Dear Friends,<br />

As we write this, <strong>the</strong> 100th Anniversary year <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong> is upon us and we are<br />

celebrat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>spir<strong>in</strong>g generations <strong>of</strong> <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong> who have come before us.<br />

One hundred years ago, our founder Juliette Gordon Low, began a movement to br<strong>in</strong>g<br />

girls out <strong>of</strong> social and economic isolation. Juliette’s new organization, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong>,<br />

enabled girls to explore <strong>the</strong> world around <strong>the</strong>m and discover <strong>the</strong>ir own self-confident<br />

voices. <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong> took girls <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> natural environment, challeng<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m to stretch<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir physical limits. <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong> exposed girls to travel, careers, and educational possibilities,<br />

challeng<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m to stretch across mental, social and racial barriers.<br />

S<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> 1920s, <strong>Girl</strong> Scout<strong>in</strong>g has been strong <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region we now call <strong>the</strong> “<strong>Heart</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Pennsylvania</strong>,” produc<strong>in</strong>g generations <strong>of</strong> women who credit <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>Girl</strong> Scout leadership<br />

experiences <strong>of</strong> yesterday with <strong>the</strong>ir accomplishments <strong>of</strong> today.<br />

As we jo<strong>in</strong> toge<strong>the</strong>r to celebrate <strong>the</strong> generations who have built <strong>the</strong> <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong>, we call<br />

upon you to make a commitment to <strong>the</strong> future. Understand<strong>in</strong>g that today’s girls are<br />

tomorrow’s leaders, let each <strong>of</strong> us commit to <strong>in</strong>spire new generations <strong>of</strong> girls by build<strong>in</strong>g<br />

a strong <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Heart</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Pennsylvania</strong>.<br />

The events <strong>of</strong> our <strong>2011</strong> fiscal year, highlighted <strong>in</strong> this annual report, demonstrate that<br />

GSHPA keeps gett<strong>in</strong>g stronger <strong>in</strong> several important areas. Our latest audit report<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ues to show f<strong>in</strong>ancial improvement through rigorous attention to spend<strong>in</strong>g as<br />

well as enhanced fundrais<strong>in</strong>g efforts. We’ve worked as one council to <strong>in</strong>volve thousands<br />

<strong>of</strong> girls <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Forever Green <strong>in</strong>itiative and we have commenced a multi-year<br />

plan <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>vestment at all seven <strong>of</strong> our camp properties. Service Units throughout <strong>the</strong><br />

council’s footpr<strong>in</strong>t have planned wonderful 100th Anniversary events which we hope<br />

you will enjoy.<br />

We thank all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> people who have come toge<strong>the</strong>r and contributed <strong>in</strong> some way to<br />

assure <strong>the</strong> success <strong>of</strong> <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Heart</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Pennsylvania</strong>: Volunteers, Donors,<br />

Kick<strong>in</strong>g Off Forever Green, <strong>Girl</strong> Scout Style<br />

What better way to get <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong> excited about sav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> environment than<br />

with a HUGE party and live rock band? That’s exactly how <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Heart</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Pennsylvania</strong> (GSHPA) kicked <strong>of</strong>f its “Forever Green” <strong>in</strong>itiative <strong>in</strong> <strong>2011</strong>.<br />

More than 1,400 <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong> and adult volunteers from across our 30-county<br />

footpr<strong>in</strong>t packed Cumberland Valley High School <strong>in</strong> Mechanicsburg, PA for <strong>the</strong><br />

event.<br />

The festivities began with open<strong>in</strong>g remarks by Mo<strong>the</strong>r Earth expla<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g GSHPA’s<br />

commitment to reduce <strong>the</strong> council’s collective carbon footpr<strong>in</strong>t dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

year by 10 percent. <strong>Girl</strong>s <strong>the</strong>n attended environmentally <strong>the</strong>med activities and<br />

workshops throughout <strong>the</strong> day to learn how to become more aware <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

earthly-impact and ways to reduce it; everyth<strong>in</strong>g from recycl<strong>in</strong>g and compost<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

to solar power and how to grow <strong>the</strong>ir own food!<br />

The day wrapped up with a rock<strong>in</strong>g concert by Kick<strong>in</strong>g Daisies, w<strong>in</strong>ners<br />

