Prentiss<br />
Thomas Brigham Prentiss (1809-1895) came from Chelsea,<br />
Vermont, in 1831, first to Hull and <strong>the</strong>n to Chelsea,<br />
Quebec, in 1834. At Old Chelsea he ran a store and post<br />
office. Both operations were moved to a large new<br />
bl.\ilding which he had built in <strong>the</strong> newer Chelsea where<br />
he continued to serve <strong>the</strong> community until 1854 when he<br />
moved to Aylmer. Prentiss was followed by Nicholas<br />
Link as Postmaster until 1863 when Harry B. Prentiss<br />
(probably a son of Thomas B. Prentiss) carried on both<br />
store and post office until 1908.<br />
Thomas Brigham Prentiss was named after his uncle,<br />
Thomas Brigham who owned <strong>the</strong> two mills in Old<br />
Chelsea. At Aylmer T.B. Prentiss was an active member<br />
of <strong>the</strong> Masons, being <strong>the</strong> Lodge's chaplain. He was mayor<br />
in 1878/9. He married twice, firstly to Saloma Brigham<br />
(1814-1837) daughter of Abraham Brigham Jr. and Patty<br />
Hayward, and secondly to Hannah Folsum Weymouth<br />
(1814-1907) of Tunbridge, Vermont.<br />
A framed testimonial to Thomas Brigham Prentiss by his<br />
Masonic colleagues and <strong>the</strong> Prentiss piano are now in <strong>the</strong><br />
Museum of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Historical</strong>,<br />
<strong>Society</strong> of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Gatineau</strong>, in<br />
Wakefield. (SEE APPENDIX "E".)<br />
Reid<br />
Thomas Reid (1805-1874) came from Tipperary, Ireland.<br />
He married Lucy (May) Wright (1795-1883) daughter of<br />
Thomas Wright, older bro<strong>the</strong>r of Philemon.<br />
