You Don’t Have <strong>to</strong> be <strong>in</strong> a Troop<br />

<strong>to</strong> be a <strong>Girl</strong> Scout!<br />

Did you know...<br />

GSHPA <strong>of</strong>fers several ways for girls <strong>to</strong> experience <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong>?<br />

They’re called <strong>Girl</strong> Scout Pathways and <strong>the</strong>y allow girls <strong>to</strong><br />

participate however <strong>the</strong>y want!<br />

Camp: giv<strong>in</strong>g girls <strong>of</strong> all ages a chance <strong>to</strong><br />

explore nature, <strong>the</strong> environment and <strong>the</strong><br />

world!<br />

<strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Heart</strong> <strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania<br />

<strong>of</strong>fers high-quality programs <strong>in</strong> a safe,<br />

secure environment at our seven camp<br />

properties. Whe<strong>the</strong>r attend<strong>in</strong>g a day<br />

camp a sleep away camp or a weekend<br />

away, camp<strong>in</strong>g cont<strong>in</strong>ues <strong>to</strong> be an<br />

<strong>in</strong>tegral way <strong>to</strong> help girls develop <strong>the</strong>ir outdoor skills while<br />

build<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terpersonal leadership skills. Whe<strong>the</strong>r it’s hik<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

boat<strong>in</strong>g, arts-n-crafts, science, adventure - you name it, <strong>Girl</strong><br />

Scout camp has it!<br />

Events: stand-alone programs<br />

that comb<strong>in</strong>e educational<br />

moments with fun, hands-on<br />

activities.<br />

Great community partnerships allow us <strong>to</strong> <strong>of</strong>fer special<br />

events <strong>to</strong> help <strong>to</strong>day’s girls become <strong>to</strong>morrow’s leaders;<br />

th<strong>in</strong>gs like career days for older girls, leadership conferences for teens<br />

or even an educational, fun day with one <strong>of</strong> our local m<strong>in</strong>or league baseball teams.<br />

Series: a sequence <strong>of</strong> l<strong>in</strong>ked sessions br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g girls <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r<br />

around a common <strong>in</strong>terest for a specific amount <strong>of</strong> time.<br />

Outreach programs are a great opportunity for girls <strong>in</strong><br />

our under-served areas who may not have access <strong>to</strong> a<br />

traditional <strong>Girl</strong> Scout sett<strong>in</strong>g. Our after-school programs<br />

give girls a sense <strong>of</strong> community, friendship and belong<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The positive sett<strong>in</strong>g helps set a good foundation for <strong>the</strong>ir futures.<br />

Page 5

Travel: <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g leadership opportunities and<br />

cross-cultural understand<strong>in</strong>g through travel for<br />

girls throughout our council.<br />

What better way <strong>to</strong> travel than with <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong>!<br />

Local, domestic and <strong>in</strong>ternational trips are<br />

facilitated by volunteers, staff and <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

USA. Every year girls from our council travel <strong>to</strong> places like<br />

Rome, Florence, London and Paris! Many beg<strong>in</strong> this pathway<br />

with a trip south <strong>to</strong> see where it all started <strong>in</strong> Savannah,<br />

Georgia. Travel is much more than just a place <strong>to</strong> visit. It’s<br />

a learn<strong>in</strong>g experience help<strong>in</strong>g girls hone real-life skills like<br />

plann<strong>in</strong>g, budget<strong>in</strong>g, organization and leadership.<br />

Troops: groups <strong>of</strong> girls <strong>of</strong> a similar age, who meet<br />

regularly <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir community throughout <strong>the</strong> school year<br />

<strong>to</strong> discover more about <strong>the</strong>mselves, connect with each<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r and <strong>the</strong>ir communities, and take action <strong>to</strong> make<br />

<strong>the</strong> world a better place.<br />

We have thousands <strong>of</strong> troops meet<strong>in</strong>g throughout<br />

<strong>the</strong> 30 counties <strong>in</strong> our council! And it’s so much<br />

more than just a fun time <strong>to</strong> hang out with friends.<br />

With adult guidance and supervision, girls take <strong>the</strong><br />

lead, democratically plann<strong>in</strong>g and carry<strong>in</strong>g out<br />

<strong>the</strong> year’s program components and community<br />

service activities.<br />

Virtual: opportunities for girls <strong>to</strong> participate <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>teractive, high-quality activities <strong>in</strong> a<br />

safe, secure, onl<strong>in</strong>e environment!<br />

The <strong>in</strong>ternet is now a way <strong>of</strong> life for most people, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Girl</strong><br />

