Blackburn<br />

Andrew and David Blackburn came to Wright's Town<br />

from Glasgow, Scotland, on <strong>the</strong> brig Amity, in 1829. They<br />

moved to this area and settled on both sides of <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Gatineau</strong> River, north of Chelsea. Andrew acquired<br />

property on <strong>the</strong> river's west side, and turned to<br />

lumbering, while David chose to settle on <strong>the</strong> east side.<br />

Blackburn Road and Blackburn Creek perpetuate <strong>the</strong><br />

family name.<br />

Blake<br />

Jeremiah Blake came from Londonderry, Ireland. He<br />

married Ann Flynn. He died February 8, 1902 in his 90th<br />

year. Ann died February 10, 1904 aged 82 years. Both are<br />

buried in St. Stephen's Cemetery. Their daughter<br />

Ca<strong>the</strong>rine Ita (1851-1929) married Michael McCloskey<br />

(1861-1949), also both buried at St. Stephen's.<br />

Brigham<br />

The pioneer was Thomas, son of Abe Brigham, a tax<br />

collector (1787-1842). He came from Chelsea, Vermont<br />

and probably transplanted <strong>the</strong> name to this community.<br />

He worked for <strong>the</strong> Wrights and in 1816 he married <strong>the</strong><br />

daughter of Philemon Wright, Abigail (1796-1877). He<br />

inherited Columbia Farm, now a restaurant in Hull.<br />

Thomas also owned property at Old Chelsea and had<br />

Josiah Chamberlin builc;l both a grist and a saw mill on<br />
