The Great Lake Taupö region is situated right in the
centre of the North Island on the dramatic Central
Plateau, a few hours drive from the main cities of the
North Island. It is a region of contrasts where you’ll find
snow capped mountains and volcanic peaks, the largest
freshwater lake in Australasia, pristine native bush,
steaming thermal areas and the Tongariro National Park,
one of the world’s only Dual World Heritage Parks.
The landscape lends itself to all kinds of activities,
from the high adrenaline rush of tandem skydiving, to
bushwalking, waterskiing or simply relaxing by the lake
with a good book.
TAUPÖ (P8)
Centrally located on State Highway 1, Taupö is situated
on the shores of Australasia’s largest fresh water lake.
Taupö is the main township of the Great Lake Taupö
region with a population of around 23,000. Well known
as a popular holiday destination, this town really knows
how to turn it on for visitors. With an inspiring range
of outdoor recreational activities to choose from, any
visitor is spoilt for choice. Home to several international
golf courses, a choice of jet boating experiences on the
Waikato River, hot thermal mineral pools, adrenaline
adventure options, great charter fishing experiences,
family fun experiences and great bush walking and
mountain biking tracks, this destination offers the true
kiwi experience. Many weekends find events being staged
in this dynamic township, whether it be motor racing
or triathlon, an art exhibition or concert, there will be

TURANGI (P46)
Located at the southern end of the lake, on the banks
of the wonderful Tongariro River, Turangi and its
surrounding countryside offers fantastic trout fishing,
challenging hunting, hiking or leisurely bushwalks, sight
seeing and much more. Turangi is the tourist gateway to
the Tongariro World Heritage Park, Kaimanawa Forest
Park, Pureroa Forest Park, the Mt Ruapehu ski fields and
the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Turangi is your adventure
centre. Whether you’re looking for sightseeing or
mountain-climbing Turangi is your perfect base to explore
the spectacular Central Plateau.
MANGAKINO (P56)
This peaceful lakeside village borders the western shores
of Lake Maraetai and is surrounded by forest and rolling
farmland. It’s perfect for anyone seeking tranquility and
also for those who enjoy outdoor adventure. It’s the
perfect base for hiking, mountain biking and all water
sports, or for exploring surrounding areas - Taupö,
Rotorua and Waitomo are all less than an hour away.
RUAPEHU (P60)
An hour south of Taupö lies some of New Zealand’s most
diverse landscapes - deserts, mountains, lakes, pristine
rivers, active volcanoes, rich farm land and native flora and
fauna. The Tongariro National Park / Mt Ruapehu region
is home to this country’s largest ski-fields and the world
famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing.
