Eddie McKay, 78 years old. Drumry House I lived in Partick as a child. I lived in a tenement in Partick as a boy. There were always lots of kids around to play with. Football was my game. Each street used to have their own team and we’d play against each other. Sometimes you got into trouble for playing football in the street. Where else could we play? You used to play in the close and as you got bigger you were allowed to venture further. I would play Ludo and Snakes and Ladders with my family and my favourite toys were my train set, my football and my lead soldiers. When we played outside it was usually our pals from the street. We had tow sets of pals, street pals and school pals because we all went to different schools. A lot of our toys were homemade or second hand, but nobody cared. As long as we had bikes we could go off all day and sometimes we’d go camping in Yorkhill Park and spend the whole summer up there. We would tie doors together and chap the doors all the way down the close, leaving only one untied. What a laugh! Another game we played with the girls was ‘chase, catch and kiss!’ That was good fun. There were always card games on the go and I would hide my winnings in my shoe so no one could find it. I still do! 36
Betty Crawford When Betty was younger she used to play tennis balls against the wall. She said that they weren’t allowed to play after 9 o’clock because the men gave us into trouble because of the noise and they had work to go to. She also played skipping ropes out in the street with her friends but can’t remember any of the songs. She used to have a teddy, which was her favourite, and the other weans got a doll and then as time went on they got more like a pram and doll. She never went to the Girl Guides but her boys went to the Boys’ Brigade. She went on a Sunday school trip down Ayrshire way. 37