<strong>of</strong> Radio Disney’s Next Big Th<strong>in</strong>g award, to help <strong>the</strong> girls get motivated<br />

about go<strong>in</strong>g green. (A little danc<strong>in</strong>g on stage didn’t hurt ei<strong>the</strong>r.)<br />

<strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong> Go P<strong>in</strong>k<br />

with <strong>the</strong> Penn State Lady Lions<br />

<strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Heart</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Pennsylvania</strong> teamed up with <strong>the</strong> Lady Lions,<br />

Penn State University women’s basketball team, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fight aga<strong>in</strong>st breast<br />

cancer <strong>in</strong> <strong>2011</strong>. More than 500 <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong> and adult volunteers from<br />

across <strong>the</strong> GSHPA 30-county service area attended <strong>the</strong> Penn State<br />

P<strong>in</strong>k Zone <strong>2011</strong> basketball game on February 27, <strong>2011</strong>. The P<strong>in</strong>k Zone<br />

game is part <strong>of</strong> a PSU <strong>in</strong>itiative to raise funds for breast cancer awareness,<br />

research and education.<br />

Cadettes from throughout our council led <strong>the</strong> way as cancer survivors from all<br />

across <strong>the</strong> state were honored dur<strong>in</strong>g a ceremony at halftime. The girls held up<br />

signs to tribute groups <strong>of</strong> cancer survivors by display<strong>in</strong>g how many years <strong>the</strong>y<br />

had been cancer free as <strong>the</strong>y formed a sea <strong>of</strong> p<strong>in</strong>k on <strong>the</strong> basketball court.<br />

The girls enjoyed a day packed full <strong>of</strong> enrich<strong>in</strong>g experiences and were thrilled<br />

with <strong>the</strong> opportunity to attend <strong>the</strong> game at <strong>the</strong> University Park campus and<br />

help raise awareness about such an important cause. As part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> day’s<br />

festivities, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong> participated <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> game’s open<strong>in</strong>g flag ceremony,<br />

toured <strong>the</strong> Penn State campus, met <strong>the</strong> members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lady Lions squad<br />

after <strong>the</strong> game and attended a special presentation by <strong>the</strong> Penn State<br />

Campus <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong> on <strong>the</strong> importance <strong>of</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g a healthy lifestyle.<br />

FOREVER<br />

GREEN<br />

Samoas & Th<strong>in</strong> M<strong>in</strong>ts & Bears, Oh My!<br />

Our girls are always gett<strong>in</strong>g creative when it comes to ideas about where <strong>the</strong>y<br />

can sell those delicious <strong>Girl</strong> Scout Cookies. This year <strong>the</strong> girls asked about sell<strong>in</strong>g<br />

cookies at a Hershey Bears hockey game, and it turned out to be a big hit at <strong>the</strong><br />

Giant Center <strong>in</strong> Hershey, PA.<br />

Fans l<strong>in</strong>ed up to buy <strong>Girl</strong> Scout Cookies as <strong>the</strong>y filed <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> arena to watch <strong>the</strong><br />

Hershey Bears take on <strong>the</strong>ir opponents! Several troops had a chance to set up for<br />

various time <strong>in</strong>tervals dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> game, and <strong>the</strong> cookies were fly<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong>f<br />

<strong>the</strong> shelves. Even some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> players from <strong>the</strong> Hershey Bears bought a few boxes to<br />

recharge with after a long night on <strong>the</strong> ice. <strong>Girl</strong>s were so successful dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> sale at<br />

<strong>the</strong> Hershey Bears cookie booths, <strong>the</strong>y arranged to do it aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> 2012!<br />

