Dear Friends,
As we write this, the 100th Anniversary year of the Girl Scouts is upon us and we are
celebrating the inspiring generations of Girl Scouts who have come before us.
One hundred years ago, our founder Juliette Gordon Low, began a movement to bring
girls out of social and economic isolation. Juliette’s new organization, the Girl Scouts,
enabled girls to explore the world around them and discover their own self-confident
voices. Girl Scouts took girls into the natural environment, challenging them to stretch
their physical limits. Girl Scouts exposed girls to travel, careers, and educational possibilities,
challenging them to stretch across mental, social and racial barriers.
Since the 1920s, Girl Scouting has been strong in the region we now call the “Heart of
Pennsylvania,” producing generations of women who credit their Girl Scout leadership
experiences of yesterday with their accomplishments of today.
As we join together to celebrate the generations who have built the Girl Scouts, we call
upon you to make a commitment to the future. Understanding that today’s girls are
tomorrow’s leaders, let each of us commit to inspire new generations of girls by building
a strong Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania.
The events of our 2011 fiscal year, highlighted in this annual report, demonstrate that
GSHPA keeps getting stronger in several important areas. Our latest audit report
continues to show financial improvement through rigorous attention to spending as
well as enhanced fundraising efforts. We’ve worked as one council to involve thousands
of girls in the Forever Green initiative and we have commenced a multi-year
plan of investment at all seven of our camp properties. Service Units throughout the
council’s footprint have planned wonderful 100th Anniversary events which we hope
you will enjoy.
We thank all of the people who have come together and contributed in some way to
assure the success of Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania: Volunteers, Donors,
Staff, Parents, Program Partners, and Girls.
We dedicate this annual report to the next generation of Girl Scouts. Together we can
inspire them to reach their full potential.

Kicking Off Forever Green, Girl Scout Style
What better way to get Girl Scouts excited about saving the environment than
with a HUGE party and live rock band? That’s exactly how Girl Scouts in the
Heart of Pennsylvania (GSHPA) kicked off its “Forever Green” initiative in 2011.
More than 1,400 Girl Scouts and adult volunteers from across our 30-county
footprint packed Cumberland Valley High School in Mechanicsburg, PA for the
event.
The festivities began with opening remarks by Mother Earth explaining GSHPA’s
commitment to reduce the council’s collective carbon footprint during the
year by 10 percent. Girls then attended environmentally themed activities and
workshops throughout the day to learn how to become more aware of their
earthly-impact and ways to reduce it; everything from recycling and composting,
to solar power and how to grow their own food!
The day wrapped up with a rocking concert by Kicking Daisies, winners
of Radio Disney’s Next Big Thing award, to help the girls get motivated
about going green. (A little dancing on stage didn’t hurt either.)
Girl Scouts Go Pink
with the Penn State Lady Lions
Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania teamed up with the Lady Lions,
Penn State University women’s basketball team, in the fight against breast
cancer in 2011. More than 500 Girl Scouts and adult volunteers from
across the GSHPA 30-county service area attended the Penn State
Pink Zone 2011 basketball game on February 27, 2011. The Pink Zone
game is part of a PSU initiative to raise funds for breast cancer awareness,
research and education.
Cadettes from throughout our council led the way as cancer survivors from all
across the state were honored during a ceremony at halftime. The girls held up
signs to tribute groups of cancer survivors by displaying how many years they
had been cancer free as they formed a sea of pink on the basketball court.
The girls enjoyed a day packed full of enriching experiences and were thrilled
with the opportunity to attend the game at the University Park campus and
help raise awareness about such an important cause. As part of the day’s
festivities, the Girl Scouts participated in the game’s opening flag ceremony,
toured the Penn State campus, met the members of the Lady Lions squad
after the game and attended a special presentation by the Penn State
Campus Girl Scouts on the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Samoas & Thin Mints & Bears, Oh My!
Our girls are always getting creative when it comes to ideas about where they
can sell those delicious Girl Scout Cookies. This year the girls asked about selling
cookies at a Hershey Bears hockey game, and it turned out to be a big hit at the
Giant Center in Hershey, PA.
Fans lined up to buy Girl Scout Cookies as they filed into the arena to watch the
Hershey Bears take on their opponents! Several troops had a chance to set up for
various time intervals during the course of the game, and the cookies were flying off
the shelves. Even some of the players from the Hershey Bears bought a few boxes to
recharge with after a long night on the ice. Girls were so successful during the sale at
the Hershey Bears cookie booths, they arranged to do it again in 2012!
GSHPA Goes Mainstream
with Social Media
Have you “liked” us yet? Girl Scouts in the Heart of
Pennsylvania built up our social network in 2011 by launching
a Facebook page. We have nearly 2,000 likes from 18 countries! How’s that for
global scouting? This just proves Girl Scouts is making a difference in girls’ lives
around the world!
Our page is a great way for GSHPA to engage volunteers and inform them of upcoming
events and happenings throughout the council. Those who like our page
are also using it as a forum to get the word out about what they
are doing across the country and around the world! If you haven’t
checked us out yet, log onto www.facebook.com/GSHPA.
Scholarships: GSHPA awarded two $1,000 scholarships, four $750
scholarships and six $500 scholarships to 12 girls in the council who will be
attending an institution of higher education.
Cookie Program: In 2011, 20,403 girls participated in the Girl Scout Cookie
Program selling 2,106,292 packages of cookies. That’s an average of more than
103 packages of cookies per girl!

