Our Kayak HD and HD-upgradeable Kayak SD switcher lines are
powerful, multiformat members of the popular Kayak family installed
in thousands of facilities worldwide. Designed for broadcasters and
professional users in live and studio settings, Kayak is perfect for those
who need a high-performance solution at an affordable price.
The architecture of the Kayak switcher family makes it highly flexible.
The Kayak family includes 14 affordable systems and 10 mainframe
models designed for live production, small corporate studios, and
editing applications in environments requiring HD and/or SD production
capabilities. These switchers feature a compact design, superior image
quality, and a number of features not found in any other manufacturer’s
products.
To provide an even greater range of control solutions, Grass Valley has
applied powerful new Kayenne technology to the Kayak HD family by
pairing the Kayak HD video processing frame with the optional Kayenne
XL control panel.
If you’re working in SD today but need an affordable, easy transition
to HD tomorrow, you can convert a Kayak SD model to a multiformat
Kayak HD model via a straightforward software upgrade. Adding a
Kayenne XL control panel then provides access to a new set of features.

Video processing frame
The Kayak HD video processing
frame comes in two sizes: the
compact 4 RU and the standard
8 RU, with up to 96 inputs and 48
mappable outputs. All inputs and
outputs are usable anywhere in the
switcher. The 4 RU frame supports
1 M/E to 2.5 M/Es. The 8 RU frame
supports 2 M/Es to 4.5 M/Es, plus
an optional expansion DPM with
four video/key channels.

The half M/E, when enabled, provides linear/luminance keyers,
cuts, and mixes. Often used as a PGM/PST row with DSKs, the
half M/E may be delegated to any row on the panel. Optionally, the
four keyers can be configured as DSKs placed downstream of any
full M/E.
Kayak’s full networking capabilities allow multiple control panels
to share resources in one video processing frame. Kayak panels
include an intuitive GUI with an integrated touchscreen display for
easy operation.

Control panel
Kayak control panels are available in 1 M/E, 1.5 M/E, 2 M/E,
2.5 M/E, and 3 M/E versions to meet the needs of a range
of production environments. Panels of 1.5 M/E and above
feature mnemonic source displays on each M/E for easy input
identification; the 3 M/E panels feature source displays on
each M/E and program row. Control of up to 4.5 M/Es in a
single frame is accomplished via multiple control panels or M/E
delegation. The Kayenne XL panel, available in 1 M/E, 2 M/E,
3 M/E, and 4 M/E configurations, affords operators an enhanced
level of access and control.

Six Keyers per M/E
4
Kayak provides the option for loading up to six keyers in
every M/E. Each full M/E delivers four full-function keyers
(standard), including preset patterns, wipes, borders,
optional chroma keys, and more—plus two optional linear/
luminance keyers. The half M/E has four linear/luminance
keyers for a total of 28 keyers in one 4.5 M/E switcher.
Each full-function keyer has one page (frame) of video/key
storage. These frame stores can be used for non-animated
bugs, graphics, and other single-frame images.
Individual M/Es also contain two main wipe generators and
four keyer wipe generators with access to an internal test
signal generator and five background generators. These
backgrounds include black, white, and three dual-color
sources.
FlexiKey programmable clean feed
The FlexiKey programmable clean-feed system is a valuable
tool that supports multi-client live programming, with up
to four outputs per M/E. With FlexiKey, video production
professionals can use any combination of up to six keys over
backgrounds on every M/E.

High-end DVE capacity
Kayak HD delivers up to 20 video/key channels of DPM.
Each full-function keyer can have an integrated DPM
(iDPM). Grass Valley remains the only company with a
system capable of accommodating four integrated, fullfeatured
iDPMs in each full M/E, for a total of 16 iDPMs in
a 4 M/E or 4.5 M/E switcher.
The 8 RU system goes a step further, offering an additional
four independent channels of expansion DPMs (eDPMs)
in the video processing frame. The many optional effects
available for Kayak include:

User-friendly effects toolset
In addition to up to 96 macros, 100 iDPM registers are available
per M/E. eDPMs also have 100 registers. Operators also benefit
from access to 100 E-MEM registers per M/E, as well as 100
Master E-MEM registers, all with Define Memo. The Define
Memo menu stores and recalls multiple switcher functions in
an E-MEM snapshot or timeline. Individual functions such as
keyers, backgrounds, and others can be enabled or disabled on
a keyframe-by-keyframe basis.

MultiMix and Offset Transitions
To simplify your transition to HD production, all Kayak
HD models are able to use mixed-format and non-sync
sources. By leveraging its MatchDef and SetDef options,
Kayak HD can internally up/down/crossconvert up to 16
inputs and 8 outputs without tying up any M/E resources.
SetDef also provides simultaneous HD and SD outputs.
Combining conversion with the FlexiKey option provides
a solution for multiple feeds, which can include different
graphics for each converted output appropriate for
different aspect ratios.
MultiMix transitions give operators the versatility to use
different transition types on each keyer and the background in
the same transition. The RAMRecorder clip playback and both
the internal and external DVE channels can become transition
elements as well.
Offset Transitions can be used in conjunction with MultiMix.
With an intuitive GUI interface, Offset Transitions allow
operators to change the timing and duration of each transition
element to coordinate and simplify otherwise complicated
timeline effects.

