4 Eneco<br />

4.1 Basic company <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

Eneco Hold<strong>in</strong>g N.V. is a non-listed public limited liability company with its official seat <strong>in</strong><br />

Rotterdam. Eneco was founded <strong>in</strong> its current form <strong>in</strong> 1995, when a number of older energy<br />

companies merged. 61 The company has a focus on <strong>the</strong> <strong>Dutch</strong> and Belgian markets, where it<br />

operates <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fields of production, trade, distribution, and supply of gas, electricity and heat.<br />

It is currently also develop<strong>in</strong>g new renewable capacity <strong>in</strong> France and <strong>the</strong> UK.<br />

Eneco Hold<strong>in</strong>g holds three subsidiaries: Eneco B.V., Joulz, and Sted<strong>in</strong>. Eneco B.V. deals<br />

with <strong>the</strong> generation of electricity, distribution of heat, trad<strong>in</strong>g activities and heat, gas and<br />

electricity supply <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ne<strong>the</strong>rlands and abroad. 62 Joulz is an energy <strong>in</strong>frastructure company<br />

that also constructs and ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>s public light<strong>in</strong>g systems, among o<strong>the</strong>r th<strong>in</strong>gs. Sted<strong>in</strong> is<br />

Eneco’s gas and electricity grid company.<br />

Along with Essent and Nuon, Eneco was traditionally one of <strong>the</strong> top three network operators<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ne<strong>the</strong>rlands and is <strong>the</strong> only one that is still owned by <strong>Dutch</strong> municipalities. The<br />

company has 5,500 employees, and <strong>in</strong> 2008 had a turnover of almost € 5 billion.<br />

4.2 Installed capacity and electricity generation <strong>in</strong> Europe<br />

Contrary to previous years, Eneco no longer provides <strong>in</strong>formation about its <strong>in</strong>stalled capacity<br />

or electricity it generates <strong>in</strong> its annual report or on its website. The figures given here come<br />

from direct correspondence between Eneco and SOMO. Figure 6 shows <strong>the</strong> relative fuel mix<br />

of Eneco’s <strong>in</strong>stalled capacity <strong>in</strong> 2008.<br />
