to this point? What is going on behind the scenes of health
care system? Who is pulling the strings? „The Patient as Prey“
illuminates on many levels the web that doctors, pharmaceutical
concerns, politicians and investors spin around the ill and sick. In a multi billion business, the patient
becomes the pawn, the expense, the prey.
The documentary attempts to unravel some knots of the enormous health care web. Carefully researched
case stories uncover long term strategies and motives of the health system’s different players
– and how they carry out their struggle at the cost of those who can not fight back: the patients.

Robert from Boston, eight years old, is one of seventeen million
children worldwide who take antipsychotic and psycho stimulant
medications daily. He has been diagnosed “bipolar” by Dr
Doyle from the Massachusetts General Hospital, at the age of
three. Since then, he is under medication. “Psychotropic Kids”
accompanies children on antipsychotic medication.
It shows in a very sensitive way, how the pills influence kids like
Robert, or the five year old Marc-André from Berlin, who suffers
from ADHD. The parents of these children are stuck between a rock and a hard place: the medication
helps their kids to calm down but nobody knows how it really influences their brains. If the effects of
these drugs aren’t really tested yet, why are millions of children on it? And who really benefits from
the fortune that worried parents spend on the pills that should calm down their children?
“Psychotropic Kids” tries to enlighten this dark field of medicine…