Every Day is a New Adventure at<br />

GSHPA Summer Camp<br />

<strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Heart</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Pennsylvania</strong> created a new and excit<strong>in</strong>g format for<br />

girls who attended summer sleep away camp <strong>in</strong> <strong>2011</strong>, with <strong>the</strong> choice between<br />

traditional and ranch camp<strong>in</strong>g. With traditional, girls got <strong>the</strong> opportunity to get<br />

back to nature and celebrate camp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> way it was meant to be. At ranch camp,<br />

girls spent a week on <strong>the</strong> range, learn<strong>in</strong>g how to care for horses while advanc<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir rid<strong>in</strong>g skills.<br />

Both camp<strong>in</strong>g experiences also allowed girls to customize <strong>the</strong>ir stay because<br />

<strong>the</strong>y chose <strong>the</strong>ir daily activities. Everyth<strong>in</strong>g from archery to swimm<strong>in</strong>g to plann<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>of</strong>f-site excursions! Every day was a truly new adventure for <strong>the</strong>m! <strong>Girl</strong>-led<br />

formats like our summer camp program help foster <strong>the</strong> courage, confidence<br />

and character today’s girls need to become tomorrow’s leaders. The sessions<br />

were such a success, GSHPA will <strong>of</strong>fer a similar outdoor experience <strong>in</strong> 2012.<br />

New Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Opportunities Offered<br />

for All Volunteers<br />

Volunteers play a key role <strong>in</strong> provid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>Girl</strong> Scout Leadership Experience<br />

throughout our council. At <strong>the</strong> start <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 2010-<strong>2011</strong> <strong>Girl</strong> Scout year, GSHPA<br />

kicked <strong>of</strong>f our Volunteer Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Weekends.<br />

Feedback from our members helped us create an opportunity for both new<br />

and more seasoned volunteers to come toge<strong>the</strong>r for a full weekend <strong>of</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g,<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation shar<strong>in</strong>g and network<strong>in</strong>g. Participants had <strong>the</strong> option to choose<br />

to attend a full weekend or only <strong>the</strong> workshops that appealed most to <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>gs were <strong>of</strong>fered at five camp locations throughout our council to make<br />

it easier for more volunteers to get <strong>the</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>gs <strong>the</strong>y needed to provide <strong>the</strong><br />

best possible outdoor experiences for girls without hav<strong>in</strong>g to travel too far.<br />

Gear<strong>in</strong>g Up to Celebrate<br />

100 Years <strong>of</strong> <strong>Girl</strong> Scout<strong>in</strong>g<br />

With <strong>the</strong> 100th Anniversary <strong>of</strong> <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong> fast approach<strong>in</strong>g, GSHPA began plann<strong>in</strong>g<br />

some special events and <strong>in</strong>itiatives to <strong>in</strong>volve girls and volunteers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> celebration<br />

<strong>of</strong> this amaz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Girl</strong> Scout milestone. The first step we took to get our members<br />

<strong>in</strong>volved was to <strong>of</strong>fer <strong>the</strong> 100th Anniversary Service Unit M<strong>in</strong>i-Grant opportunity to all<br />

Service Units throughout our council. Service Units who were <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> putt<strong>in</strong>g on<br />

a special celebration or host<strong>in</strong>g an event were encouraged to apply for grants. The<br />

grants were awarded to Service Units whose events were designed to empower girls<br />

to impact <strong>the</strong>ir community and to help <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>the</strong> visibility <strong>of</strong> <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong>. More than<br />

70 Service Units received grant money to help cover <strong>the</strong> costs <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

100th Anniversary <strong>the</strong>med events and activities for girls.<br />

The great work <strong>of</strong> our very own 100th Anniversary Committee began <strong>in</strong> 2010-<strong>2011</strong>.<br />

With no time to lose, <strong>the</strong> committee began coord<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g several council-led events<br />

and <strong>in</strong>itiatives to help generate excitement about <strong>the</strong> centennial celebration. Some<br />

<strong>in</strong>itiatives and events <strong>in</strong>cluded:<br />

• Organiz<strong>in</strong>g transportation to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong> Rock <strong>the</strong> Mall 100th Anniversary S<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Along <strong>in</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton D.C.<br />

• Creat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> 100 Grand <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong> Campaign with an aggressive goal <strong>of</strong><br />
