Principal Title : H.S.H. Prince von Schaumburg-Lippe.
Creation : Recognition 1807.
Subsidiary Titles : Noble Lord of Lippe, Count of Schwalenberg and Sternberg.
Family Name : Schaumburg-Lippe.
Family History : This branch of the Lippe family goes back to Philipp (1601-1681), Count
and Noble Lord of Lippe. He inherited, through his sister, parts of the old county/principality
of Schaumburg but abandoned parts to the Duke of Brunswick-Luneburg and the Landgrave
of Hesse-Cassel. He had two sons, the first took Schaumburg, the second founded the
branch of Lippe-Alverdissen. The elder line died out and descendance went to the younger,
with Philipp-Ernst II of Lippe-Alverdissen.
His son, Georg (1784-1860) assumed the title of Prince of Schaumburg-Lippe and
Sternberg. His territories acquired sovereign status in 1806; the following year, the head of
the family was recognised as Prince von Schaumburg-Lippe. Dissolution of its sovereignty
came in 1918. The son of Georg, Adolph, left three daughters from his marriage to a
Waldeck-Pyrmont princess, and a son Georg II (1846-1911). This line continues.
Since Schaumburg was, technically at least, a sovereign territory, the shield of the
family is often surmounted by a royal crown. Members are addressed as Prince or Princess of
Schaumburg-Lippe, with the prefix of Serene Highness. Membership of the family, though,
depends on the consent of the Prince.
