Current research projects: The logic of civil society in new democracies (Hungary, Poland, South Korea and Taiwan) (collaborative with colleagues from US, Central Europe and East Asia). This collaborative project is a rigorous empirical study of the civil society development and its impact on the quality of democracy in newly democratized states. It focuses on civil society’s structure, its activities and their evolution in four countries (Hungary, Poland, South Korea and Taiwan) and covers over a twenty-year period, since the democratic breakthrough until 2010 in each case. A uniform methodology is employed in all four countries to ensure maximum comparability of the information collected. Event analysis, the project’s principal method, is explicitly designed to capture the dynamism of civil society’s actions and their effects on other domains of the polity. The influence of civil society’s actions on the quality of democracy is tested against competing theories that emphasize the role of economic performance, political culture, and institutional design. Our data show a striking diversity in patterns of civil society development and its impact on democracy. Interestingly, these patterns do not conform to regional boundaries. Data collection is completed for South Korea, Poland and Hungary and is almost done in Taiwan. The first workshop of project participants took place at the Center for European Studies at Harvard University in June 2008 and the second in 2009 in Taipei and the final one in Seoul in 2012. Political geographies and political economies of postcommunist Europe (single author book project). This project is designed to examine the patterns of postcommunist transformations and to evaluate scholarly debates and theories explaining trajectories of transformations developed in comparative politics and political sociology since 1989.
