Council has failed to prevent <strong>the</strong><br />

destruction <strong>of</strong> high conservation<br />

value forests in Sweden<br />

Old, natural forests are being clear-cut and replaced by<br />

production forests that have low biodiversity values. In spite<br />

<strong>of</strong> this, <strong>the</strong> Swedish government is proposing to increase<br />

forest production and to decrease <strong>the</strong> budget allocated<br />

to forest protection. The government relies on forest<br />

companies and o<strong>the</strong>r forest owners to protect forest areas<br />

voluntarily.<br />

<strong>Forest</strong> certification plays a significant role in this voluntary<br />

approach to protection but certification requirements are<br />

frequently violated. The government is not, <strong>the</strong>refore, taking<br />

<strong>the</strong> responsibility it should to permanently protect vulnerable<br />

forest areas.<br />

Today, <strong>the</strong> last unprotected old-growth forests are<br />

being logged, many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m under <strong>the</strong> cover <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Forest</strong> Stewardship Council (FSC) certification.<br />

<strong>Greenpeace</strong> is an international non-governmental<br />

organization for <strong>the</strong> protection and conservation<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> environment. <strong>Greenpeace</strong> utilizes direct<br />

action, lobbying and research to achieve its goals.<br />

<strong>Greenpeace</strong> has a worldwide presence with national<br />

and regional <strong>of</strong>fices in over 40 countries.<br />
