The Great <strong>Lake</strong> Taupö region is situated right in the<br />
centre of the North Island on the dramatic Central<br />
Plateau, a few hours drive from the main cities of the<br />
North Island. It is a region of contrasts where you’ll find<br />
snow capped mountains and volcanic peaks, the largest<br />
freshwater lake in Australasia, pristine native bush,<br />
steaming thermal areas and the Tongariro National Park,<br />
one of the world’s only Dual World Heritage Parks.<br />
The landscape lends itself to all kinds of activities,<br />
from the high adrenaline rush of tandem skydiving, to<br />
bushwalking, waterskiing or simply relaxing by the lake<br />
with a good book.<br />
<strong>TAUPÖ</strong> (P8)<br />
Centrally located on State Highway 1, Taupö is situated<br />
on the shores of Australasia’s largest fresh water lake.<br />
Taupö is the main township of the Great <strong>Lake</strong> Taupö<br />
region with a population of around 23,000. Well known<br />
as a popular holiday destination, this town really knows<br />
how to turn it on for visitors. With an inspiring range<br />
of outdoor recreational activities to choose from, any<br />
visitor is spoilt for choice. Home to several international<br />
golf courses, a choice of jet boating experiences on the<br />
Waikato River, hot thermal mineral pools, adrenaline<br />
adventure options, great charter fishing experiences,<br />
family fun experiences and great bush walking and<br />
mountain biking tracks, this destination offers the true<br />
kiwi experience. Many weekends find events being staged<br />
in this dynamic township, whether it be motor racing<br />
or triathlon, an art exhibition or concert, there will be<br />
something happening to suit most tastes.<br />
TURANGI (P46)<br />
Located at the southern end of the lake, on the banks<br />
of the wonderful Tongariro River, Turangi and its<br />
surrounding countryside offers fantastic trout fishing,<br />
challenging hunting, hiking or leisurely bushwalks, sight<br />
seeing and much more. Turangi is the tourist gateway to<br />
the Tongariro World Heritage Park, Kaimanawa Forest<br />
Park, Pureroa Forest Park, the Mt Ruapehu ski fields and<br />
the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Turangi is your adventure<br />
centre. Whether you’re looking for sightseeing or<br />
mountain-climbing Turangi is your perfect base to explore<br />
the spectacular Central Plateau.<br />
MANGAKINO (P56)<br />
This peaceful lakeside village borders the western shores<br />
of <strong>Lake</strong> Maraetai and is surrounded by forest and rolling<br />
farmland. It’s perfect for anyone seeking tranquility and<br />
also for those who enjoy outdoor adventure. It’s the<br />
perfect base for hiking, mountain biking and all water<br />
sports, or for exploring surrounding areas - Taupö,<br />
Rotorua and Waitomo are all less than an hour away.<br />
RUAPEHU (P60)<br />
An hour south of Taupö lies some of New Zealand’s most<br />
diverse landscapes - deserts, mountains, lakes, pristine<br />
rivers, active volcanoes, rich farm land and native flora and<br />
fauna. The Tongariro National Park / Mt Ruapehu region<br />
is home to this country’s largest ski-fields and the world<br />
famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing.<br />
