Clamping systems for glass balustrades
www.sb-railing.nl
SB-Railing + AMG
SB-Railing, a business unit of s+bi, started a cooperation
with AMG Balustradesystemen to market its balustrade systems jointly.
AMG Balustradesystemen, a part of the Almex group based in Badhoevedorp, develops
and delivers glass balustrade systems for the residential and non-residential
building and renovation sectors. Glass balustrades held in place in aluminium clamping
systems are being used ever more often in current architecture; they were missing
in the SB-Railing range up to now. AMG, in turn, was looking for a partner with
good storage and logistics options for the delivery of the clamping systems for both
the Dutch and international market. In addition, the delivery programmes of both joint
venture partners fit in well with each other. One of the advantages of the joint venture
is that the full range can be delivered within 48 hours.
The distribution between AMG and SB-Railing is clear. AMG is in charge of projects
and SB-Railing is in charge of profile trade.
KOMO-assessment for the Un 0.8 and Un 3 balustrade systems
The “U” in these names stands for ‘Utiliteit’ (Dutch for non-residential) and 0.8 and 3 stand for the line load of 0.8 KN/m
and 3 KN/m, respectively. A distinction is made between ‘standard buildings’ where a line load of 0.8 KN/m is sufficient and
‘buildings where many people may be present simultaneously’ where the 3 KN/m line load must be used. An example for
the last situation is a grandstand in a sports building, the dining room of a restaurant, a community centre, a day nursery, a
nightclub, a course room, a cinema, etc. AMG has been granted the KOMO certificate for both systems and is unique in the
Netherlands because of this.
Anticipating on the future
The certified balustrades meet the NEN 2608-2 standard. In addition, we are also anticipating on the future by taking the
coming changes into account. The fact is that the Dutch Buildings Decree will be changing as will the standards. Eurocodes
(European structural design codes) will take their place. Our certified systems already meet the new requirements.
Quality statement replaces calculations and tests
In the Netherlands municipalities and customers may no longer demand calculations and tests from suppliers when they can
submit a valid quality statement.
Art. 1.7 of the Dutch Buildings Decree states: “If in relation to or by virtue of this Decree a requirement is set with regard to a
construction product or process and a quality statement has been issued tailored on this requirement based on a system of
quality statements for construction recognised by our Minister, the relevant requirement shall have been met if this product
or process is used in accordance with the quality statement”.
Structural strength calculation
The SB-Railing glass balustrades naturally meet legal regulations (Buildings Decree). They are
subjected to a line, point, impact and, if applicable, wind load. The line, point and wind load is
based on calculations and the impact load is based on an overspeed test.
Visit our website www.SB-Railing.nl for more information about the calculations.
You can find the KOMO assessment certificate on our website: www.SB-Railing.nl
AMG balustrade systems tested for French market
SB-Alustrade has been testing six of their profiles at CSTB in Paris.
The CSTB in France is similar to TNO in Delft.
The difference between the tests in Holland and in France is that in Holland the accent is
on the calculations and less on the practice (pendu¬lum test). In France it’s the other way
around.
In France there is a pendulum test (leather bag with glass balls that have a total weight of 50
kg), which is thrown against the balustrade from a certain height (similar to the test in Holland).
However, the same test is repeated from a height of approx. 4 mtr and further removed
from the balustrade. The impact is enormous. To test the line loads of the profile a test with
a force of even 600 KG. is put on top of the glass. They test pulling and pushing 600 KG. All
systems are approved in three different criteria.
Glass balustrades for architect
Railings and balustrades are usually not an objective in itself but a mandatory fall-through protection. Architects, therefore, often
try to make a balustrade into an attractive feature but they continue to be mandatory ‘obstacles’. By having glass balustrades,
they no longer distract and, therefore, other accents are given more attention. Our glass balustrades ensure that architects
are given more design options. Architects also save on design and drawing costs and, therefore, time. Additional advantages
of glass balustrades are their spatial effect and a more transparent building. A glass balustrade, moreover, requires very little
maintenance and is durable. Glass gives architects infinite options in relation to models, colours, motifs and/or lighting.
