Administering medication Administering medication to animals may require handling. Users must specifically refer to the Animal Handling section. All medications and how they are administered must be approved by the animal welfare application when using animals that come under the animal ethics guidelines. Medication must only be administered by trained personnel. Prior to administration of medication, ensure you have a quiet location and all equipment required eg. Appropriate gauge needles, alcohol swabs, collection vials, sharps bin, protective clothing Analgesic and Anti-inflammatory drugs used in Reptiles Drug Dose and route Comments Butorphanol 0.4 – 2.0 mg/kg IM, SC q12h 0.2-2.0 mg/kg IM Low dose in debilitated 0.2-0.5 mg/kg IV, IO chelonians Lasts 4 hours Contraindicated in chelonians with head trauma Buprenorphine 0.005 -0.02 mg/kg IM q24-48h 0.10-1.0 mg/kg IM Low dose in debilitated chelonians Lasts 4 hours Carprofen Initial dose 2-4 mg/kg Maintenance dose 1-2 mg/kg IV,IM,SC.PO q24-72h 1-4 mg/kg IV,IM,SC.PO q24h Rehydrate chelonians before administration Follow with ½ dose at 24 hours Maximum treatment duration 3-5 days Flunixin meglumine 0.1-0.5 mg/kg IM q24h (2-3d) Causes gastric ulcers/enteritis in sea turtles 1-2 mg/kg IM q24h X2 Rx post op for lizards Ketoprofen 2 mg/kg IM, SC q24-48h Meloxicam 0.1-0.3 mg/kg IV, IM, SC, PO q24-48h 0.2-0.4 mg/kg IV,IM,SC,PO Rehydrate chelonians before administration. Maximum treatment 3-5 days Meloxicam/Metacam (commonly used in ACU for lizards) can be given orally at a rate of 0.013ml per 100g or by subcutaneous injection at a rate of 0.004ml/100g Dilution of 1ml of Meloxicam (aquaeous preparation for injection) in 9ml of sterile saline is useful in smaller lizards as it allows a more easily measureable volume to be administered.