RAMRecorder with
KacheBack technology
Grass Valley’s KacheBack technology equips operators
to quickly archive or restore RAMRecorder content to
and from any external record device in real time. With
up to 8 GB, the RAMRecorder works with stills and clips,
delivering six input and output channels. This pioneering
feature enables video production professionals to record
video, key, and audio together or independently and
combine all three into a single clip.
To maximize the approximately one minute of HD storage
capacity, audio channels may be shifted against video
and the Active-Area feature of the RAMRecorder allows
operators to reduce memory usage by defining the area
of the raster to be captured or played back, as with an
animated logo in the corner of the screen.

Aux Bus Dissolves
In addition to performing cuts, aux bus dissolves give operators
greater production freedom and flexibility. Dissolves on aux
buses can be used when feeding on-set monitors.
Extensive machine control
The Kayak switcher family provides extensive machine control
choices. All protocols are standard, including Jupiter, ESAM,
VDCP, Odetics, BVW, AMP, ACOS, etc.
YUV and RGB color correction
YUV color correction is standard on every bus on full M/E
keyers and backgrounds and on all switcher outputs. RGB color
correction is an option on each input, every bus, and on all aux
bus outputs.

Grass Valley has applied its powerful Kayenne technology to the Kayak HD family by
pairing its Kayak HD video processing frame with the Kayenne XL control panel. This
Kayenne XL package provides access to a new set of high-end features for Kayak HD
users, while dramatically raising the bar for serviceability, versatility, and ease of use.
To get TDs quickly up to speed, the Kayenne XL control panel has buttons and a menu
system evolved from the popular XtenDD and Kayak families. Production professionals
accustomed to the Kayak HD workflow will be able to immediately utilize its power.

KAYENNE XL PANEL FEATURES

Modular, ergonomic control panel
The Kayenne XL modular control panel is designed with the user in mind, providing
instant access to a range of new features engineered to meet the needs of
operators in high-end, multiformat video production environments.
The panel’s elegantly structured modular design establishes a new standard
for serviceability. Each module snaps into an extruded aluminium tray and is hotswappable.
Modules can be removed and replaced quickly, without impacting
on‐air production, for improved ease of service.
Ergonomically designed, the Kayenne XL control panel can be mounted flat or in
a banked curve with selected M/E stripes angled toward the user. This facilitates
easy button access and enables installers to adapt the panel to the unique needs
of their particular production environment. No other competitive switcher offers this
flexibility.
The Kayenne XL panel is available in 1 M/E, 2 M/E, 3 M/E, and 4 M/E configurations,
expanding the available options and providing a larger panel for Kayak HD systems.

Advanced operator interface
The Kayenne XL control panel includes a superbly structured widescreen menu
system, which is accessed through a new 15-inch, high-resolution, 1280x768
pixel touchscreen. To make operation even easier, the enhanced SidePanel menu
provides a navigation pane for quick access to the most recently used menus.
The control panel provides two rows of OLED source name displays per M/E,
including two sets of customizable names per row (one for each button row)
with wide viewing angles, high contrast ratios, and crisp legibility. The OLED
displays deliver myriad benefits, from the helpful source names, to the ability to
identify macros, E-MEMs, router control, aux bus control, and more. The new
Panel Memory feature helps operators place functions where they’re needed when
they’re needed, with the unique capability to delegate different functions to the
source buttons rows.
Finally, to boost control and ease of use, the Kayenne XL panel offers a split-lever arm,
which in addition to supporting basic transition requirements, enables precise manual
control of E-MEM and DPM timelines.

Extensive use of RGB push buttons

ENHANCED USER TOOLSET
All buttons on the Kayenne XL panel are illuminated RGB color
buttons. In addition to simplifying M/E row and key identification,
the colors can organize functions such as macros, E-MEMs, and
router and aux bus controls for immediate recognition. Such
versatility offers a distinct advantage over simple button labels in
environments where each M/E and its associated subpanels have
only one fixed color. Many panel buttons can be set to a defined
color if the user prefers.
The Kayenne XL panel offers enhanced access to a variety of
switcher resources. This includes an optional Device Control
Module and delegation of router crosspoints along with E-MEM
registers to source select rows. Background buses may also
be delegated to Keyer source select rows.
P-MEM panel memory keeps track of preferred delegation
setups and 1,000 macros provide instant playback access.
The RGB buttons change color on delegation to visually indicate
functionality for greater security, speed, and ease of operation.
Delivering unparalleled improvement in organization and customization,
the Kayenne XL panel also provides “soft” buttons whose functionality
is indicated by four-character LED displays. The soft button labels
adapt to delegation and add flexibility for modules with multiple
functions.
Features can be added as needed with new software—without requiring
a new panel or keycaps, thereby saving valuable time and expense.

QUIET AND GREEN
With the Kayenne XL package, operators enjoy a silent
work environment as all processing and fans have been
removed from the panel and placed in a Panel Control Unit
(PCU) which can be positioned in a rack up to 15 meters
away.