SB-Railing balustrade systems
are suitable for different target
groups
We have different types of glass balustrades for residential
and non-residential construction projects. Profiles
can be easily fitted by third parties because of
the modular construction of the system. You can order
every component of the glass balustrade separately
from us.
Economic glass balustrades for housing associations
SB-Railing glass balustrades are very interesting for housing associations
and a responsible investment because of the price/quality ratio. The glass
balustrades are not just aesthetic delite but also very durable and low in
maintenance. Corrosion is basically not an issue and dirt does not attach
to glass. Stubborn dirt is not only ugly but also often the start of corrosion.
Glass balustrades are in part cleaned by nature (rain). It is possible that glass
balustrades may be slightly more expensive when compared to conventional
steel railings but the additional expense is more than compensated by their
long service life and the little maintenance that they require. SB-Railing glass
balustrades are, therefore, not only pleasing to the eye but also economically
justified.
Glass balustrades for the renovation market
The renovation market is a growing market. Flats were built en mass in the
1950s to tackle the housing shortage. Often, they have become sad buildings
without any frills that have now become obsolete technically and economically.
Sometimes the flats are demolished but more often, they are renovated.
SB-Railing glass balustrades are a good option when renovating these flats.
The existing balconies and galleries are often narrow; the glass balustrades
are fitted next to the floor and, therefore, do not take up any effective space.
Their durability and low maintenance requirements are important advantages.
Glass balustrades for the metal sector
Many construction and other metal-processing companies can produce conventional
metal railings. For a glass balustrade, an unwieldy steel substructure with a
weight of approximately 60 kg p/m had to be constructed in the past. Next, it had
to be panelled by the contractor.
This is no longer necessary because of the SB-Railing clamping systems. The
unique aluminium clamping profiles and the accessories not only guarantee a
cheaper but particularly a more pleasing glass balustrade. The installation is,
moreover, many times lighter and easier to fit. Metal companies can broaden their
market with the clamping profiles produced by SB-Railing. They can now supply
and fit high-quality glass balustrades at a competitive price.
Glass balustrades for contractors and construction
companies
Are you looking for qualitative and competitively priced glass balustrades? Our
glass balustrades are attractive to contractors/construction companies because of
the favourable price/quality ratio. Construction companies must, on the one hand,
deliver quality but, on the other hand, they must competitively calculate a project to
ensure they get the contract. SB-Railing helps construction companies by offering
certified glass balustrades for an attractive price. We offer a unique standard solution
for basically every floor.
Glass balustrades for the glass sector
Conventional railings sometimes have glass panels but always in combination
with metal components. The SB-Railing clamping systems give a new boost to the
glass sector. The unique aluminium clamping profiles and simple fitting no longer
require specialist professional knowledge and tools. Glass companies can broaden
their market with our clamping profiles. They can now not only supply and fit the
glass but the full glass balustrade.

Un 0.8 glass balustrade
Un 0.8 glass balustrades are intended for other situations that
do not involve a residential or meeting function. The “U” stands
for ‘Utiliteit’ (Dutch for non-residential) and 0.8 KN/m for the
line load that applies against the top side of the balustrade. The
“n” stands for next to the floor. Definition of “other rooms”: all
rooms that do not have a residential, cell or meeting function.
SB-Railing side wall profi les
We have different types of glass balustrades that we will further describe in the
pages that follow. We, for example, have profiles that can be fitted against the
floor and profiles that will be on top of the floor. We also have a profile in our
range that can be used as a partition between two rooms. Profiles can be easily
fitted by third parties because of the modular construction of the system. You can
order every component of the glass balustrade separately from us.
We supply different glass balustrades that are fitted against the floor such as the
W for residential applications and the Un 0.8 and Un 3 for non-residential applications.
The systems have not been developed whilst sitting behind a desk but
in practice. AMG has many years of experience in the fitting of railing systems.
This means that the customer can be assured that the systems are easy to fit and
multifunctional. This is a double whammy since it will give a pleasant end result
that can be fitted quickly with a minimum of effort.
