ants,
caterpillars, cutworms, mites, stinkbugs, termites, nematodes and storage insect
pests. It is also known to work against mole rats and rats if the green seeds are
put down mole rat holes and or into rat nests.
1. Soak the leaves, roots and green seeds in water for 24 hours.
2. Filter the liquid through a cloth.