<strong>Scouts</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Heart</strong> <strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania. We have <strong>in</strong>formational<br />

and educational resources on our Web site, www.gshpa.org,<br />

as well as web-based activities such as onl<strong>in</strong>e network<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

badge programs and activities.<br />

Troop Information<br />

If your daughter is <strong>in</strong> a troop, you will need <strong>to</strong> know her leader’s name and phone<br />

number and <strong>the</strong> troop number. This <strong>in</strong>formation will help enable us <strong>to</strong> direct you <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

correct staff liaison should you need assistance. You should also know <strong>the</strong> meet<strong>in</strong>g<br />

date, time and location <strong>of</strong> troop meet<strong>in</strong>gs. It is your responsibility <strong>to</strong> br<strong>in</strong>g your<br />

daughter <strong>to</strong> and from meet<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

Uniforms & Handbooks<br />

Uniforms are not required <strong>to</strong> participate <strong>in</strong> <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong>, but we recommend girls<br />

have a sash or a vest <strong>to</strong> display <strong>the</strong>ir awards, badges and patches. There are grade<br />

level specific handbooks and resources detail<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>Girl</strong> Scout program, award<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation and activities <strong>to</strong> help girls discover, connect and take action <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir lives<br />

and communities. Be sure <strong>to</strong> check with your leader as <strong>to</strong> what items are needed.<br />

Service Units<br />

A Service Unit is a group <strong>of</strong> <strong>Girl</strong> Scout troops and volunteers with<strong>in</strong> a specific<br />

geographical area that functions as a team <strong>in</strong> order <strong>to</strong> provide <strong>Girl</strong> Scout activities <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> local community.<br />

Who Pays for What?<br />

Troop Funds<br />

Troop funds are earned by <strong>the</strong> troops and are <strong>the</strong> property <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> troop as a whole,<br />

not <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual members. The girls, with guidance from <strong>the</strong> leaders, will decide<br />

how <strong>the</strong>se funds will be used for <strong>the</strong>ir programs. Leaders are required <strong>to</strong> keep troop<br />

f<strong>in</strong>ancial records and <strong>to</strong> share this <strong>in</strong>formation with parents on a regular basis.<br />

Troop Fundrais<strong>in</strong>g<br />

All troops have two council-approved programs available <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>m for fundrais<strong>in</strong>g: <strong>the</strong><br />

Fall Product Program (candy, nuts and magaz<strong>in</strong>es) <strong>in</strong> September and Oc<strong>to</strong>ber, and <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Girl</strong> Scout Cookie Program which starts <strong>in</strong> January. Parent <strong>in</strong>volvement is necessary<br />

<strong>to</strong> make each a success. Permission from GSHPA is required before a troop may<br />

conduct any o<strong>the</strong>r money-earn<strong>in</strong>g activities.<br />

Troop Program & Troop Dues<br />

The troop will plan many different activities. Some may <strong>in</strong>volve field trips, camp<strong>in</strong>g<br />

trips, overnight trips or service unit/council events and activities that will require<br />

fund<strong>in</strong>g by <strong>the</strong> troop and/or parents. Permission forms are required. Many troops also<br />

have weekly or per-meet<strong>in</strong>g dues <strong>to</strong> help with <strong>the</strong>ir expenses. The troop dues are set<br />

by <strong>the</strong> troop and are payable even if <strong>the</strong> girl misses a meet<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>ancial Assistance<br />

Assistance is available for girls and adults who need f<strong>in</strong>ancial help <strong>in</strong> order <strong>to</strong><br />

participate <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Girl</strong> Scout program. F<strong>in</strong>ancial assistance is available for membership<br />

registration, dues, uniform components, handbooks, troop, service unit or councilsponsored<br />

events and programs and resident/day camp. Check with your leader,<br />

service unit, or GSHPA Service Center for more <strong>in</strong>formation.<br />

Membership Fee<br />

Each girl and adult help<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> troop pays a $12 annual membership fee. This<br />

fee goes directly <strong>to</strong> <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> USA for program development and activity<br />

<strong>in</strong>surance. No money stays with <strong>the</strong> local council. The membership fee is turned <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> troop leader along with <strong>the</strong> completed membership form.<br />

Troop Leaders are Always<br />

Who are <strong>Girl</strong> Scout Leaders?<br />

Leaders are VOLUNTEERS! Parents, grandparents,<br />

aunts, uncles, and o<strong>the</strong>r family members or adult<br />

friends who give unselfishly <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir time. Even with<br />

just a few girls, <strong>the</strong>re must be a m<strong>in</strong>imum <strong>of</strong> two<br />

registered <strong>Girl</strong> Scout adults at every troop meet<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

one <strong>of</strong> whom must be female.<br />

Volunteers are <strong>the</strong> lifeblood <strong>of</strong> <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scout<strong>in</strong>g</strong>. They<br />

make a difference <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> lives <strong>of</strong> girls, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> success<br />

<strong>of</strong> families and <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> growth <strong>of</strong> communities. The<br />

strength <strong>of</strong> <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scout<strong>in</strong>g</strong> rests on <strong>the</strong> shoulders<br />

<strong>of</strong> adult volunteers who are committed <strong>to</strong> help<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>to</strong>day’s girls become <strong>to</strong>morrow’s leaders.<br />

<strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Heart</strong> <strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania has tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g,<br />