Structural strength calculation
The SB-Railing glass balustrades naturally meet legal regulations (Buildings
Decree). They are subjected to a line, point, impact and, if applicable, wind
load. The line, point and wind load is based on calculations and the impact load
is based on an impact test.
Visit our website, for more information about the calculations.
Un 3 glass balustrade
Un 3 glass balustrades are meant for situations where many
people can gather simultaneously. The “U” stands for ‘Utiliteit’
(Dutch for non-residential) and the 3 for the line load that
applies against the top side of the balustrade. The “n” stands
for next to the floor. Definition of a ‘meeting function’: a use
function for people coming together for art, culture, religion,
communication, child care, issuing beverages for consumption
on site and watching sports.
AMG 2 glass balustrade
A new development in the AMG series is the AMG2.
A profile that is also intended for fitting against the
floor. The AMG2 profile has a 0.8 KN/m line load. The
difference with the Un 0.8 profile is that this profile is
smaller. Sometimes a 23 cm high profile such as the
Un 0.8 cannot be used. This profile can then be used.
Finishing options Un profi les
Half cover
This half cover is meant to cover the bottom part of the base
profile and, therefore, the bolts. This cover can also be used
for adding strength when a larger and longer cover needs to be
made to cover the whole of the floor. For example, for a profile
fitted with stainless steel.
Full cover
This whole cover encapsulates the whole of the profile. This
cover can be supplied in an aluminium anodised and a stainless
steel look.
Stainless steel look
The cap that fully covers the profile can be supplied
in a “stainless steel look”. It truly looks like stainless
steel because of the brushing and colour adjustment.
This in combination with a stainless steel handrail on
the glass gives overall a beautiful effect.
Finishing options
One of the most significant advantages of our profiles is the great variety in finishing options. The
profiles have a standard height but the elevation of floors in construction can vary. An architect may
decide to cover the whole of the floor and to integrate the profile using a cover or panelling. This is all
possible with our profiles as you can see in the images on this page. We also have two types of covers
that ensure bolts remain out of sight. A profile that only covers the bolts and a profile that encapsulates
the full profile.
Uo 0.8 glass balustrade
Uo 0.8 glass balustrades are intended for other situations that
do not involve a residential or meeting function. “U” stands for
‘Utiliteit’ (Dutch for non-residential) and 0.8 KN/m for the line
load that applies against the top side of the balustrade. The “o”
stands for on the floor. Definition of “other rooms”: all rooms
that do not have a residential, cell or meeting function.
SB-Railing fl oor profi les
In addition to the wide choice in profiles that must be secured against
the floor, we have also developed a number of profiles that can be fitted
on the floor. There is not always sufficient room to fit the glass balustrade
against the floor. SB-Railing’s Uo 0.8 and Uo 3 floor profiles offer
a solution for these cases. They can be fitted on the edge of the floor
because of the form of the profiles. The “U” stands for ‘Utiliteit’ (Dutch for
non-residential) and the “o” for on the floor. The 0.8/3 stand for the 0.8
KN/m and 3 KN/m line loads. Extensive attention has also been paid to
safety and ease of fitting with regard to these profiles. The floor profiles,
naturally, also meet the strictest requirements that must rightly be met by
a glass balustrade.
Structural strength calculation
The SB-Railing glass balustrades naturally meet legal regulations (Buildings
Decree). They are subjected to a line, point, impact and, if applicable,
wind load. The line, point and wind load is based on calculations
and the impact load is based on an overspeed test.
Visit our website www.SB-Railing.nl for more information about the
calculations.
Uo 3 glass balustrade
Uo 3 glass balustrades are intended for meeting functions. The
“U” stands for ‘Utiliteit’ (Dutch for non-residential) and 3 for
the line load that applies against the top side of the balustrade.
The “o” stands for on the floor. Definition of a “Meeting function”:
A use function for people coming together for art, culture,
religion, communication, child care, issuing beverages for
consumption on site and watching sports.
SB-Railing partitioning profi le
SB-Railing also includes a partitioning profile in its
range in addition to the balustrade profiles. It is ideal to
separate two ground-floor rooms in a transparent manner.
The profile has been tested by TÜV.