Every Day is a New Adventure at
GSHPA Summer Camp
Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania created a new and exciting format for
girls who attended summer sleep away camp in 2011, with the choice between
traditional and ranch camping. With traditional, girls got the opportunity to get
back to nature and celebrate camping the way it was meant to be. At ranch camp,
girls spent a week on the range, learning how to care for horses while advancing
their riding skills.
Both camping experiences also allowed girls to customize their stay because
they chose their daily activities. Everything from archery to swimming to planning
off-site excursions! Every day was a truly new adventure for them! Girl-led
formats like our summer camp program help foster the courage, confidence
and character today’s girls need to become tomorrow’s leaders. The sessions
were such a success, GSHPA will offer a similar outdoor experience in 2012.
New Training Opportunities Offered
for All Volunteers
Volunteers play a key role in providing the Girl Scout Leadership Experience
throughout our council. At the start of the 2010-2011 Girl Scout year, GSHPA
kicked off our Volunteer Training Weekends.
Feedback from our members helped us create an opportunity for both new
and more seasoned volunteers to come together for a full weekend of training,
information sharing and networking. Participants had the option to choose
to attend a full weekend or only the workshops that appealed most to them.
Trainings were offered at five camp locations throughout our council to make
it easier for more volunteers to get the trainings they needed to provide the
best possible outdoor experiences for girls without having to travel too far.
Gearing Up to Celebrate
100 Years of Girl Scouting
With the 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouts fast approaching, GSHPA began planning
some special events and initiatives to involve girls and volunteers in the celebration
of this amazing Girl Scout milestone. The first step we took to get our members
involved was to offer the 100th Anniversary Service Unit Mini-Grant opportunity to all
Service Units throughout our council. Service Units who were interested in putting on
a special celebration or hosting an event were encouraged to apply for grants. The
grants were awarded to Service Units whose events were designed to empower girls
to impact their community and to help increase the visibility of Girl Scouts. More than
70 Service Units received grant money to help cover the costs involved in offering
100th Anniversary themed events and activities for girls.
The great work of our very own 100th Anniversary Committee began in 2010-2011.
With no time to lose, the committee began coordinating several council-led events
and initiatives to help generate excitement about the centennial celebration. Some
initiatives and events included:
• Organizing transportation to the Girl Scouts Rock the Mall 100th Anniversary Sing
Along in Washington D.C.
• Creating the 100 Grand Girl Scouts Campaign with an aggressive goal of
reaching 100,000 Girl Scout Alumnae who live in our 30-county service area
• Planning of our 100th Anniversary Camporee, which will be held at the York
Expo Center from August 10-12 and scores of regional and local 100th
Anniversary celebrations set throughout the year
• Setting dates for fund raising events to be held throughout our council to celebrate
the 100th Anniversary

Volunteer Training Weekends were offered at no charge and included overnight
accommodations and meals. The training weekends were a huge success
and very well received by our volunteers. The flexibility with the training
weekends along with the convenience provided by the multiple locations
worked out so well, that we continued to offer the training weekends in the
spring and have already scheduled more for 2012!
