Based out of the Adult and Continuing Education Office and the Art Department<br />

This program offers art classes on sculpture, cast and handmade paper, watercolors, and organic<br />

abstraction for high school students. Most of the participants will come from <strong>Illinois</strong> High Schools.<br />

They do operate a “closed campus” for their participants.<br />

BADMINTON CAMP-<br />

Based out of the Physical Education Department<br />

Teaches fundamentals for Badminton. Most participants (co-ed) will be athletes from the Midwest.<br />

BASEBALL CAMP-<br />

Teaches fundamentals of Baseball. Most participants (male) will be students from area High School<br />

Baseball Teams.<br />

Teaches fundamentals for basketball and allows for team tournament play. This is where high school<br />

The Concept of Boys State originated in <strong>Illinois</strong> and <strong>Illinois</strong> Boys State is the oldest youth leadership<br />

training program in America. The National organization of the American Legion has adopted the plan<br />

and it is now in operation in all fifty states. Boys State provides the experience, opportunity and<br />

organization to teach young men citizenship and workings of the government. Friendships are<br />

developed, new interests are found, and ordinary people begin to do extraordinary things.<br />

GIRLS STATE-<br />

Based out of the American Legion Auxiliary<br />

The American Legion Auxiliary believes that training our youth about the basic ideals and principles of<br />

our system of government will help to ensure the survival of our republic. Through a unique<br />

citizenship training program, Auxiliary members teach the youth of our nation to understand,<br />

comprehend, and appreciate their roles as United States citizens. This program is called Girls State.<br />

Girls State began as one and two day sessions in the late 1930's and since 1948 has been a regular<br />

part of the Auxiliary's Americanism curriculum. The program has grown from a few hundred<br />

participants to nearly 25,000 Girls State delegates annually. The Auxiliary has been recognized many<br />

times by Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania and the National Association of<br />

Secondary School Principles (NASSP) for outstanding Girls State and Girls Nation programs.<br />

HIGH SCHOOL JOURNALISM CAMP-<br />

2 Week Educational program designed for high school students with an interest in journalism.<br />

Participants attend various workshops and classes regarding journalism. Participants are usually from<br />

<strong>Illinois</strong>.<br />

KANKAKEE COMMUNITY COLLEGE UPWARD BOUND- 18 YEARS AT EIU<br />

Based out of Kankakee, <strong>Illinois</strong><br />

This program provides educational opportunities for high school students (mostly juniors and seniors)<br />

to help bridge the transition from high school to college. The students will attend classes on campus<br />

just like undergraduate students experience during the summer months. Most participants will come<br />

from the Kankakee area. KCC hires and provides their own staff. Most of the staff is comprised of<br />

students from <strong>Eastern</strong> <strong>Illinois</strong> <strong>University</strong>. Program lasts 6 weeks.

Marching Auxiliaries is a national organization that hosts camps across the country. They teach<br />

junior high and high school students the skills that are needed to be in a flag corp, marching band<br />

color guard, or drum major.<br />

The Music <strong>Camp</strong>s Office in the Music Department provides two different music camps during three<br />

weeks in July. Junior High and High School students from across the nation come to learn<br />

techniques in percussion, show choir, jazz, vocals, and band. The Music <strong>Camp</strong>s provide their own<br />

staff. These camps will also bring in a great deal of faculty or performers that are sometimes<br />

famous.

MTIEP stands for the Minority Teacher Identification Enrichment Program. This program helps<br />

minority students in creating interest and developing skills and knowledge to become teachers or<br />

professors. These students attend many classes and workshops on the subject during a one week<br />

program. Participants are usually from the <strong>Illinois</strong> area.<br />

NATIONAL CHEERLEADEING ASSOCIATION-<br />

Based out of Dallas, Texas<br />

NCA is a very popular cheerleading camp which has professional cheerleading staff that teaches<br />

cheerleading fundamentals to junior high and high school cheerleaders. This is a national<br />

cheerleading camp with camps across the nation throughout the summers. Most of the participants<br />

will come from <strong>Illinois</strong> & Indiana.<br />

PEKIN MARCHING BAND-<br />

UCA is the most popular cheerleading camp which has professional cheerleading staff that teaches<br />

cheerleading fundamentals to junior high and high school cheerleaders. This is an international<br />

cheerleading camp with camps across the nation throughout the summers. Most of the participants<br />

will come from <strong>Illinois</strong>. You will see UCA in the Macy’s Day Parade every Thanksgiving in New York<br />

City.<br />

UNIV. OF ILLINOIS UPWARD BOUND-<br />

16 YEARS AT EIU<br />

Based out of the Minority Affairs Office at the <strong>University</strong> of <strong>Illinois</strong><br />

Dr. Sandra Kato-Wright<br />

The <strong>University</strong> of <strong>Illinois</strong> Upward Bound will come to EIU for one night to visit the EIU campus. They<br />

will also attend campus tours and attend a presentation by our admissions office.<br />
