• Scenic Flights – One of the best ways to see the<br />

stunning Central Plateau is from the air. Take a scenic<br />

flight from Whakapapa, Turangi or Taupö and get<br />

a unique perspective on the mountains of Tongariro<br />

National Park, the Kaimanawa Ranges and beautiful<br />

<strong>Lake</strong> Taupö.<br />

• Volcanic Touring Loop – For an easy half day activity<br />

take a drive from Turangi around the volanic loop.<br />

This journey takes in the spectacular volcanic<br />

landscapes of the dual World Heritage Tongariro<br />

National Park and stunning views of its mountains-<br />

Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu.<br />

• Birdwatching – There is significant birdlife to be found<br />

in the Turangi area. Around the wetlands on the shores<br />

of <strong>Lake</strong> Taupö you can find Pukeko, Bitterns, Shags,<br />

a variety of Duck species, Pied Stilts and Banded Rail,<br />

to name a few; and around the rivers you will find Whio<br />

(native Blue Duck), Kereru, Tui, Fantail and other forest<br />

birds.<br />

ADVENTURE<br />

If it’s white water action you seek or a selection of<br />

stunning mountain bike tracks or rock faces fit for<br />

climbing, check out what’s on offer within close proximity<br />

to Turangi.<br />

LEISURE<br />

If you prefer the more laid-back approach, Turangi<br />

is a centre for any number of relaxing activities such as<br />

bushwalking, swimming in our pristine lake and rivers or<br />

soaking in thermal hot pools. The Aquatic Centre and<br />

indoor climbing wall provide great fun for the whole<br />

FISHING AND CRUISING<br />

Turangi is world renowned for trout fishing and is located<br />

right on the backs of the famous Tongariro River.<br />

Whether you’re a well seasoned fisherman or just a healthy<br />

enthusiast waiting to give it a go – try your hand at trout<br />

fishing in Turangi. A trout fishing guide is recommended<br />

and the fishing shops or the local i-SITE nearby have all the<br />

information you need. A fishing licence is essential.<br />

Cost: $8 per child, which includes a 24 hour Taupö<br />

Fisheries licence.<br />

Advanced fly casting lessons are available on the day<br />

at 11am and 1pm. Cost $10 per child, $15 per adult,<br />

recommended for children 8 years and over and adults.<br />

Food and refreshments are available on site. A great day<br />

out! Bookings essential.<br />

5 TOP WALKS<br />

1. <strong>Lake</strong> Rotopounamu (2hrs) – Track begins in the<br />

carpark which is signposted, 11km from Turangi off<br />

SH47.<br />

2. Tongariro River Loop Track (1 hr) – Track begins at<br />

the SH1 bridge or the Major Jones footbridge, Koura<br />

St, Turangi.<br />

3. Tongariro River Walkway (3hrs return) – Begins at<br />

Major Jones footbridge, Koura St, Turangi; or Red Hut<br />

footbridge, 5km south of Turangi off SH1.<br />

4. Tokaanu Thermal Walk (20mins loop) – Begins at the<br />

Tokaanu Thermal Pools Complex (6km from Turangi on<br />

SH41)<br />

5. Tongariro National Trout Centre River Walk<br />

(30mins loop) – 5km south of Turangi off SH1.<br />

GETTING TO TURANGI<br />

Turangi is located on SH1, approx 50km south of Taupö,<br />

and is the gateway to the <strong>Lake</strong> Taupö region and<br />

Tongariro National Park if travelling from the south.<br />

BY LAND – The best way to travel to and explore Turangi<br />

is by car. Alternatively, Turangi is easily accessible by bus<br />

and is on the main coach routes.<br />

BY AIR – The closest domestic airport is in Taupö. Hire a<br />
