Family History : The old Styrian family can show documents, mentioning their name, that
go back to 1150. Generally, it starts its history from 1240. A feudal family, they became
Counts of the Empire, in 1643, confirmed in Bohemia. In 1765, the head of the Starhembergs
became a prince, in Bohemia, immediately confirmed for the Holy Roman Empire as a whole.
The main branch, however, died out in 1860 but authorisation was issued for the title ( on a
male primogeniture basis ) to pass to the next branch. In 1825, the prized accolade of Serene
Highness was accorded.
