DAVID CHIppERFIELD
out of the series MY LIFE / MA VIE
by Sabine Carbon PORTRAIT | ARCHITECTURE
With his unique state-of-the-art interpretation of traditional
values, David Chipperfield is one of the most successful and
impressive architects working today. The former disciple of Sir
Norman Foster and Richard Rogers operates offices in London,
Milan, Shanghai and Berlin. His radical concept of integrating
modern architecture and traces of wartime destruction into the
restoration of the flamboyant 19th century 'Neues Museum' on
Berlin's famed Museum Island garnered both praise and fierce
criticism alike. Chipperfield's aim is to unite architecture and life. To this end, the English architect
spends his summer holidays in his self-built summer home in Spain, where everything caters to the
well-being of his family and their large circle of friends.
DAVID WANTS TO FLY
by David Sieveking PORTRAIT | FILM | PERSONAL POINT OF VIEW
The young filmmaker David Sieveking follows the path of his
professional idol, David Lynch, into the world of Transcendental
Meditation (TM). It is a journey that leads him to the
movement's founder, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the one-time guru
of the Beatles. By the time he died 2008, Maharishi had expanded
TM into a global conglomerate and offering courses that
promised world peace and yogic flying.
How does this chime with the somber films of David Lynch?
Inspired by his idol, the young director Sieveking starts to meditate, too, submerging himself ever
deeper in the strange world of TM. In doing so he gets a look into more than just his own abyss.
DAY OF THE SPARROW is a political wildlife documentary. It tells the story of a country where the
border between war and peace is disappearing. On November 14th, 2005 a sparrow is shot dead in
Leeuwarden, and in Kabul a German soldier dies. These competing headlines are the starting point for
director Philip Scheffner, to trace the war using the methods of an ornithologist.
On his journey through Germany, the camera circuits a reality of the war – by capturing images of
apparent peace. Dialogue fragments are wafting through deserted landscapes. Birds remain in the
focus, becoming our guides to hidden places where the war is produced. And then, a sudden change
of perspective: An arrest takes place on a Brandenburg country lane. The birdwatchers themselves
become the targets of observation.
